THE Tigers are on the lookout for a new den, with Balmain Leagues Club on the verge of being demolished to make way for a new development that includes an underground train station.
The State Government wants to take possession of the three-acre Victoria Rd site on April 1 to begin construction of Rozelle Station on its proposed CBD Metrolink.

With Leichhardt Council having approved a multi-million-dollar residential and commercial development to replace the current building, Tigers directors have agreed to comply in exchange for a healthy compensation package. The club's 23,500 members are expected to be informed by mail this week.

It's anticipated both the train station and new club will take four years to build, but the wait will be worthwhile for members who have had to contend with a small venue and out-dated parking lot for far too long.

The Tigers have found two temporary dens while works are being carried out - Five Dock Bowling Club and the Sydney Markets Club at Flemington. Both premises will receive considerable facelifts when the Tigers move in. Although the leagues club gives a $1.5 million grant to the Wests Tigers, the joint venture is not expected to be short-changed because the public compensation will cover trading losses.

All that can scuttle it is a backflip from the Labor Government, whose premier Kristina Keneally is expected to deliver after promising the Metrolink when she was the state's Planning Minister.

**Great to see things starting. A club with a train station down stairs, how good is that?**

Great news that they are going to finally get this sorted out and start development, however the $1.5million grant quoted is grossly overstated and would be something closer to $500,000 due to the poor financial status of the Tigers club over the past few years. Hopefully with the new club though we will start to see them tip more cash into WT and hopefully it may end up being closer to that falsely reported $1.5million once they re-open and get the coffers back up.

Wouldn't it make sense to actually have a replacement club in Balmain!!!???

Seeing most of the people that go there live with a few minutes of there! I certainly couldn't be bothered going to five dock or even further west when there are so many pubs to choose from in the area here.

Must have been a lack of suitable premises. Whats the old APIA club down by the river near LO now?

But isn't the point of a club to serve its local community? And by moving to a diffrerent community wouldn't it fail to achieve this?

Don't get me wrong i think its great that the club is getting the makeover, but 4 years without a club in balmain seems like a lot.

And granted there aren't a lot of large clubs in the Balmain area but surely they could find somthing a little closer…

That is the function centre La Montage

Which i'm pretty sure is owned by Marconi and couldn't see it being used by Balmain..

Five Dock Bowling Club would be great!!! Nice and close to my place!! Booyaaahhhhhhhh

It isn't that far mate… jeas... it's 3 or 4 km away max

Balmain Bowling Club would make more sense no?

And 4 years is a long time IMO. If the 160 storey building in Dubai took 6 years, 4 years seems like a stretched out project. But ….. good things come to those who wait.

Oh, and would Balmain Leagues members be allowed into Wests Leagues at Ashfield? I don't know what the current situation is, but surely some agreement between the two should be established? I live in Haberfield so it's pretty much equidistant to both clubs.

Im sure they can sign in as a visitor as long as theyre not withing the 5km radius

Balmain Bowling may be very happy with their club atm and what nothing to do with anyone else, which I guess is their right.

its good that the leagues club is going to be developed.
I know they both are a bit small, but habberfield & drummoyne rowers are close, to leichardtt oval.
would North Ryde RSL be too far way to go to for after match presentations??

yeah i was talking to a couple of friends today and they said balmain bowling club is pretty small and happy with the way they are at the moment. also, one of them said balmain leagues gets you into wests ashfield. imo it'd make a whole lot of sense to allow the balmain leagues members access to wests ashfield as normal members even if theyre inside the 5km radius. but again, it depends on whether wests ashfield is happy with that decision.

Rozelle sample design - Design team 2
Team 2 saw the metro providing an opportunity to overcome the impact of Victoria Road and enhance the link between the communities of Balmain and Rozelle. The sample design consists of two new iconic public spaces and a generous below ground retail concourse connecting the station entrances under the road. The two protected gullies form a forecourt to the two churches and create a new tree filled entry into Balmain.

Rozelle station sample designs - Design team 2
Enclosed by the spectacular stone cuttings, the western ravine is filled with a sheet of reflective water whilst the eastern ravine has a simple grass lawn. These spaces lead into the underground retail precinct under Victoria Road, which connects to the main station building - an orange-hued structure that is a reference to the Balmain Tigers.

On the opposite side of Victoria Road, a tiger orange glass metro entrance box defines the street corner and entry into a more pedestrian friendly tree lined neighbourhood. Technologically advanced environmental systems support the design such as solar glass, water harvesting and reuse, automated bicycle storage and natural ventilation and lighting.

The Sydney Metro's future is in doubt with the NSW government announcing it has stopped acquiring properties in the Rozelle area until it has made a final decision on the project.
>
NSW Premier Kristina Keneally says a decision on the future of Sydney's metro rail network will be announced late in February only after a proper cabinet and budget committee process.
>
Ms Keneally says this will provide clarity and certainty for businesses in the area.
>
The blueprint for the controversial $5.3 million CBD project was due to be announced in November as part of then premier Nathan Rees' $180 million transport plan, but was put off as the new premier reviewed the situation.
>
The Sydney Metro is being considered as part of an overall and broader approach to land use and transport planning, Ms Keneally said in a statement on Tuesday.
>
"This is about a fully integrated vision of land use and transport planning for the future and for the people of NSW," Ms Keneally said.
>
"We are committed to a metro network for Sydney, but the plan that we put to the people has to meet the needs of where commuters live and work, by combining land use and transport planning."

Dont worry….its not the Tele.

Dunno why another light rail system is needed for this area when one already exists, along with plenty of buses.

As much as I think it's a dumb idea it's not a light rail and the existing light rail goes to Lilyfield not Rozelle. I do agree there is a lot of duplication around Pyrmont.

They should focus on other areas …there are plenty in Sydney crying out for more transport, however thats not really the issue here, Im wondering how this apparent backflip from the govt yet again will affect the redevelopment
