Tensions are running high inside the corridors of 2GB with the station's two biggest stars at loggerheads.
It is well known around the station that undisputed talkback king Alan Jones and his would-be heir apparent Ray Hadley have little affection for each other.
Those feelings spewed forth into the spotlight recently when Jones went in to bat for long-term colleague Andrew Moore, who has been heard on 2GB for the best part of three decades. Moore had fallen foul of Hadley over a scheduling change that effectively saw Moore lose his Sunday gig so Hadley could expand his presence on the station. When Moore refused to fill in for Hadley, observers said their working relationship became "completely toxic".
In the wash-up the talkback big guns have been playing tug-o-war with 2GB management, namely Macquarie Radio chairman Russell Tate, over the treatment of Moore, who had also been a long-term voice on Hadley's Continuous Call football program and has told friends he had considered Hadley a "good mate".
"Hadley wouldn't even say his name on air, it was that toxic … Andrew was gutted, after so many years he didn't feel as though he deserved to be treated like that," an insider told PS.
Indeed PS has confirmed that Moore retained the services of a lawyer and had compiled a 40-page file on the matter. Watching from the sidelines are senior executives from Fairfax Media, publisher of the Herald, which announced last year plans to merge its radio business with Macquarie.
However, instead of taking Hadley on in a legal fight, Moore has opted to leave the station, finishing up on Friday after filling in for Jones over the summer break.
Moore has been poached by ABC Radio, which is hatching big plans to take on 2GB and Hadley, using Moore as its voice of rugby league. He starts at the ABC in a fortnight.
Hadley's previous grievances with colleagues are well documented. Last year it was Steve Blocker Roach, who fell foul of the controversial radio announcer after he unleashed a tirade of abuse at a 24-year-old producer back in August. It was Hadley who took a public stand against Roach's behaviour, airing his disdain for bullying, less than a year after Hadley himself had settled out of court following bullying allegations levelled at him by another junior 2GB staffer, Richard Palmer, who recorded the alleged abuse on his iPhone and played it to management.
