Beau Ryan at Lock?

I noticed a few people talking about this on the Utai thread as an option Sheens might use during games in 2012\. I know it already happened in 2011 during a couple games
not trying to 'Sheens bash' because he has done a good job the last two seasons getting us into the top 4, but its things like playing Beau Ryan at lock that will never have him in the same stature as Bennett
you would never see Bennett playing an 85kg winger in the forwards
The sad part is, with Sheens this kind of thing doesn't surprize you. Well doesn't surprize me anyway

Yeah its a funny one isn't it - I remember Beau playing in the forwards for a period in a game this year (cant remember which one) and he really had a go.

But if the theory is you just want a guy that will tackle and tackle and tackle isn't that Fultons role?

And also weren't we looking for bulk up front in 2012 even to the point of benching Heighnington?
 
I'm not going to criticise Ryan here, I know its not his decision. I know he has the heart of a lion who gives you everything he's got, but Sheens lacks common sense at times. What other coach consistantly has a winger on the bench. Theres no valid explanation to it
 
We'll it not like Ryan is much SMALLER than Heighington…. is it? Hmm....

good post GNR. i have a lot of respect for the way that ryan had a really good go of it when sheens shoved him in the forwards last yr. whilst he didnt do as bad as i thought, realistically if sheens puts him there again ryan will be shown to be out of his depth. but as GNR said, not a go at ryan, i love his effort, but he's a winger.

sometimes it seems to me like sheens does these things to be different to all the other coaches, as though he wants to be known as an innovator or something. but i dunno, im really just trying to find an explanation for some of the decisions he makes…
 
If we're going to be moving a back to the back row it'd have to be Ayshford. He's the biggest and probably slowest, which would then create an opportunity for Reddy to play in the centres.
BUT if its not broken, please for the love of god don't try to fix it Mr Sheens.
 
Mostly agree with Fraze, Ryan has an amazing passion for the Tigers and would play in the front row if he was told. I think we may find Reddy as our utility off the bench next year. Ayshford was just too good in the centres last year. He may play a few minutes in the back row, but i think we'll see Reddy playing in the backs and forwards next year.

Before we bag Sheens for that move with Beau in the forwards if you remember Beau was pretty quiet first few weeks after injury Sheens put him in the forwards he got more involved and his game really turned around from there

Maybe by sticking him in the forwards he knew that Beau would have to get more involved and would build his confidence up as he missed a fair while due to the groin

Just another theory

But when we have ;Liam Fulton in the form he was in at the back end of the season making 40 plus tackles with 96+% completion rate on those tackles he will be the lock in 2012
 
I must admit it would be great to have a big man play with as much passion as Beau did when he moved into the forwards for those couple of games this year. Although definately not his position at lock he put in a huge effort.
 
Beau gives everything as a player and could never be faulted for effort however i have to agree with the majority of posters he is not and never will be the right answer in the forwards.tim please let him stay where he belongs we have an excellent pack and do not need beau to weaken it
 
Beau Ryan was used in the forwards to make way for the fresh bench utility in the late stages of the game….. Giving the fresh man the ability to test tired players, but keeping a mobile, defensive player on the park. Sureing up the middle of the ruck from lazy defenders inability to 'shut the gate' which can occur late in the game. (an area in which Bryce Gibbs will be sorely missed, but that's another topic)
This is not uncommon and smart coaching as far as I'm concerned

there are two ways to look at it, its either a genuis move or a dumb move - i say sheens is not stoopid, but he must have the knowledge to know that beau ryan will be no game breaker from lock, its not natural, it goes against the laws of the universe, do other top coaches, employ such tactics and does it work. I argue, that it does work, because we should have been premiers two years in a row but the gods abandonded us. Put it this way - we will never understand Sheens, and I'm content to live with that for the time being - because at the moment we are a team living on the edge - and thats how life should be lived.
 
It wont be lock it maybe 2nd row but these days lock plays tight, ie. in with the props & hooker. Ashfords defence it only average at best. Good for a centre but not in Heinys or Fults' class.
 
Sheens in Bennetts Class??? Really, which class is that???
I also remember Bennett NOT running Gasnier at Utai all night at the end of the season….
When it worked so well the 1st time we played them this year.
Not sure why.... But he got past him everytime he went at him, Surely even an U7''s coach
could see such opportunity.
As for Beau at Lock.... I guess we'll wait and see, He has a heart of a clydesdale... A few more kg's and anything is possible!!

I think we'll see Ryan And Tuqiri the starting wingers in round 1 with Utai on the bench. I like the idea of Utai coming on as an impact backrower but I'd rather Ryan to defend tight than Utai. Ryan could play back row in defence with his supreme fitness and then swap with Utai when we're attacking. Just a thought

I don't think he's in Bennetts class, I never said he was. It was more aimed at the people who think he's a better coach then Bennett
