Ayshford ill as Tigers' woes grow
Glenn Jackson, Sydney
September 14, 2010

WESTS Tigers' already tattered preparations for Friday night's elimination final against Canberra have been further dented with centre Blake Ayshford quarantined after coming down with a mystery illness.

Ayshford has been forced to have blood tests to determine the cause of his illness, and until the results are known - probably tomorrow - the young star will not be allowed to train with the squad, stalling the team's attempts to bounce back from its demoralising loss to Sydney Roosters last Saturday night.

While Tigers doctor Donald Kuah said it was unlikely Ayshford had glandular fever, coach Tim Sheens admitted the team would have a ''makeshift'' squad at training today, with Ayshford joining star five-eighth Benji Marshall on the injured or ill list.

Ayshford is one of seven Tigers battling to be fit for the clash with Canberra, and club officials have been encouraging up to half the squad to spend time in a hired hyperbaric chamber this week to recover from knocks - as well as the fatigue from their 100-minute epic.

Sheens admitted he was in the dark about Ayshford's illness.

''He's had some blood tests done but there are some issues there,'' Sheens said. ''We're just not sure. He was feeling better [yesterday] so we're not totally distressed about it, but we need to wait and see.''

Ayshford feared he had glandular fever - although that is considered unlikely given he has suffered from the illness previously.

Ayshford told website sportsnewsfirst.com.au: "I don't know whether I can play or not. I think I'll be out for the rest of the season, which is really disappointing because this was my first final series.

"I've had it when I was younger but I had strep throat really bad the past few days, I can't eat and my throat is real swollen on the left side.

''I had a sore throat before the game, and on game day I only had four pieces of toast to eat all day. I couldn't eat, my throat was stuffed.''

Sheens will name Marshall at five-eighth today, and was more optimistic that his key playmaker would take the field than he was post-game following his knee troubles.

That said, Marshall remained cautious. ''I'm feeling a bit better but it's still a bit early to tell,'' he said.

''I'm doing as much as I can to get right, and will know more over the next few days. I had a couple of sleepless nights staying up icing it and making sure I do the little things … I'll be making sure I do everything I can. There is a premiership at stake.

''I'm sure the coach will give me every opportunity up to game day. Even if I can't train this week, he has got enough faith in me to know that I will still be able to do the job. If I think I will be right game day, I will play.''

Jesus. They share bottles?? That's just asking for trouble fullstop!

Our backs are truly against the wall folks. If we manage to win this, it will be classed as the club's greatest victory, surpassing the Drags win in 2005, imo.

i asked simon dwyer about it and he said he was really sick before the roosters game, and wasn't at training yesterday

West Tigers in glandular fever scare
Dean Ritchie From: The Daily Telegraph September 14, 2010 12:47AM

THE entire Wests Tigers squad will be closely monitored this week for glandular fever after centre Blake Ayshford underwent blood tests yesterday for the contagious disease.

Ayshford will know the results either late today or early tomorrow but he is almost certain to withdraw from the Tigers' semi-final against the Raiders on Friday night at Canberra Stadium.

"I think I'll be out for the season," he said.

Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys last night revealed his club's medical staff would check all players this week for fear Ayshford's teammates could have also contracted the virus.

Ayshford scored a brilliant try against the Sydney Roosters last weekend and his withdrawal would be a significant setback for the Tigers.

"The doctor is unsure whether Blake has glandular fever," Humphreys told The Daily Telegraph last night. "He had a bout as a youngster so it is unusual to get a second dose, and if that does happen, generally it is a fairly mild dose."

The fact all players share water bottles has Tigers officials on edge.

Asked if his players would be monitored this week, Humphreys said: "The doctor has already spoken to the players. We will certainly be keeping a watch on them.

"But at the moment no other player has shown any signs."

Ayshford only ate four pieces of toast for the entire day before Saturday night's 100-minute epic against the Roosters. He slept virtually all Sunday on his sofa.

There were suggestions last night that injured centre Chris Lawrence may return from a broken jaw and replace Ayshford.

"That will be up to the medical staff," Humphreys said.

Ayshford yesterday told website Sportsnewsfirst he was all but finished for the season.

"I don't know whether I can play or not, I think I'll be out for the rest of the season which is really disappointing because this was my first final series," he said.

"I've had it when I was younger but I had strep throat really bad the past few days, I can't eat and my throat is real swollen on the left side.

"I had a sore throat before the game and on game day I only had four pieces of toast to eat all day.

"I couldn't eat, my throat was stuffed."

Humphreys ruled out talk that Tim Moltzen, who has missed most of the year with a knee injury, would return for the Raiders match.

Yeah chin up mate….we have been written off plenty of times in the past latest being 5 weeks ago when all the 'expert's said we wouldn't win another game and would be lucky to make the 8 ...It's the last 4 years all overs again blah blah blah..

2010 West Tigers have the Steel, Guts, determination and PRIDE that equals if not betters any previous squad we have had IMO...

Look at the man in question ...if he has health issues the certainly didn't bother him against the Rorters...He had a blinder....

The FAT Lady has far from sung...there are more twists and turns left in 2010 for us....

STRAP IN...

I'm hoping its just a mind game being played. Players are in and out right up until running out onto the field. Ayshord has played brilliantly this year but if we do unfortunatley lose him to illness i won't be writing the tigers off.

I heard on the radio today 98.1 I think that he has been cleared of Glandular fever but is still quiet ill.

Heres hoping for a quick recovery !!!!

I think it was just a really bad throat infection that he had. He'll be getting the anti-biotics into him and he should be right to play even if he isn't quite 100%. Remember he was already sick when he played against the Roosters but that didn't stop him from playing well.
