Balmain Leagues Club building site approved

So I’m involved with a group, I help out on the shop floor sometimes so to speak.

There’s a meeting of funders and stuff about changes to operations and lo and behold, the people actually doing the job day in and day out aren’t invited.

Stone-age stuff.
volunteers don't ever get invited to the shareholders meeting

I’m not sure, but everyone I work with (sometimes) in that role are full time paid.

No one would do it voluntarily!

Anyway, the point is that the close relationship between footy clubs and gambling, it’s not necessary.

It’s lazy and of course, contributes to social problems.

Mate I don’t want to get into that rubbish . We are wests tigers . It is an equilibrium of two former clubs , amalgamated to form a new club.
That shit is prehistoric and not relevant to my point, and gives credence to his bullshit
It was merely an observation about the relative marketing value of the two icons. Wests means little more than a point on the compass that also includes Parramatta, Penrith & Canterbury.

Yes, you are absolutely right.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

The Wests Tigers as the living embodiment of all that rugby league has given us.

It’s amazing how one’s life journey starts and ends in this way.

a government grant 10 year thesis, would keep us in fresh lobster in the local off season
Hand it over to AI.

Alas we would still come second to Willie Mason for the Nobel prize for Rugby League advancement.

Pass me a mandible and I’m anyone’s.

Affordable housing in pipeline for former Balmain Leagues Club site

Published: 15 May 2025Released by: Minister for Housing, Minister for Planning and Public Spaces

In a win for people looking for affordable housing close to the Sydney CBD the revamp of the dilapidated former Balmain Leagues Club has been approved, paving the way for the delivery of 59 new affordable homes out of a total of up to 227 apartments.
The updated development application was made possible and approved under the Minns Labor Government’s new Infill Affordable Housing pathway.

This will provide much needed housing for young people and families at a time where Sydney is at risk of becoming a city without a future due to the lack of affordable housing.

The Rozelle site has been derelict for more than 15 years. It will now be rejuvenated with a 2-16 storey mixed use development which in addition to new homes will boast a registered club, new supermarket, community facility and public plaza.

The $285 million project will bring vibrancy to the local area and create 416 construction jobs and 452 operational jobs.

The Infill Affordable Housing planning pathway is a key part of the NSW Government’s new housing reforms and offers height and floor space bonuses of up to 30 per cent for residential developments when at least 10-15 per cent of their total gross floor area is offered as affordable housing.

This is a reform aimed at delivering more affordable housing where it is needed.

To date, under the In-fill Affordable Housing pathway, 10 development applications (DAs) have been approved with a further 38 under consideration.

When accounting for DAs lodged, up to 9,120 private dwellings could be constructed with 2695, affordable homes included.

This is part of the Minns Labor Government’s plan to build a better NSW with a greater choice of homes, so young people, families and workers have somewhere to live in the communities they choose.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said:

“This is a win for young people and families who need housing, local jobs and the effectiveness of the Minns Labor Government’s Infill Affordable Housing Pathway.

“Our governments floor space bonuses mean the site which previously provided no affordable housing will now deliver 200-plus new apartments, including almost 60 much-needed affordable homes.

“The old Balmain Leagues Club site on Victoria Road has been an eyesore for too many years, but will now be transformed into a thriving residential area with a supermarket, registered club, and public plaza.

“This is a resolution to the site that is long overdue.

“The Infill Affordable Housing Bonus is a clear example of how smart planning incentives can drive real results, delivering affordable housing in well-located areas to meet the needs of households on low to moderate incomes.”

Minister for Housing Rose Jackson said:

"After 15 years of delay and decay, this vacant property is finally being transformed into something the community can be proud of — with affordable housing at its heart."

"Fifty-nine affordable homes in a prime inner-city location is a big win — and just the start of what this new planning pathway will unlock across NSW."

"This site has sat empty for far too long. We’re bringing it back to life — with homes, jobs, and services locals actually need."

"Housing is a human right. This project — delivered through the Infill Affordable Housing pathway and backed by our Building Homes for NSW program — is proof we’re serious about turning that principle into reality."

A Wests Tigers branded club would get us closer to looking like a united club.

It would be very strange to stick a Magpie branded club right next to where the team plays at LO. May as well put a Melbourne Storm club there. It would have zero relevance for fans.

Imagine putting a Balmain Leagues Club next to Campbelltown. People would be rightfully asking questions.

We need to start doing things that make sense for Wests Tigers. Not always be looking in the rear view mirror to check in on the feelings of the vocal few.

This is excellent in terms of the provision of affordable housing for those on low or moderate incomes.

So, what would you old Balmain dudes be doing if WESTS MAGPIES didn't pull you out of the 💩 by paying off your debt.
Y'all going to have a nice shiny new club in the heart of Balmain, to which Balmain won't be putting $1 to... because you have nothing.
Then when you are sitting in the brand-new club having a beer with your old Balmain mates, will you still be giving OLD MAGPIES a hard time [bullying by another name], which YOU SAID in writing on here [and I have produced the evidence to prove that] even though you denied that many times.
So, I'd now like you to produce the evidence [my post] that you say shows I am antisemitic and racist.
It's this type of attitude that has held the club back.

The Wests Tigers are a single entity. Nobody wants a Balmain Leagues Club. Nobody wants a Wests Magpies leagues club. They want a Wests Tigers leagues club.

You have said this before about old Balmin fans yet I can't find one post where any fan says they want anything other than a united Wests Tigers team. Where are these posts you talk of?

As for "bullying" you, I can't find one shred of evidence where you have not been the first to throw stones. And even then, when people engage you in a decent manner, you're very quick to accuse them of something they didn't do. From what I can see, you have taken every opportunity to follow cochise around the forum and have a dig at him, yet you are the one that constantly says you are being bullied?

What would you like people to say to a post as inflammatory as this without it being seen as "bullying" in your eyes? Personally, I think you and a few others on here hide behind accusations of bullying to avoid any criticism, but if you post your opinion here, you have to be open to it being criticised too.

You sit there throwing grenades, yet you get upset when people shoot at you. You said you were in your 70's? Most of the 70 year old blokes I know are tough as old boots. Why are you so sensitive?

Well I respectfully disagree, I’ve always found @BZN to be quite pleasant and very reasonable.

Id love for this new club to be purely Wests Tigers....but we all know that will never happen, which is a shame because it will be another missed opportunity at growing, moving forward, positivity...becoming one!
As a latecomer, I only salute to the flag of the wests tigers.

But I can’t deny Balmain or Western Suburbs their dues either.

They both have a wonderful heritage and I embrace both equally.

Two hearts beat as one!

Geez BZN, you've got some anger issues there mate. Nothing really prompted this that I could see.

HBG deserves to name it whatever they want if it's not part of a pre-existing agreement. But I would love for it to be "Wests Tigers" and become a new hub for the merged club.
He just hates Balmain . Which is sad ! He hates Balmain more than he likes wests tigers . I think he should just float off and follow another sport or the bears … there’s morning here for him anymore

It's been 25 years of Wests Tigers it's just ridiculous after all this time that there is still Balmain vs Magpies crap happening, look at the bitterness it has caused on this forum for as long as I can remember.

All of the junior grades should be Wests Tigers by now, let's face it the foundation clubs are fading into a dim memory.

Our owners are the type of grudge holding, agenda driven old farts that hold us back.

I'd love to see Balmain and HBG sell their respective shares and let one new owner take over.

So much positive growth, financially and structurally is left on the table due to the in-fighting. Even Ashfield and Campbelltown argue...they hate each other. It's not a Balmain v Wests thing anymore. Our owners are dickheads.
