Backrow depth

Wests are fortunate enough to have plenty of backrow depth ( Ellis, Fulton, heighno, payten, dwyer, shirnack, mataka, akeripa, moors, flannagan, murdoch) and unfortunately in the next few years we will most likely have to choose who to keep. I was wondering what everyones opinins are on who will be worthwhile keeping in the longterm.

As much as I love Todd Payten, he isn't getting any younger - you can expect he will retire or do a stint in Super League as some point in the next few years. Heighno is 27 and probably only has a few years left too.
Ellis and Fulton have proven themselves in the top grade. The other 7 have yet to prove themselves in first grade - fairly safe to assume, not all of them will be able to step up. We really need to sit back and wait a while to see who looks like progressing and becoming a genuine first grade player - we've had a swag of potential backrowers who just haven't fulfilled their potential. I'm not gonna jump the gun on the current lot at this stage.

Replace payton with Fafita
and replace flanagan with dywer
and put Dywer starting and fulton on the bench

Dywer is unfortunately injured at the moment. a great prospect though.

I wouldn't be replacing Fulton with anyone though. He made 43 tackles on Monday night, and scored a ripper of a try.

lol why would you even think of moving Fulton to the bench.

Our backrow is Fulton, Ellis and Rhino and I can't see that changing all year

Fulton Ripped it on Monday - He is our 80minute tackling machine.

Leave as is.

Whats gonna happen with Payton. Hes too good and been too loyal to leave him out of the top 17

Payten will definitely be in the 17 when he returns from injury. Perhaps, on the bench to start.

Will be good to have him coming off the bench, I'd say he'll probably play prop?

I'm a fan of his, but is loyal the best word? He has asked for his release a few times now.

I'd have him at prop and try to run Moors a bit wider of the ruck.

Sheens really needs to rotate our young backrowers this year to give them a taste and see who handles it. Dwyer looks like he's the only one in the clubs long term plans which is down right stupid. Gower, Mataka and Akeripa should all be given a chance. IMO, Mataka and Gower should be in the 17 this week.

Akeripa, Dwyer, Schirnack are all injured…..Who'\ says that there not in the plans...

I'd have Mataka this week too .......but I'm not prepared to write off Flanagan after 15mins of FG.....

I don't think Akeripa has played a firstgrade game has he? Only trials. I'm surprsied he hasn't. He is pretty big and pretty fast. He is a good second rower.

I thought we should have kept Danny Galea. I thought it was stupid using him as a prop though. He was great in defence, put in big hits and would be a very good wide running backrower.

yeah willow i would like to see moors a bit wider too. i'd have moors, flanagan, fifita and cayless on the interchange this week. moors and flanagan coming on as second rowers and fifita and cayless coming on as front rowers.

I'm happy to keep Gower at BRET for this weekend - but yes bring him into first grade after this week. We need him against Wests

Also I agree about Danny Galea, he was an asset to our team and I for one was very sad to see him leave. He is exactly what we need defensively.

i would like to see this in a few years
11.Dwyer
12.Fulton
13.Hyland

15.Mataka
16.Gower

if Hyland can put on a bit more weight he could be great, thats areal worker type backrow though

I'd have Gower well up on the pecking order above Dwyer, Schirnack, Murdoch etc. For mine Taka & David are the only two who should be mentioned when talking about first grade. I like the look of Flanagan, but I reckon he might benefit from a couple of weeks in NSW Cup.
