Ayshford

what are everyones thoughts on asyhford? where and how would you play him?

obviously when sirro is back ayshford wont be at five eight, so i expect sheens will just plonk him back to the bench - but i dont think its the right choice.

the theory of ayshford as an impact backrower from the bench sort of makes sense, but from what i've seen from the games he has started there previously, he lacks involvement and often turns up pretty average performances. his best games have been when he is involved from the get go - like today against the roosters. he provided an attacking threat for us with the ball in hand closer to the middle, also knew when to pass it and when to hold it.

if we are going to develop him, we must do what we did with groat and start him in the backrow. how is he meant to have impact in a position he hasnt started regularly in before?

the other two spots i would give to ellis and bell.

fulton is a better player than bell and ayshford, but what he offers is unique. he doesnt need to be beaten up in the opening of the match. he is the sort of guy we need in good condition come the 76th minute mark - in attack and defense. strategically i think we are better off bring him from the bench.

then we have blair who hasnt seem to have gelled as quick as we would have liked, shifting him to the bench might be a good trigger for him to start picking up his game a bit more.

heighington unfortunately just isnt offering enough impact at the moment to warrant a starting spot. bell has been much more effective in the go forward.

id then have murdoch masilla as the rotating prop. fulton and ayshford are both diverse in that they can shift to the backs if need be and fulton to lock.

thoughts?

Ayshford looked back to his dangerous best yesterday, and better than last week where he also looked really good. - Always beat the first man, solid in defense when called upon.

Loved his work.

Whatever rocket Sheens fired up his ass a few weeks ago has worked.

About time.

Would not move Beau to accommodate him however. Not sure where to play him, maybe as an apprentice 2nd row, Lock?

Tough call at the moment. Utai and Tuqiri have found form. Ryan has been the Tigers most consistent back all season and Lawrence is looking a little better each week. Ayshford played well in a beaten side yesterday but I think he'll go back to the bench unless injury strikes.

You want to demote Utai? The bloke was awesome again yesterday.

Aysh is starting to find form again and its about time. He has been very dissapointing this year. I was expecting a massive season from him. Unfortunately, he has relinquished his starting spot and it is now up to him to win it back. He is moving in the right direction but so far I cant find a spot in the 13 for him when we are at full strength.

Agreed! He is finding form lately. Not sure where we can play him when Sirro returns from injury though.

utai to the bench dude get off the crack he is killing it since coming back lote was getting back into some good form but when he hogged the ball instead of passing that killed us cause the scored and game over Tim sheens is in a great spot with everyone getting back to full fitness with no more injuries we should shake the sh&t out of this comp

He seems to have gained some fitness and confidence I think he has played well enough to hold onto the other centre spot with Ryan on the wing and Utai of the bench.

x2

3 Ayshford
5 Ryan

Probably, the best option is to have Utai as our 'utility' player, so the bench:

14 Utai
15 BMM
16 Heighington
17 Cashmere/Moors

I don't think Ryan is a centre. His tries from kicks, etc have come as a last play from him mainly receiving the ball out wide on the flanks. Ayshfords form last Sunday was excellent and I thought was one of our best players. He should be given his chance back in the centres.

Given how Ayshford has been moved around to accommodate other plays this season, it's got me wondering where his future lies. I think Sheens is starting to groom him for the back row as both Reddy and Ryan have been chosen above him this season in his incumbent position a number of times. He's a talented player and can break tackles quite easily due to his frame and has the ability to get the arm free to look for the offload. He's not the quickest lad in the backline so maybe he will be moved into a second row/lock role.

Either that or Sheens is looking to move him on, which I certainly hope isn't the case.

I'd like to see this next year:

1\. Tedesco
2\. Nofoaluma
3\. Ryan
4\. Lawrence
5\. Koroibete
6\. Sironen
7\. Marshall

13\. Ayshford
12\. Anasta
11\. Blair
10\. Galloway
9\. Farah
8\. Woods

14\. Fulton/Heighington
15\. BMM/Thompson
16\. Pettybourne
17\. Fotuaika/Lovett

Is Sironan a fait accompli when he is fit ?
In other words, is he a certainty to come straight back into the starting line up ?

I agree, Ayshford definitely pulled a rabbit out of his hat last Sunday and he has been improving - deserves a starting spot. But Ryan i think performs better in the centres as he tries different things, wouldn't want to be too quick at moving him back to the wing

imo ayshford is a better centre than ryan
ryan is a better winger than utai
ryan is better on the wing than at centre

it all just seems too simple to me, but seems like just to include utai, you are forcing this change of ryan to centre, utai to wing.

aysh at centre and ryan at wing. we've had this combo for a couple of years and it's been successful. idk why this is being changed.

Put Ayshford back where he belongs at centre.
No matter where he plays Ryan is a winger (and a good one) and that's it.
If it looks like a winger , walks like a winger and plays like a winger - it's a winger.
PS Can someone tell Beau other teams are waking up he ALWAYS runs from dummy half - try passing it once or twice to confuse them if you're going to go in there so often.

I don't think so - I mean if Ayshford all of a sudden sets up three tries a game, whilst scoring two himself, i'm sure Sirro won't come back in.

Oh the irony - Ayshford got his spot by usurping a seemingly incumbent Dean Collis, and killing it during a dark period for the Tigers back in 2008\. Now he needs to play blinders to keep his spot.

I just wish the same went for other players in the line-up - we'd have a lot of players playing blinders then..

not IMO, if Aysford and the team play well, perhaps he will stay in 6 adn Siro to the bench.

Ive said before that I dont see us being able to play 3 wingers in the starting side long term, Beau is going well in the centres, but is playing as a winger in reality. All 3 are playing well, so I dont know who should exit the starting side, but im sceptical that we can keep playing them, which would see Blake go into the centres

Ayshford this season hasn't been great and I for one want to see some back to back good performances before giving him his spot back in the centres .

Beau has done nothing wrong while in the centres and Utai and Tuqiri have been doing their jobs

Positions should not be handed out on reputation , they need to be earned

Thats how we create competition for positions and even better performances from all the players
