Are we a well coached side?

Our best back is a half season rookie.

I’m not sure you are comparing us to the best sides in the comp, who are absolutely stacked with first graders and stars.

Edit: We lost quite a few close ones but we were obviously a bottom four roster imo.
I think if you compare our roster to teams who are near us on the ladder we have the better team so to come last again & only win 4 games is a huge disappointment. We weren’t coached to play to our strength which was our forward pack instead we tried to blitz the opposition with our attack when we didn’t have the backline to do so.

You aren’t going to score enough points to win games in the NRL without backs who trouble the scorers. Other teams wingers are scoring 15-20 tries each. Injuries to our halves contributed but you’ll find I called this in the pre-season. Our centres and wingers are reserve graders, discarded by other clubs for a reason.

The argument is not that we are well coached, the argument is that no matter who the coach, you need the cattle. Cleary, Madge, Sheens and Potter have all had success when they have had cattle.
That's not an excuse when the coach releases better players, Hastings, Laurie, Ofahengaue and keeps lesser ones. A coach should have a feel for what players can achieve. I'm not prepared to let Sheens off the hook for his retention choices. We could have at least dodged the spoon if we had kept these players.

From the outside looking in, it seems like we have a distinct lack of direction and lack of a plan, therefore it appears we have been badly coached for much of this season.
In saying this how do we really know if we have the players with the ability to execute what our coaches have been asking for ?
The lack of depth in attack is one aspect I cannot understand. Our second rowers in particular seem to stand much flatter than any opposing team, not sure if that’s coached or the team not following instructions.

And the reason we discarded Laurie, Hastings and Ofahengaue?? Our (recently departed) coach cannot discern talent. It is my hope that Marshall is better at it.

I believe we went 4 wins 20 losses in 2022 with those three players being front and centre.

You simply look at the coaches’ records when they have a talented roster.

No.
We get rid of winners and keep average players.
I don't understand the rationale.
Imagine a halves pairing of Hastings and Laurie this season. We wouldn't be spooners again.
Api, Ice, Klemmer, Bateman, Stef, Blore and Bula all average to you? 🤔

Sometimes I wonder if people understand that at the wrong club, some players just flounder. But throw them into a good system with a good coach and they can transform. Want proof? Billy Walters. You can’t tell me there aren’t other players at this club who appear to be drowning that wouldn’t have the same success. And to balance things out, the transformation goes both ways. Look how far Ice has regressed this year at a mediocre club with mediocre coaching

I think fans from this club understand that better than most. I don't think Ice has regressed he just individually isn't enough to make a significant difference. When you come from a team that dominates it's opposition to a team that gets dominated their is only so much any player can do. Losing is mentally demoralizing and that impacts on performance.

You can’t say that about Api. Players with genuine class overcome and shine.

Are we really a better team with these 3 guys in our squad. Joe O was great for us but we have one spot available in our roster with a tonne of middle forwards.

Hastings is a joke on this forum. It's freaken bizzare he gets talked up.
Laurie plays awesome footy every so often.

I'm glad all of those players aren't here.

Exactly.

Have we gotten value for money out of Stef and Bateman ? How have Klemmer and IP performed ? They've been better than Stef and Bateman but have they been good enough ? Personally I think IP is really putting in and Klemmer has had plenty of good games but these guys aren't busting the line very often.

Forget the argument about our halves being the problem because Api seems to be able to shine.
