Are the Wests Tigers Improving? Stats to break it down.

Are the Wests Tigers improving?
A question that we all have probably asked. In order to accurately see, I have decided to check it out through stats.
Bold stats allude to the better round the Tigers had in accordance with the stats in the last two years.
So if your brave and want to see how painfully mediocre the tigers are. Dig in

Round 1:

Possession in 2023: 56%

Possession in 2024: BYE

Completion rate in 2023: 71%

Completion rate in 2024: BYE

Post Contact metres in 2023: 625m

Post Contact metres in 2024: BYE

Effective Tackle % in in 2024: BYE

Errors in in 2023: 14

Thus, so far in round 1, improvements cannot be assessed.

Round 2:

Possession in 2023: 52%

Possession in 2024: 45%

Completion rate in 2023: 63%

Completion rate in 2024: 81%

Errors in in 2023: 18

Errors in in 2024: 9

2023 Result: Loss

2024 Result: Loss

We can see a slight improvement in Post Contact metres, yet a substantial drop off in tackle breaks. A decent improvement in completion rate, although 81% isn’t great. No improvement in tackle efficiency (drops off by 2%)

Round 3:

Possession in 2023: 52%

Possession in 2024: 46%

Completion rate in 2023: 70%

Completion rate in 2024: 86%

Errors in in 2023: 14

Errors in in 2024: 6

2023 Result: Loss

2024 Result: Win

A notion I am tending to see is that although this season we have an increase in run metres, we don’t get far enough tackle breaks as we have prior.

Round 4:

Possession in 2023: 47%

Possession in 2024: 47%

Completion rate in 2023: 78%

A sloppy win for 2024. Regressed in nearly all categories minus completion rate and post contact metres.

Errors in in 2023: 13

Errors in in 2024: 9

2023 Result: Loss

2024 Result: Loss

Nothing improving except completion by a tiny amount and a couple less errors. Only 10 less post contact metres yet 8 less tackle breaks, YIKES…

Round 8:

Errors in in 2023: 5

Errors in in 2024: 8 (+ 2 sin bins)

2023 Result: Win

2024 Result: Loss

On paper could be the best game in ages. Probably the best tigers game in the last two years minus the Leichardt Cowboys beauty.

It’s hard to compare stats week on week over two seasons due to the inconsistency of variables….different sides, different opposition, injuries to all sides and opponents, where the games were played, weather etc…

I see improvement in attitude in regard to trying to play 80 minutes
I see marginal improvement in defence
I think our attack has gone backwards
I think our discipline has gotten worse
I think our effort plays are possibly better? Maybe…
All in all, just as bad as last year for mine. Our only chance of winning more games is the origin period.
One thing I was pleased to see on the weekend was our outside backs (especially wingers) not rushing up and in , we were actually moving up and sliding.
Even there first try they didn’t run around us it was just a one on one missed tackle winger on winger.
The defence coach has changed the way we defend thank goodness.

These are far better stats. Puts in perspective. It wouldn't all be poor discipline that gets us these sinbins. Bias must play a place
Sinbin #1 - Round 2 v Raiders = Stef gave the ref a gobful. Bin warranted? Unsure.
Sinbin #2 - Round 4 v Parramatta = Galvin dangerous contact. Bin warranted? Yes.
Sinbin #3 - Round 8 v Brisbane = Fainu professional foul. Bin warranted? Yes.
Sinbin #4 - Round 9 v Bulldogs = Klemmer referee descent. Bin warranted? Yes.
Sinbin #5 - Round 9 v Bulldogs = Seyfarth striking. Bin warranted? Yes.
Sinbin #6 - Round 10 v Knights = Bula professional foul. Bin warranted? Yes.
Sinbin #7 - Round 11 v Dolphins = Naden dangerous contact. Bin warranted? Yes.
Sinbin #8 - Round 11 v Dolphins = Olam dangerous contact. Bin warranted? Yes.

For mine, 7 were definitely warranted and expected. Not sure what went down with Stef v Raiders but from the refs reaction, Stef went pretty hard at him and after all the penalties, the ref had reached his limit.
The biggest concern is that in our last 4 games we have copped 6 sinbins and 4 suspensions. Our boys now have a huge bullseye on their foreheads as they run out to play and even though they are attempting to temper their general behaviour, they have almost lost control of it at times with explosive instances of brain fades. In those same 4 games we have given away 27 penalties and 7 ruck infringements, which isnt too bad and certainly on par with their opponents. However we have also had 8 players put on report in this month of games...therein lies the difference.

Note: While this analysis provides valuable insights into team performance, it does not encompass all variables affecting our gameplay. E.g. our team lineup often varies from week to week due to injuries and other factors, which may impact our performance in ways not fully captured here.
Can we just turn to the back page and get the answer?

In short.

Negatives:
  1. Lack of attacking threat.
  2. Inefficient use of possession.
  3. Defensive lapses (conceding long-range tries, limiting our score trying opportunities).
  4. Struggle in generating metres.
Positives:
  1. Low error rate: the Wests Tigers have one of the lowest average error rates per game in the NRL.
  2. Strategic kicking game: Opponents average metres gained on tackle two against the Tigers is among the lowest in the NRL.
  3. Defensive improvement: Wests Tigers rank among the top teams in restricting opponents metres gained on tackles two and four.
  4. Resilience: Despite challenges, Wests Tigers opponents have one of the lowest average starting positions on tackle one in the NRL.
Overall, the analysis suggests that while the Wests Tigers face significant challenges, there are also areas of strength and potential for improvement. The key issue is the team's difficulty in converting possession into points.

I reckon you could have easily been describing the Bulldogs of 2022/23 here.

You throw in a Stephen Crichton, Bronson Xerri & Connor Tracey and it’s a potential top eight side.

Turuva and Luai coming, another dangerous back please.

Thanks Lauren.
Now what about the answer to the age old question of how to get then Tigers winning.

Considering all of that, it looks like there’s plenty of effort, but it isn’t coordinated?
I could be wrong but, having a coach and a half on the same page would be a start in the right direction.
pleased to hear Sullivan is focussed on improving his game and fighting for that 7 jersey.
If I can be so bold? I think Benji needs to settle on a spine and run spine workshops. Get those 5 players coordinated first, then they will do most of the heavy lifting for him.
