ANZ Stadium or Allianz?

While we'd all like to think that one day we may return to our favourite spiritual homes of Leichhardt & Cambo full time, I think most realize we need to take 1/3 of our games to a big venue to supplement income, as the suburban grounds just are not viable financially.

The clubs deal with the SCG trust & Allianz finishes this year.

I think a return to ANZ, (Telstra as it was known when we were last there) would be of benefit to us. Geographically it makes sense…I imagine it would be a lot more convenient and centralised for our Sydney based support. Better parking, better public transport, better access and egress.

The planned work - if it ever gets the green light - which it will eventually, looks great.

SYDNEY'S ANZ Stadium could be turned into a fully roofed, rectangular football ground enabling fans to sit on the sidelines under a visionary plan to be unveiled today by Sport Minister Graham Annesley.
>
The stadium upgrade is outlined in a new video masterplan for Sydney Olympic Park, which also envisages new clubs, bars, restaurants, a gymnasium, pool and a rock climbing wall on ANZ Stadium.
>
The masterplan, obtained by The Daily Telegraph, comes as the stadium's operators, Stadium Australia Group, push for the state government to commit funds to upgrade the 14-year-old stadium.
>
They say the stadium must remain competitive with Asian and other Australian venues to ensure Sydney continues to attract major events, such as this month's Manchester United football match which is forecast to pump $16 million into the NSW economy.
>
Mr Annesley has worked closely with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and the government architect's office to sharpen the long-term vision for the entertainment precinct, including the creation of the video which includes animation of a roof opening over the stadium.

"This video provides people with an idea of what is possible for the future of Sydney Olympic Park in keeping with the masterplan for the precinct," he told The Daily Telegraph.
>
"It's a very exciting glimpse of the future as the park continues to evolve as a constant reminder of the wonderful Sydney Olympic legacy left to the people of NSW."

The plan also envisages a **_new pub_** opposite The Brewery near the Novotel hotel.

Futuristic photographs of the stadium show how new seats at the try-scoring ends of the stadium would be able to be reconfigured to be pushed closer to the field. Seats on the sidelines are already able to push closer in for league, rugby and soccer matches.

There would also be small changes to improve visibility at cricket and AFL matches.
>
The stadium, built as an athletics arena for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, **is often criticised for not offering enough seats close to the action.**
ANZ Stadium managing director Daryl Kerry said the timing of the release of the future vision was significant as Sydney was about to host its biggest month of sport since the Olympics, with the British Lions and State of Origin series deciders, leading to the Manchester United game.
"Combining a roof and moving stands at each end of the stadium to bring fans closer to the action would create an unrivalled atmosphere for the biggest sporting events held in the country," Mr Kerry said. **"Imagine if we can move those 15,000 Blatchys Blues fans at State of Origin, or the Terrace Australis (Socceroos) or Wallabies supporters groups, _to within 5m of the field?"_**
The new seating arrangement could mean the stadium's capacity shrinks slightly from 83,500 to about 80,000, depending on the final engineering design.

Canterbury Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said it was time the government made a new investment at ANZ Stadium. He said a roof and better configured seating were "overdue". "This is Australia's best multi-purpose stadium and Sydney sports fans would really get behind these new plans - it would take us to the next level," he said.
>
The government hopes the launch of the masterplan video will stimulate new private investment in the precinct.
>
Its launch comes only months after Stadium Australian Group offered to sell ANZ Stadium back to the government for $100 million.
>
Mr Annesley backed the move, but Treasury rejected it, leading to doubts about the future viability of the stadium. Stadium Australia is now prepared to fund part of the development if the government commits to a lease extension of about 30 years when its present lease ends in 2031.

"Private enterprise will be working with government to develop a funding model that can deliver this vision for the Stadium in the near term," Mr Kerry said. "There have been suggestions the three major events in July could generate $50 million for the NSW economy so an investment in the stadium is, in effect, an investment in NSW."
>
The operator will also begin talks with key sporting groups, including the NRL, AFL, ARU, Cricket Australia and Football Federation Australia about funding the upgrade.

I would walk away from the suburban grounds we are not Wests or Balmain time for the Weststigers to break the shackles and play out of a modern arena that is capable of being in a central area in the city with good transport and parking.
There is no beating around the bush with this ,you can not charge top $$$ for memberships and seat members on concourse levels.
As much as I think it not the greatest place to watch footy all though not bad ANZ has all the facilities for the modern fan. I believe to Tigers would double there paying members if this move was made …...1 ground that's my opinion.

Homebush is an atmosphere-free albatross that Sydney burdened itself with by virtue of getting awarded the Olympics during the worst period in history for stadium design. Look at the way new stadia are getting built nowadays: the out of town bowls are being abandoned in favour of more urban settings like Etihad in Melbourne. I absolutely loathe the idea of having to go out to bloody Homebush (changing trains because they never put in a direct line, of course), to drink mid-strength beer while sitting miles away from the pitch in a ground that will be quarter full if we're lucky.

As it happens I'm going to Homebush this evening for the Lions game and we're having to make plans around going to Concord West and walking across the park because it will be literally impossible to get a couple of beers anywhere near the ground. By contrast at the SFS we would have the choice of several hundred venues in the city and Surry Hills. Yet apparently Homebush has "better facilities" - I can only assume that means a PA system which nearly squeezes my brains out through my nose because it's so loud.

ANZ and 2041 they are going to have 16 open bars outside the round tonight so if you can't get a beer their you are in massive trouble. I say lets have 2 games each at Leichardt and Campbelltown and then 8 at ANZ

16 bars and 60,000 British males. After seeing the bar queues at the Hordern for the Stone Roses (similar crowd demographic) I'll be sticking with Concord ta.

Probably will come down to who is willing to pay us to play at their stadium, unfortunatley i think the club will go with the best deal financially.

ANZ - adding Souths and Dogs away games (possibly more) - would see a membership at 6/4/4 = 14 games and potentially cheaper. tbh I wouldn't be surprised if we lose a game from LO/CSS if the deal is good enough financially, it'd be shame of course - would mean 8/3/3 split.
If the kids kick on next year and 2015+ it would potentially allow the club to bring in a premium event marketing option for LO/CSS (provided the NRL draw and game time/day is kind - the potential saturday afternoon slot maybe could help if it catches on).

I guess the assumption exists that ANZ could be for the greater good for RL in Sydney - central venue, reciprocated memberships, ample room and facilities. City rail direct trains for game days is important. It has potentially to be a disaster too…but from memory our crowd average was best when we played at ANZ with a young exciting side, if we do go with ANZ we can only hope it will be deja vu.

x 1,000,000

I love the SFS anyway. It always feels homely to me. It is intimate and there is great viewing all over. Best stadium in Sydney.

Update: physically impossible to buy a drink inside the ground or out without queuing for at least half an hour last night, from an hour and a half before kick off.

Well, I was responding to a comment which read, and I quote, "if you can't get a beer their you are in massive trouble". So obviously someone is off their head.
