FOX just aired a great 1989 30 years on with Block, Siro and Elias.

Still painful, but well worth a watch.

FWIW the McGuire 'shepherd' was one of the truly bad decisions. Changed the game and even the Canberra trio on the show all agreed.

30 years on and I still can't believe Ginger Meggs did not score.............

Forgive my memory.... What was the subsequent play from THAT penalty?
I Recall it was about 30 or 40 out from balmain end... Would've put Raiders on the attack immediately

Yes, and the Raiders scored soon after.

I'm a Balmain fan, never hated Canberra for 89. Watched it a million times and never had a hate on them for it. I was hoping they'd have won last night. As per the old adage I follow two clubs: Wests and anyone playing Easts.

I could have copped Raiders losing yesterday in a manner reasonably similar to 1989, unfortunate part is that this would mean a Roosters victory which makes me vomit in my mouth.

A premiership would do wonders in Canberra, does SFA in Bondi. Roosters are not a club that boosts the NRL's national interests in any fashion.

2 reasons - Easts were an ARL team in the Super League war and they at least are a Sydney team.

I don't get that, I hate Sydney-based teams most of all. That's the whole idea of local derbies.

Hate Roosters
Hate Parra
Hate Bulldogs
Hate Dragons
Hate Manly
Hate Sharks
Hate Penrith

probably in that order. I dislike a few other teams as well, but nowhere near as much as I hate Roosters / Eels / Bulldogs.

Wow Super League, that's 25 years ago, even Balmain existed then.

I cannot stand when people want to go for teams just because they are a NSW team. It’s not Origin. Usually they’re casual supporters anyway.

Not a casual supporter but would not cheer for Broncos, Cowboys, Melbourne, New Zealand or Canberra over any Sydney team except for Souffs.

I watched the 89 GF on a Fox replay last week....some of the big names made some serious mistakes particularly Jimmy Jack and Wayne Pearce both had 3 handling errors

Definitely! The following year pales in comparison for me as well, as he was in his prime as the form player and best in the world for mine. To this very day, I still wholeheartedly believe that Balmain would have won on that sunny afternoon 31 years ago.

As for 89, well never much liked back door Benny as a person from juniors days and particularly so after the league's club scam, so just blame him and the pain is gone.

Do people seriously still have a problem with this 30 years later?

Mate, I'm still hanging onto what Darcy Lawler did to the Magpies in the 1963 GF LOL. And reading Jack Gibson's book a coupla years back didn't help. Jack was a prop for us and worked with the big bookies. Common knowledge between them Lawler had backed Saints. (Wests had beaten them in both rounds plus the major semi. I was only 13 but went to the 4 games).

You can let go now.... The ledgers squared.

Your burden absolved... Monkeys off the back

I expect never to hear a whinge about 89 ever again.

Got it?

As long as old wests diehards let go of the whole manly thing...
Only fair

Yes I’ve done that, I actually like Manly now ?

That’s blasphemy

This pretty much gives the story of that day. Gibson was very well connected in the betting industry in those days so when he said that Lawler had backed saints to win he was probably speaking with a far bit of knowledge on it.

@Russell You need to think about living in THIS century - it started quite a while ago 😂😂😂

@happy_tiger Saw Wayne Pearce at the Churchill medal presentation - is he ill? Looked small and sick. Is he that much older than Clyde? Really concerning.

Was on the NRL commission and has Mitchell as a son. If that doesn’t prematurely age you, nothing will.

Much older than Bradley Clyde - he is turning 60 next year I think.

@Telltails Well, without googling it, Junior retired in 1990, probably early 30s, and Clyde debuted in late 80s, so probably a ten year difference at least
