THE Tigers are on the lookout for a new den, with Balmain Leagues Club on the verge of being demolished to make way for a new development that includes an underground train station.
The State Government wants to take possession of the three-acre Victoria Rd site on April 1 to begin construction of Rozelle Station on its proposed CBD Metrolink.
With Leichhardt Council having approved a multi-million-dollar residential and commercial development to replace the current building, Tigers directors have agreed to comply in exchange for a healthy compensation package. The club's 23,500 members are expected to be informed by mail this week.
It's anticipated both the train station and new club will take four years to build, but the wait will be worthwhile for members who have had to contend with a small venue and out-dated parking lot for far too long.
The Tigers have found two temporary dens while works are being carried out - Five Dock Bowling Club and the Sydney Markets Club at Flemington. Both premises will receive considerable facelifts when the Tigers move in. Although the leagues club gives a $1.5 million grant to the Wests Tigers, the joint venture is not expected to be short-changed because the public compensation will cover trading losses.
All that can scuttle it is a backflip from the Labor Government, whose premier Kristina Keneally is expected to deliver after promising the Metrolink when she was the state's Planning Minister.
**Great to see things starting. A club with a train station down stairs, how good is that?**
