Beau Ryan love hate

I didn't rate him to be honest. Our right side defense close to our line was terrible.

Then in comes Ayshford. Almost instantly the defense improved. Beau had no faith in Collis, he does in Blake.
That said I still think he was only average. He always tried hard and probably lacked opportunity with the ball.

Now onto fullback. Yes he has been solid, but I'm not over the moon with him there like most people seem to be.
He is reliable and safe in defense but I still think he lacks in attack.

His kick returns are strong and straight which does help in the momentum in the start of our sets and his dummy half work is admirable (again straight and hard), but he just doesn't look to have much in his game apart from that (straight and hard).

I dont think I've ever seen him step a bloke or setup a support player with a good long or short ball. I dont expect to see him chiming into our backline like a 2nd 5/8 as most fullback do these days. Maybe that will come with time but I doubt it.

I'm happy to have him there but he's not the ideal fullback for the Tigers. If we could have Beau Ryans defensive game and Tim Moltzens ball playing ability then we'd have the ideal fullback. I will admit though that I'd prefer Ryan over Moltzen for fullback.

Oh and dont forget Ryan new he had to lift his game as soon as we signed Tuquiri. He's been playing for a spot in the starting side every week this year.

For now though I can live with that

Ryan isn't a ball playing fullback, and IMO with Benji and Farah running the show he doesn't need to be.

What I have noticed in the last few weeks is that he's often trailing one of the forwards, ready for an offload. I have no doubt that this will continue to improve.

I'm over the moon with him there, he's safe and his kick returns are excellent. The rest will come in due time.

Thats right Hybrid he's not a ball playing fullback and his not elusive on his feet either. Thats why I dont consider him an ideal fullback this day and age.

Even with Benji and Farah I'd like another ball player at fullback. A big part of why I'd like to see Taumata or Lazarus get a run there. Maybe this is what the next marquee player should be. Maybe Mullaney if he can bulk up a bit.
I'd keep Lote on the wing, Beau and Tnt as the wingers.

Still love Ryans attitude and security at fullback though.

Ive always wanted to see him play fullback, i always thought he was wasted on the wing. When hodgo left i think i recall him mentioning something about Beau Ryan should get a crack.. only if we had listened earlier

My dislike came from exactly the same moment in time I realised Moltzen was not a fullbacks left teste.

Cowboys game in Townsville 2009

The change from the player who allowed such a easy try to be scored by not putting his body in the line to the guy we saw as the last line of defence at the SFS this past Friday night.

The turnaround mirrors my change of view of Beaus game. Perhaps it was always there and I din't see it

My thoughts exactly.

Exactly my thoughts too.

I thought he was good on the wing last year but before that I wasnt convinced, I knew he was a real goer but I saw him as another Fitzhenry like player.

He has been great this year at fullback, Ive lost count how many try savers he has come up with this season. Not only on Andrew Ryan but there was another tackle I remember in the first half against Canberra where I still believe if he didnt make that tackle, we wouldve lost that game. One thing Ive noticed is he seems a lot stronger this year as well.

Beau has always had ability but his attitude is a million times better these days. In the past he would lose concentration and do dumb things. He's really eliminated the mistakes form his game.

I think Beau's confidence grew with playing time, he has always had the ability but it just had to come with games under his belt

Love his attitude - he is so passionate and is often the first to congratulate the tryscorer.
I also like the way he returns the ball from the kick.
Didn't show much on the wing but was no worse than some others.

For starters I was never a hater of Beau. I thought he was solid and did his job. With blokes who haven't played much FG that is always a good sign. I think the improvement in him is just natural progression. The more games you play, the better you will get. He looks a bit bigger and stronger. Playing at fullback is good from as well. Its easy for a busy player to get involved.
