Balmain set to retain stake in Wests Tigers as deadline extended

Wests Magpies are set to honour a pact made with Balmain when they merged in 2000 by agreeing to a deal that would enable their fellow foundation club to maintain a stake in Wests Tigers.

With the deadline for cash-strapped Balmain to repay a $5.4 million loan to the NRL due to expire on Thursday, there have been doubts over the future of one of the game's oldest and most famous clubs but Fairfax Media has been told Wests will not allow them to die and is prepared to offer the Leichhardt-based Tigers a 25 per cent stake in the joint venture.

Negotiations between the two clubs are continuing and are set to go past the March 31 deadline but it is understood they are close to reaching an agreement that would result in half of Balmain's debt being retired and the 116-year-old club having a further 10 years to repay the rest.

In return, the Wests Group - headed by the powerful Wests Ashfield Leagues Club - would take control of the Wests Tigers board by appointing five of the nine directors.

Balmain would have two seats on the board and there would also be two independent directors.
Under the terms of the NRL licence agreement for Wests Tigers, the Magpies have the option of buying Balmain's 50 per cent stake in the joint venture if the Tigers can't meet Thursday's deadline.

However, it is believed Balmain will not only retain a 25 per cent stake but also have an opportunity to buy back the other 25 per cent if they get back on their feet.

Such a move would be in the spirit of the original joint venture agreement between the two clubs after they rebelled against attempts to merge Balmain with Parramatta to form the Parramatta Tigers and Wests with Canterbury to become the Western Bulldogs.

Despite being separated geographically, Balmain and Wests assured their survival when the NRL reduced the number of teams to 14 in 2000 by taking advantage of an $8 million merger incentive and becoming the Wests Tigers.

In doing so, the boards of both clubs decided that if one got into difficulty the other would help them out and Wests have been honouring that commitment since the closure of Balmain Leagues Club at Rozelle six years ago left the Tigers unable to play their way.

It is understood the NRL is so convinced that the two clubs will reach agreement on a new deal that they have extended the deadline for the $5.4 million debt to be paid.

Wests Ashfield chief executive Simon Cook confirmed that March 31 was not being treated as a red-letter day for the future of the joint venture.

Cook told Fairfax Media negotiations would continue between the Wests Tigers' three stakeholders - Balmain, Wests and the NRL - well beyond Thursday.

"I wouldn't be too hung up on the date," he said. "The talks are progressing and there won't be anything finalised on March 31st."

Cook said despite rumours that old Magpies diehards had a petition demanding for the club to rename itself the Western Suburbs Magpies he was yet to see it.

Regardless of the ownership structure, Cook made it clear that the NRL club's name would remain Wests Tigers and he said there would be continued and considered discussion about the future of the Wests-Balmain alliance.

"We never have - and never will be - a guillotine organisation that just chops something off without giving a matter due consideration and exploring all options," Cook said.

Balmain finance committee chairman James Myatt said the discussions had been constructive and would continue.

"There are ongoing discussions and all parties are engaged," Myatt said."It would be premature to put a position forward on what shape they may take. We're in the negotiation phase and I don't want to prejudice anything that's been discussed."

Makes me proud to be a fan reading that.

We have always been viewed as a divided club.

Maybe this is a line in the sand moment.

As an old Balmain fan this gesture if true has increased my respect and gratitude of Wests tenfold. I hope the deal works out and it actually brings our club closer together.

This is all nice and fluffy but are Balmain going to still add financially to the club each year,The club needs money to compete in this competition and has been hamstrung by this entire fiasco for years ..I would of preferred a sale to a private entity to inject useable funds to move the club forward …O well this club will just struggle like forever!

Lot of water to pass under the bridge yet…I did find this interesting...Brent read is taking some licence I think..

They would need to change the Governance Structure for this to happen...The NRL want independents on Boards...the current one states the Chair must be independent...

It's a positive move by Wests Ashfield....

Good story. Cook has been pretty consistent and straightforward when he's been quoted in his support for the status quo. It's only been nevilles with no current position who have fanned the flames. Cook perfectly sums up the underlying nature of Wests Tigers in terms of the relationship between the two component parts.

If I owned 75% of an organisation and I had to stump up with 75% of the yearly running costs than I think I'd want to have the majority say in how it was run. The current board with 3independents was a good structure for a 50/50 JV but that will no longer be the set up according to this proposal.
I like this deal in many ways except Balmain are still going to owe the NRL $2.7million plus need to meet 25% of the ongoing costs of the WT each year. If they don't have the resources to pay for this than this saga is going to continue for many more years.

Noble intentions but in reality Balmain have to become financially sound on a permanent basis to have any hope in paying off loans or buying back stakes in a football club.

Sorry I fail to see the positives in this

Tell me where Balmain are going to find the money /finances to repay this debt in 10 years time , 20 years time or a hundred years time

A step backwards in my opinion , I'll be honest this is the first step towards the complete and total demise of the Wests Tigers

When we are getting relocated /renamed /remodelled remember this day if this is true

Good on the Magpies.
Hopefully they finally get the respect they deserve from some
But still this drags on like a burden around ones neck

My biggest point in all this is how originally Balmain saved the magpies and that should not be forgotten. If the magpies did the same in return that is a special thing. Very classy and honourable.

Why why why while I think the gesture from my magpies is great my concern is where does Balmain find the money to repay there dept I love the Wests Tigers but I think someone should have bought the Balmain club out

I can't see how this helps WTs at all, as far as I can see Balmain still have no money.
Just more years of uncertainty, (actually not only has no money, but still owes half their debt) in
Would rather see some Person/Corporation bring some extra money into the club.
It all sounds nice and cosy, but I can't see any real upside for the Club

The only ones that will benefit from this are the supporters who threatened to walk away if Balmain ceased involvement. Don't see where the JV benefits having a co-owner who has no money other than make some people feel warm and fuzzy that Balmain are still alive, even if it is in name only.

GNR,I do feel warm and fuzzy that the name Balmain still exists in the JV,even if they are struggling and on the ropes financially…it is the only reason that I follow the Wests Tigers,I love the idea that the 2 foundation clubs united to give birth to our fantastic club...
I was a member of Balmain for years and now Iam proud to be a member of the Wests Tigers....For the much younger ones they will learn through history how two proud foundation clubs formed this club,as it should be.....

Good God, this drags on for another decade? I can see why Wests would take this option. They buy the debt out, get control and leave a lifeline for Balmain to purchase the debt back later on if they ever become solvent again and Wests go back to sharing the operating costs rather than paying full fare. It's also a rather noble proposal put forward by the Wests Group to not allow Balmain to die out.

I was a Balmain boy through and through, but I'm kind of hoping that the Tigers self sabotage this just so Wests will buy out in full and the whole sorry saga is put to bed and Wests Tigers can move on without this crap hanging over it's head. WT has enough issues without worrying about the shareholders problems as well.
