Are we a well coached side?

As far as I can tell, WT have been the most unorganised team in the NRL for some years. In all these years, our backlines makes the same defensive mistakes. As soon as the opposition spreads the ball it's like "here we go again". Almost every other backline adjusts when the ball is spread. They move up in defence as a line rather than stand back. They rush the opposition attack.

And what of the sparkling attack WT were once known for? Gone for years.

When teams are well-coached, the players improve. No one seemed to improve under Madge. Not sure anyone's improved under Sheensy this year either.

I question how well coached we really are.. we are very poor (probably the worst in the NRL) in the fundamentals below::

1) attacking short dropouts
2) defending short dropouts
3) catching bombs
4) defending in one line on the edges
5) attacking backline moves with purpose and an outcome.
6) attacking grubbed in goal kicks
7) attacking red zone bombs

The quality of the squad is a far bigger problem than the coaching. We have too many fringe FGers who hold their positions due to lack of better replacements. I believe most coaches know what it takes to win games but not all players have the ability to execute it.

They make some dumb mistakes on the field … is this because of the coaching?

I’m not sure Bellamy or Bennett coaching this squad would win many more games… what they wouldn’t do however is keep picking the same guys week after week who aren’t first grade standard…
All very well if you have depth.
And us???

They tell us that the player feedback around Benji is really good.
... hopefully that's true.

I can see younger players responding really well to him, it's a shame we couldn't bring him through the lower grades coaching and let him develop his skills, going through the normal process like Payten did.

Anyone who thinks we are a well coached side doesn’t know football.
Most of our squad can’t even draw and pass. Most of our squad can’t hit a hole. Our defensive techniques and structures are puss and when we get into the opposition red zone, everyone panics. Very few can catch a highball and no one knows what to do when one goes up. I could go on and on and on….

So much work to do…I don’t envy those with coach in their titles.

I've said we've been a poorly coached side for a few years. I thought it was bad under Madge but this is worse, to the point I wish we didn't sack Madge even though I wanted him gone more than anyone. Effectively since Cleary it's been like that, at least under Cleary we had better defense with a FAR worse squad, the issue was always attack, but even then it was still better than what we have now.

So many problems. How do you know if the coaches are duds or not.

Get someone from down the local park then … couldnt be worse then Kepaoa… how many times you get to see his lack of talent and effort?

Or maybe see what you have with Feledy in a meaningless end of season game

Except that teams (under NRL rules) have to come from the nominated squads of 30 etc etc.
Again no depth within our squad.

As dirty as I was with Cleary, there is no doubt he can coach. Often the sign of a good coach is his ability to get average players to perform to the very best of their ability consistently. Apart from the time with Cleary, I have not seen much of this happening over the past 12 years. I know I'm clutching at straws, but effort has been OK for the most part this year.

I think our position on the ladder and our dismal attack record answers that question. The only game we looked anywhere near well coached was in our first game against the Cowboys, who just didn’t turn up. Next season maybe a different story with the addition of a organising half and some rising stars, one can only hope.
