Ben Barba stood down

Something stinks about this story. If he has some mental issues, why was he suspended rather than given a leave of absence? Greenburg said they had considered tearing up his contract…

initially that is what i thought as well , why suspend him maybe it was the action required to force Barba's hand and get the help he needs if that was Greenbourg intentions then fair play to him ,for taking a player's welfare 1st before footy … but if he wasn't a big name player .... rest assured he would of been sacked as so many have in the past etc. Tilse , Kelly ... so some clubs will play the nice guy when it's convenient for them.
I also agree with innsaneink in regards with having to still work when they issues like Barba have , how many people can have the luxury of stopping work and getting help for there problems , i know if i had these problems how would i feed my kids and pay my mortgage etc.

Its all a tactical move, from the club, A pillow to soften the blow when the legal accusations come out so it looks like he had mental issues

Yeah you might be right , who knows ? Bulldogs have always been a dodgy club in my eyes , you just hope for the sake of League Greenburg is doing the right thing and not hiding something behind the scenes.

Sounds like it was mainly a gambling problem that caused this and the separation with his partner. A few months ago there was an excerpt from Hindmarsh's biography detailing his problems with gambling and the toll it took on his family and friends. Fortunately Hindmarsh was able to overcome it, i hope Barba can do the same.

Gambling seems to be a big problem with young players in the NRL, they suddenly see themselves getting a huge paycheck while they look for avenues to entertain themselves such as the pokies, the tab, etc. Would be an idea for the NRL to give financial advice to these young guys.

The scariest thing is we hear all these stories about these players who have gambling issues

The temptation for these guys to make a small mistake in a game for financial gain must be very tempting , especially if you are going down the gurgler

I'm not really convinced about that TBH. If he has a gambling problem then they would just get him counselling without going to the extreme measure of standing him down. Unless he is getting on the TAB website in the sheds at halftime during the Dogs games I can't really see how the gambling side of it would be so detrimental to his football and why the Dogs would be so concerned with it?

IMO there is more to this story but whether we will ever find out remains to be seen….a lot of things seem to get swept under the carpet in sport these days in the interests of not tarnishing a club or code.

Unbelievable

The new NRL CEO has just mistaken Ben Barba for Benji Marshall

Who hired this nugget ??
