Ava

I just want to give the big guy a wrap. Towards the end of last season when our team fell in a heap I thought he was one of the few guys who could hold his high after most games.

Very much an unsung hero. Runs hard, tackles hard, makes very few mistakes and rarely gets dominated. No fuss, no garbage in his game and seems very popular with his team mates.

This year he looks the fittest he has been and is ready to make a huge impact. In the 9s, last night and by all reports in AS he has been outstanding. He is 24 this year and in his 3rd full season as a full time first grader, so really coming into his prime.

With all the talk of Taupau starting I don't think Ava would look out of place with the 8 or 10 on his back either. Wishing him all the best in what I think will be his break through year.

Ava's Now a very solid first grader. In a month or so I'm hoping we are all saying the same about Sirro and another backrower. We certainly have the front row position covered.

He's not unsung in my book.

I was saying to all my Saints supporters mates that they were crazy to not go after Ava when he was off contract.

I was concerned a new coach may see things differently and a guy like Ava would fall through the cracks, but thankfully it looks like Taylor see's what we all see.

I agree, I was a bit worried that he might get lost behind the flashiness of a Taupau, Woods or Lodge, but I'm glad he's kept his spot. Easily the third best prop we have, second if Marty plays lock.

Ava is underrated when it comes to many fans outside of this club IMO. He definitely has his fans here though, the last year or so has been a steady improvement to the point where he has a well earned permanent spot in the 17.

Seumanufagai stints off the bench last Year were very solid he is a domestic Prop that every team needs….gets through his work in defence and often makes metres after contact...Not flash like a Woods or Lodge and doesn't get the raps he deserves but an important part of the team none the less....

I like the way he goes about his business on the field, he doesn't get bent back and is definitely looking fitter this year. I reckon we'll see him start to come into his own this season.

Seumanufagai comes full circle

Ava Seumanufagai has a new-found agrression heading into the 2015 NRL season.
In just seven years Ava Seumanufagai has gone from a rugby league novice at the Wainuiomata Lions to established first-grader at the Wests Tigers.

As a young kid from Wellington, Seumanufagai jumped on a plane bound for Australia as soon as he finished high school to play in the National Youth Competition for Parramatta, thanks largely to the influence of two men – then recruiter Rod Reddy and former Eels' Under 20s coach Matt Cameron.

His time at Parramatta came to an end in 2011 partly because he "was missing home and was a big sook" and he ended up at the Wests Tigers the next season.

With Jason Taylor being named coach of the Tigers in September, and with Seumanufagai boasting 40 NRL games to his name, the club's new mentor went about looking for new assistant coaches… and as fate would have it, well, we'll let Seumanufagai fill in the blanks.

"The funny story of JT becoming the coach here is the bloke who recruited me to the Eels was Rod Reddy and Matt Cameron was my Under 20s coach there as well and now they are the assistant coaches here," Seumanufagai grins explaining to NRL.com.

"It's good to see their familiar faces around here now and to see how far we have all come together."

Not only has Seumanufagai travelled full circle in a sense but so too has Cameron and Reddy when it comes to the young career of the 23-year-old prop.

Alongside former Kiwis international and fellow Tigers assistant David Kidwell, the trio of coaches has inspired Seumanufagai to follow in their footsteps.

Reddy and Kidwell especially were two of the fiercest forwards in their respective eras and that is not lost on Seumanufagai.

"I guess when you see someone do something you want to follow them. In that sense then, when you see someone on the team get aggressive, that makes you want to follow in their footsteps," he said.

"Hopefully everyone has been picking up what they have brought to the team."

Aggression, or lack of, was something Seumanufagai struggled with in the initial stages of his professional rugby league career.

But with Kidwell and Reddy on his side and a certain comfortableness that has shined through with his experience in both training and playing, Seumanufagai is primed for a huge 2015 season.

"I guess aggression for me is easier to draw upon the more conditioned and fitter I become," Seumanufagai said.

"This pre-season we have been doing a lot more specific conditioning like when you're tired and stuff you can still pick up the aggression and I myself now feel a lot more relaxed because of my past experience.

"We have a lot of young boys coming through so it's definitely time for me to step up and try to start leading the way."

Want to see him with more touches and hit ups

I reckon he will pump out better average metres per hit up than any other forward in 2015

Cronulla struggled to stop him

Massive fan of the bloke never stops trying and seems to have added some more minutes to his game .

Good Luck Ava , now hurry up and sign an extension with the Tigers.

When he develops & has confidence in his second phase game he will become an international. He has a huge amount of potential.

He has come along way in his 40games. And him talking about aggression in the article is a scary thought for the opposition.

We are going to have one killer front row this year!

Good to hear aggression mentioned….needs to put it into action...good player but seems too much of a nice guy, needs some Grrr in his game

Apparently is a thrashing machine, so he shouldn't have trouble finding the confidence to express his aggression. Not that we are looking for fights, just saying that he should be confident within himself to tear oppositions apart knowing he could knock them out.
