A tale of 2 halves with Balmain playing great footy running into a stiff breeze and finishing the half up 26-Nil.
David Gower , Jarrod Farlow, Ryan Carr & Matt Ryan all playing well with Good solid games from the halves pairing of Nichols & Lazo.Meaney backing up well again but Blake Lazarus was kicking all the conversions for some reason.
BRET started off the second half in the same mode putting on another 2 tries I think to go up 38-0, before things started to go the Sharks way and tries started coming in regular fashion . They were aided by Blake coming off , which at first looked like he did his knee again, for another season ending injury.With his head down slumped in a chair on the sidelines, I was praying it was just a medial tear , but thankfully after the game it's reported as a corked knee.
When in form Matty Ryan came off with a right shoulder injury , a little while later,the Balmain team ended up leaking 20 unanswered points. It frustrating I'm sure for Coach Fletcher that BRET couldn't put then down another 20 points so to improve on their F/A
You never know what you get with the Sharks, but when they losted their best player, playmaker ,Josh Lewis , just before the game stated, they were always going to struggle.
It has also 100% confirmed the Arana is going to North Qld , as he told his teammates last night. He didn't play today , with Brett Lane taking his spot in the centres …even though Arana was at the ground today.
Coach Sheens was at the game today and he did say today that his rates Meaney as a player...we will wait and see if he gets mire that 3 minutes against the Raiders

Good win for BRET, although a shame that it hasn't worked out for Taumata. Geez this bloke has been through some clubs now though. Any word on whether Tame Tupou played or is he still another week away?

Farlow is too good to be wasting away at State Cup level. I would've given him the MOM again after today's effort.
I think he would be a fantastic replacement for Farah during Origin III..

Really solid effort. Meaney appeared to be nursing a knee of thigh problem which impeded his pace somewhat and saw him offloading the ball for klick returns more than usual. He also niggled Ben Pomeroy for being rubbish and copped a few smacks in the chops for his efforts.
As in alot of games the reff let Cronulla get away with alot more once they were down 38 - 0 and they got alot of calls. After Lazarus got studs to the upper shin Fletcher also benched Carr, Gower & Ryan for the remainder of the game.
The tone was set for the first half when Carr obliterated Flanagan in a tackle.
Cuthbertson only looked good when playing as quasi 5/8 for the Sharks and got some nice offloads away.
The scoreline flattered the Sharks and the Tigers face a tough road trip to Melbourne next Saturday.
Tame should definatley be back for that one and Woods should also be on the NYC bench as he only didn''t play yesterday after pulling up a little sore after Fridays training run.
The entire team performed well but as CT said Farlow was a real standout again along with Ryan & Gower for mine

A dominant first half display from the Balmain Ryde-Eastwood Tigers secured a 38-20 win over the Cronulla Sharks at Henson Park on Saturday in the NSW Cup.
It was a tough first 20 minutes with both teams showing resilient defence and it wasn't until the 24th minute that Tigers' lock Jared Farlow crossed out wide after he busted through the defence off a penalty tap 20m out from the Sharks' line & dragged defenders over with him. Halfback Blake Lazarus didn't convert & the score was 4-0.
2 minutes later Tigers' fullback Sean Meaney calmly regathered a well-weighted grubber from five eighth Darren Nicholls to score out wide & Lazarus' conversion took the score to 10-0.
With 10 minutes to go Lazarus crossed under the posts after Balmain second rower Matthew Ryan popped a great ball across the left hand centres for Meaney to sprint down the touchline, draw Sharks' fullback Jamen Mcleod then offload to Lazarus for a clear run to the line. His conversion extended the lead to 16-0.
4 minutes later some enterprising play & quick hands across the backline gave Tigers' winger Sam Latu an open run to the line & obligingly improved the position to score closer to the posts. Lazarus failed to convert & the score was looking ominous at 20-0.
With 3 minutes remaining Latu posted his double in the same position after Meaney was put away down the left hand touchline & in an action replay drew Mcleod then offloaded for Latu to stroll over. Lazarus corrected his line & the conversion gave the Tigers a commanding 26-0 lead at half time.
It only took 2 minutes for the Tigers to trouble the scoreboard upon resumption, with Farlow plunging over next to the posts after the Tigers took advantage of the Sharks' restart going over the sideline on the full & working it upfield. Lazarus converted & the score was now 32-0.
3 minutes later Ryan crossed out wide after the Sharks turned the ball over 20m out from their own line & in that set they worked it left towards thin defence for Ryan to go over unopposed. Lazarus was again on the mark & he extended the lead to 38-0.
Key injuries to both Lazarus &Ryan threw the Tigers into disarray & in the 10th minute Sharks' halfback Scott Porter took full advantage to slice through close to the line & cross near the posts. He didn't convert & the score was 38-4.
With 17 minutes to go Sharks' replacement Herman Retzlaff crashed over out wide from close range. Porter's conversion took the score to 38-10.
10 minutes later Sharks' five eighth Matthew Wright ended a great movement crossing out wide that started with a 30m penalty kick & Porter couldn't convert to close the gap to 38-14.
Right on full time the Sharks scored a consolation try through winger Tyler Jordan, who crossed in the left hand corner after they made huge metres up the middle then kept the ball alive before spotting an opening out wide & a high floating pass gave Jordan his opportunity. Porter's conversion gave the Sharks some respectability & at full time the Tigers were convincing 38-20 winners.
While the Sharks did most of the scoring in the second half, the dynamic intensity of the Tigers' first half attack & solid defence close to the line laid the groundwork for the win & virtually ensured the 2 points were always going home with the Tigers.
Next week the Tigers will need every bit of that creative spark & tough defence when they go on the ultimate road trip & travel to Olympic Park in Melbourne to take on the challenge from the Melbourne Storm on Saturday 19 June commencing at 2pm. Don't miss a minute of the action!
