Auckland nines

I've said for months that the whole thing is a joke - a bit of pre-season hit and giggle which no serious NRL contender is going to let its important players get anywhere near, or at least not take any risk in. Now Fittler's coming back for it I think I have my confirmation. In fact, I've made a little ranking of the least important sporting events:
1) Beach soccer.
2) Mixed doubles tennis.
3) Nine-a-side rugby league.
4) The current SCG test.
5) Golf.

You forgot the Hopman Cup

I don't think Freddy playing devalues the 9s. Nobody was rating it as the next SOO. The money on offer gives it some clout, but its still just a pre season comp that creates some interest and gives the boys a hit out.

I think the Freddy thing is a whole marketing sham. I highly doubt he will play.

But just for one minute let's imagine it's true. What a slap in the face to every Roosters reserve grade player. Out of the three teams they have, they can't rustle up a dozen or so players? Fair dinkum…

Guys you do realise the roosters have a trial game on the same weekend (so I've been told), they have plenty of opportunity to give all their players a run and still play Freddie. Who is it hurting by allowing him the to play.

I think all teams should pick a club legend or recently retired player, even if they play just a couple of minutes off the bench. Would be great for publicity. We could pick Benny Galea or Hodgo, Broncos could pick Lockyer, Joey could line up for the Knights, Parra could have Hindy, Saints Ben Hornby, Kimmorley for the Sharks, Orford for Manly, etc, etc.

Not a half bad idea Tommy. Would give people another chance to see their former favourites run out again.

I think if you start to do that it becomes a circus act.
If you want a Legends game that should be completely separate. Maybe make it a charity event. A bit like the NSW v QLD ex players game from a couple of years ago and a couple of fans won a position in the team.

It'd become a circus if you picked more than one. Let's face it, the nines isn't something that will be taken very seriously by the clubs anyway. It's a revenue raising exhibition event for the game and not every team will load their sides with stars. I don't think introducing a one legend per team rule would make the competition any more of a novelty event than it already is.

eh, i still think nines will be more serious than you might expect.

it won't be full blown NRL level phiscality and commitment, but teams will be out there to win and more importantly cement 1st grade spots/win money.

i dont think this is a good idea tbh. at the end of a long career, most players are pretty broken up body-wise and if you push the boundaries too far they would get hurt. if fittler thinks he can handle it then nobody should have to go easy on him or anyone else playing.

i just think it could be a bad look if you have a legend playing and he is stretchered off…

is the 9s comp being televised at all?

Fox Sports Pacman

Fittler actually had to pass a full medical clearance before he could play in the 9's

makes my point moot then! didnt even think of this at the time, but i should have… :crazy

It would appear we've blown out with the bookies going from $9.00 to $15.00\. All before our teams even been named…
