Andrew Fifita tells junior rugby league referee: ‘I’ll smash you’

Look I don't condone what they did , but I can understand why they were so angry after reading the ninemsn story

If it had been my child with what has happened with a couple of on field deaths recently , I'd be spewing

Sounds like time wasting to me.

They were so concerned about their player they focussed on abusing the ref instead.

The ref controls the game, braidead trainers or their dopey meathead bothers dont

Yeah true

I guess only the spectators will know the truth

But you see it happen virtually every weekend at junior games where the ref misses an injured player ,especially Under 10's and below where there are no touchies and everyone is screaming at refs to stop the game

Again I'm not excusing there post match crap

Andrew Fifita has created a very dangerous precedent by clearing the security rope and running on to the field to abuse and threathen the referee. This could have escalated into crowd violence around the field with the likelihood of serous injury to spectators including young children. I'm glad you are not excusing Andrew Fifita's dangerous antic.

The Cronulla Sharks have stood down Andrew and David Fifita for allegedly abusing a referee at an A-grade game over the weekend.

The brothers were earlier today issued with a 12-month ban on attending Penrith junior matches over the incident, in which they allegedly physically and verbally threatened three young match officials after Saturday's game at Glenwood.

They will now not be available for selection for Saturday's game against the Warriors in Auckland.

An NRL spokesperson said the game's governing body was working closely with the Sharks on an appropriate sanction for bringing the game into disrepute.

An incident report obtained by the ABC yesterday said David Fifita was acting as a trainer and allegedly said to the referee "you're a [This word has been automatically removed]ing disgrace mate". When he failed to stop the verbal abuse, the match official tried to record the incident on his mobile phone, the report said. This allegedly prompted Andrew Fifita to walk into a roped-off area and say, "delete that now or I'll smash you", before charging towards the referee, forcing numerous people to intervene to hold him back.

However, rugby league sources have told the ABC that while the referee had attempted to record the confrontation on his mobile phone, in his flustered state he had not pressed record. The match official said in the report the behaviour displayed by the Fifita brothers made him feel "very uncomfortable and threatened", and that if people had not physically intervened "the matter had the potential to escalate into a physical altercation".

Following the decision to stand the pair down, the Sharks said it was reviewing evidence from those who saw what happened, including match officials, participating club representatives, ground officials and independent witnesses. The players will now be given the opportunity to review that evidence. The club said it was clear there were conflicting accounts of what occurred.

Ridiculous… We need blokes like him to toughen up our pack. I'd be happy having the bloke who punches out every d/head if it means winning.

How bout we give a shet about our public image when we are winning premierships every 4-5 years.

What we need TW is tough skillful players, not Richard Craniums that think they're tough, when in reality they're Idiots on and off the field. :crazy

- Wonder if this may have an impact on Ava's contract situation? You'd reckon there'd be more than one club prepared to sit back and see what happens with Lodgey here….

I reckon they are probably trying to find a TPA for Ava to try and protect what precious salary cap space we have left

Well I hope so anyway

Hope you're right Happy. I like Ava. Hate to lose him!

The video footage which apparently caused all this is now said to have never existed. Sounds like someone's been paid under the table.

Its not about public image, it's about this idiot who's own stupidity has now cost him a 3rd club, a lot hasn't been made public & i'm sure more will come out when he's gone but he's a problem & one that needs to be punted.

Agree with The POM on this one. It's fine to be aggressive on the field if it's controlled, but Lodge, well he's got some issues Watto, and I'm not sure he's going to sort them out until it's too late.

I see these two imbeciles on TV last night walking into their brand new looking, beatiful house down near the water somewhere Im guessing Cronulla way…..they dont realise without the game they have nothing, yet theyre crapping all over the game.
Make an example of them...punt em. Ungrateful turds

Lines need to be drawn in the sand Ink, and this probably isn't a bad way to start. Set the standard.

I recall Sheens copped a heap of flack for removing Fifita from the club. Perhaps he just had the experience to know it is better to cut your losses.

A good mate of mine grew up with them.
He said this has been how they've been their whole lives.
Pretty much not welcome in their home town because of how they've acted.

Genuine big ego town hero gronks that think they're a lot better than they really are.

As much as I didn't like him at the time, we need more refs like Bill Harrigan - he wouldn't take crap from anyone. The refs these days are too passive and vulnerable to being manipulated by the influential players

No I wasnt happy at the time, but gradually Ive been glad hes not at our club regardless of how well hes (occasionally) played

No surprise he seems to have gotten worse if anything under the sharks cheating culture and Flanagan, who seems to be of a similar mould to the fifita bros

Not blowing my trumpet here, but I was happy he got moved on. Had a crap attitude and relied on his fend way too much.

Anyway, he's Cronulla's problem now. Could you imagine the media circus if he were still playing for Wests? #clubincrisis

Fifita's welfare crucial, says Sharks boss
By Darren Walton July 29, 2015, 3:04 pm

Andrew Fifita's mental welfare is a major consideration as Cronulla and the NRL continue to investigate allegations that the representative star and twin brother David threatened match officials last weekend. The twins have been stood down by the Sharks pending the conclusion of the investigation and banned for 12 months from Penrith junior rugby league matches following the incident at Glenwood on Saturday.

Andrew Fifita earlier this season revealed he suffered from depression last year after losing his NSW State of Origin and Australian Test spots and enduring the stress of having a multi-million-dollar deal with Canterbury ripped up. Gorman admits the issue is a delicate one.

"His history has been documented and we have a major, major welfare focus on every single player in our club obviously," Gorman said on Wednesday. "There's a duty of care policy for all stakeholders in this and that's why we haven't made comments at all publicly about any of the stakeholders, whether it's been officials, the local association or any of our own players. "Our club has a major focus on duty of care across the board, including Andrew and David obviously."

Andrew Fifita is alleged to have said "I'll smash you" to a referee, but has since claimed he only threatened to smash a phone after the official filmed the incident and threatened to use it as evidence against the NRL star. "He seems to have made those comments publicly," Gorman said. "I don't really want to pre-empt the case itself, prejudice it. "I think there have been some comments by other parties in the last couple of days which haven't been helpful for the players trying to prepare properly for this. "(But) I have gone on the record and said that there certainly is some debate in the players' minds about the facts presented."

Gorman admitted if Fifita's claim that he didn't threaten the referee was proven true, "there would be a margin of difference absolutely". The Sharks are hoping to close the matter as soon as possible.
"Both us and the NRL continue to get all the evidence and supporting statements that we can, allow the players time to engage their own legal representatives and be well represented to come and present whatever case they choose to present," Gorman said. "We are hopeful of getting that done very, very quickly … so that whatever the outcomes are, they can be made public and we can move forward."

The brothers sat out training with the Sharks on Wednesday but were scheduled to have a gym session in the afternoon. "They're obviously distressed and disappointed, but we're working as hard as we can to keep their spirits up," Gorman said.

Skipper Paul Gallen, who re-signed with the club for a 16th season on Wednesday, said he was hopeful of having the Fifitas back on deck this season, but conceded their fate was out of his hands.
"Hopefully a decision can be made as quick as possible for everybody's sake," he said.

Sounds like SKD.
In a mental institution one week (just prior to a court appearance coincidentally) , 4 days later back at training
