Anthony Griffin sacked

Has anyone thought that this is just gould sacking the guy because Nathan Cleary has signed with the Tigers?

Ok right field thought

Gould knows he has the cattle to win but they aren’t responding to grandpa griffin.

He also knows the cattle is about to be sold off - Cleary to us, Maloney retires at some point

Last chance - sack coach and give 2018 a red hot go!

Thoughts?

I agree.

This will more than likely affect Wests. I believe we were a big chance at signing a few Panthers forwards from 2020\. May still happen but would of happened if Griffin was still coach.

This is a surprise so close to the finals and will have a negative impact up the club moving forward I think.

Hopefully the tigers can be the recipient of some good new from this and pick off some juicy cuts that fall off the bone.

Is Moses ciraldo’s manager by any chance? Surely Todd Payton’s name will be thrown around tomorrow

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on this forum something along the lines of Nathan is most likely to stay if Griffin is gone can't remember who posted it though

Freddy is no chance imo. Unless he relinquishes his Blues role. I don’t think the NSWRL want their Blues coach coaching at club level. Pretty sure it’s prerequisite.

Is it though?? I am not sure. If it is then maybe Bennett is the plan.

Gus wouldn’t want Bennett. He’d rather someone he feels he has power over. He wouldn’t have that with Bennett.

https://wwos.nine.com.au/2018/08/06/18/16/jamie-soward-comments-on-penrith-panthers-anthony-griffin-sacking

Former Panthers star Jamie Soward says Anthony Griffin's "boring" and ineffective game plan is ultimately what got him sacked, with the 2010 premiership player claiming Penrith's players had started to revolt against their coach's tactics.

Speaking to NRL.com Soward, who left the club in 2016 after his own relationship with Griffin broke down, said the Panthers' comeback victories against Manly and the Raiders in the last two weeks had been a result of the players abandoning Griffin's game plan after falling behind.

It's an astonishing claim that would explain why the Panthers felt they could not wait until the end of the season to change their coach, with Griffin leaving the club while it sits fifth on the ladder and prepares to embark on a finals campaign.

"At some stages throughout this year they've played with some of the most boring game plans in the first half that I've seen from any side and only started playing their normal style or the style they're comfortable with once they're behind," Soward said.

"People will say 'it's working for them', thay've had six double digit comebacks this year, five of those have been against bottom eight sides, so for me his game planning and lack of player management, player feel is what's gone against him."

Soward said Griffin had also suffered from his headmaster style of player management, claiming Panthers players felt training was "like going to school", with the day to day grind wearing them down.

"(He's not) one of those guys who can separate footy from off the field stuff and vice versa," Soward said.

"It was all about footy 24/7 and it became more like going to school rather than bouncing into training and getting performances out of them.

"That's how Penrith have played this year."

Griffin's immediate departure has given assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo the massive task of stepping into the head coaching role for the rest of the season but Soward said he was confident the change would be positive.

Contrasting Griffin's style with Ciraldo's, Soward said the players would get a more understanding mentor for the rest of the season.

"Cameron Ciraldo's the perfect man for the job," Soward said

" … I know the players respect him and love having him out there, he's been part of the club for a long time now and he's mature enough to be able to separate that role and also young enough to understand that things are going on away from the footy.

"A lot of those young players have young families and I think that's what went against Anthony, he wanted them to be 24/7 footy and it became boring for them and it became repetitive and that's what counted against him."

Was thinking along those lines. Nothing fires a team up like the sacking of coach.

NC is going and he doesn't want Griffen anymore so sack him and fire the team up for a possible gf win.

Ivan hates Gus. Seriously why would he go back to the bloke who sacked him and has now booted his replacement? What benefit would there be to sacking Griffin before the season was over if this was the plan? Buckley's chance…

Excellent Comment.

Gould's tenure as GM at the Panthers started with a statement that the club would win the premiership within 5 years that was 8 years ago.

In the 8 years he has fired 3 coaches.

The pressure is not on whoever coaches now or in the future the pressure is now on Gould to deliver.

Like everybody and everything he to has an expiry date. In the not too distant future that might become obvious even to the Panthers present kowtowing board.

I think the new coach of Penrith will be…..
\

Billy Slater...

But seriously it wont be IC. The Cleary's will never admit it publicly but their opinion of Gus is not very high.

Hooper pooper actually thinks ivan is heading for penrith 😂😂

That's enough laughter for the rest of the year

Get off the pipe you pelican

If I was Ivan I would say "I will comeback to Penrith" to Gus then backflip after they sacked Griffin

Maybe Gould will try and poach Ivan so father and son will be together !
:eek:pen_mouth:

One hundred percent that this is Gus's master plan, please don't ask me to name source though. Keeping Ivan at the Tigers will foil Gus's master plan ! We must keep Ivan at Tigers at all costs and not let Gus stop having nightmares for sacking Ivan in the first place !!

Ivan is signed until end of 2020\. He would have to break his contract as i don't think WT would release him. There would be an almighty stoush in court and i would imagine WT would argue that Gould and Penrith were up to their necks in Ivan breaking his contract and would sue accordingly.
The other option is more a long term view - they have already signed Ivan from 2021 and will offer Nathan a 5 yr deal from 2020\. But that is totally left field and highly unlikely.

Will find out how they plan to do it and I shall post again later tonight when I do. To me Ivan is gold !!
