Ben Barba stood down

I hope he gets the sack and we pick him up. Would be the best pick up for the club ever we can play him at fullback with teddy on the wing. Spine looking like

1\. Barba
6\. Marshall
7\. Brooks/Miller
9\. Farah

Dare we dream?

Well being in an industry that earns its money from gambling and booze is not really conducive with rehab is it. Every where he goes are bookies odds, ads for Tooheys so I think it's the best way, just remove yourself from it all

Maybe the NRL should remove itself from it all.

" The decision to suspend Ben indefinitely comes after the Club was informed of a number of behavioral issues."

Apparently he is barking mad!

'Ben Barba is ill and he needs help': Bulldogs poster boy may be out of game for six months

The NRL’s 2012 player of the year Ben Barba won’t play in the Bulldogs opening round clash against North Queensland and his long term future is uncertain after being stood down over behavioural issues relating to a break-up with his long time partner.

Canterbury chief executive Todd Greenberg would not put a time frame on when Barba was expected to resume playing, telling a press conference: ‘‘It could be six weeks, it could be six months’’.

Fairfax Media understand the Bulldogs are helping Barba to overcome gambling and alcohol issues.

Greenberg refused to speculate on the exact nature of the problems but he said Barba needed to deal with them or the club would consider sterner action.

‘‘By terminating his contract it doesn’t help him,’’ Greenberg said. ‘‘What we are trying to do is put support services around him and people around him to help him individually off the field.

‘‘That is the sort of club we are, we help ours when they need it, but he needs to take a big step up here and if he doesn’t take that step up he won’t play.

‘‘If he helps himself he will be a Bulldogs player for a long time but he needs to help himself.’’

Barba’s absence will be a big loss for Canterbury but Greenberg said his long term welfare was more important.

‘‘Ben Barba is ill and he needs help,’’ Greenberg said. ‘‘We thought we had a duty of care.

‘‘He won’t be playing when we open the season. We have stood down the Dally M player of the year, the pin-up boy of the game.

‘‘Ben’s at a point where I think football is the furthest thing from his mind.

The National Rugby League supported the Bulldogs' actions on Monday.

“The club [Bulldogs] has kept the NRL fully briefed on the matter and it is clear that this is a case of everyone wanting to put Ben’s interests first,” NRL CEO Dave Smith, said on Monday.

"This appears to be a challenging set of circumstances for a young man in the public spotlight and it is a time for us all to give him and the club some room to find the best way forward.

Barba said in a statement released by the Bulldogs: "Today is a very difficult day for me as I feel I've let my family, children, club and supporters down. My issues relate to seeking help for personal issues that I face day to day.

“I'm incredibly sad to be stepping aside as I've been so blessed with what's happened to me over the past few years, but I feel as though I would be wearing a mask if I didn't confront the matters I've been dealing with until now.

“I feel it is best to deal with these problems front on and I believe that by doing so this will make me a better person and player in the future.

“This will be a step by step process for me and whilst I hope to return to football soon, I hope that through this next period you can respect my privacy so that sooner rather than later I can return to playing rugby league as best I can.

“When I do, I hope that everybody sees a better person.”

Barba’s manager Gavin Orr maintained that the suspension could be lifted within weeks. He said he and Barba supported the club’s actions.

‘‘He’s identified that he’s struggling with a few issues with his family,’’ Orr said. ‘‘He wants a bit of private time to deal with those issues. I hope he’ll be back in a week or two.

‘‘He doesn’t want to let anyone down. That’s the big thing.

‘‘There’s just some personal issues between him and his family that he needs to address. He’s going to be working hard over the next few weeks to address them.

‘‘He just wants some personal time at the moment.’’

Just cause one person can deal with A PARTICULAR problem, doesnt mean another can as succesfully, assuming the problems are the same....we dont know so no point even speculating

They did have in the story that gambling was one of the issues.
Also in late 2011 before his big rise I seen him in Wenty TAB. His missus and kids were outside and he would have been in there for a good hour. I know cause I was in there with him. That doesn't mean it was an issue but it certainly pointing that way. Gambling is a major issue and it is destroying families. you can be the nicest guy in the world but when you get in that web it's very hard to get out. And with the money he was getting would have made it a lot worse. If it is that then Greenberg is a very smart person because he needs to get away from the game altogether. There is no cheating it. NRL is surrounded by this and it needs to stop.

You miss my point…..people can have the same problems, but how each individual copes and deals with them can be very different

Alexaki said he knew someone with a similar problem but he didnt stop work- the solution for that dudes prob and barbas can be very very different

Some people HAVE to keep working when dealing with probs, Baraba seems to be lucky he has an understanding employer and also can afford to take time off

I agree Greenberd & the Dogs appear to have handled this very well, going by what we know ....Greenberg is the best CEO in the comp imo

If he plays with his unresolved issues they will probably affect his game. If his form is poor he will be copping it from all the journos and experts, heaping more on him when he is probably at his limit now. His mental health and well being should be priority number 1.

Blah blah just shows the young generation are a bunch of drama queens, selfish spoilt brats, MAN up they all play the victim depressed, &$;? Who isnt these days

Something stinks about this story. If he has some mental issues, why was he suspended rather than given a leave of absence? Greenburg said they had considered tearing up his contract…

Yea, but the spotlight that he is under can be extremely bright when trying to deal with mental demons. We could only try to imagine the highs he goes through after a season he had last year, its when these highs get stale, drop off or dull is when people with mental illness hit rock bottom. Throw in a lot of spare time, youth, a busted up relationship and a genetic allergic disfunction to alcohol and he is prone to a catastrophic life threatening combination.

Sorry Justo ,Happy's not always a mental giant . Genetic Allergic disfunction to alcohol ???

Any chance I can use that next time the Missus is kicking my butt for coming home under the weather

Then again better not , if I tried to say that drunk she drop me like a bad habit and give me hell for swearing at her 😱pen_mouth:

Probably got to the stage where he was late to training or something along those lines or was absent from home and the club found out etc etc I have a feeling it will all be speculation for a long time.

Totally right Ink

If its true about losing his kids in the break up

I'd be inconsolable if I lost my kids in a break up

Barba's off-field woes take their toll

By Steve Jancetic AAP Mon, Feb 25, 2013 - 7:10 PM

It wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back, but it was the final indicator that Ben Barba's head space wasn't prepared for an NRL season.

Taking part in his one and only trial match for the Bulldogs in Goulburn last Saturday night, Barba told one of the team's trainers he wanted to come off because he wasn't really interested in playing.

It was a poignant moment.

For all his off-field issues, the rugby league field had always been a place of solace for Barba, a chance for him to escape the troubles of his private life.

Never was this more evident that with his stunning hat-trick in the All Stars match earlier this month, a performance which many believed was a portent to an imminent State of Origin call-up for Queensland.

That dream now appears in tatters, with Barba to seek help for a multitude of behavioural issues stemming from the breakdown in his relationship with Ainslie Currie, the mother of his two children.

He was in tears on Sunday as he met with Bulldogs coach Des Hasler and chief executive Todd Greenberg, who had been aware of Barba's troubles for some time.

"It became quite serious to me over this weekend," Greenberg said.

"We've been talking to him a lot … over the last 24-48 hours it became significant enough for me to take the action.

"(It was) not so much an incident, just a manifestation of a lot of issues that have been in his life over a period of time.

"This is not one issue - this is a range of different issues that stem from the breakdown in a family and a personal relationship."

The Bulldogs have invested many hours in dealing with Barba's emotional shortcomings over the years.

A junior star, Barba once stunned Bulldogs officials during an under-20s match when he was so upset with a decision he walked off the field midway through a competition game.

There have been any number of rumours of incidents with teammates, the latest being an allegation by the Nine Network of an altercation with fellow squad member Tim Browne at training last week.

Greenberg said Barba wanted none of the attention his 2012 heroics delivered, but whether he liked it or not, he was now one of the NRL's poster boys.

Greenberg denied any of Barba's actions had warranted the attention of police, and related to breaches of club policy.

Rather, this had all the hallmarks of a pre-emptive strike.

"Some (breaches) are small, some are things that you do day to day in the club's operations and others you take a dimmer view of," Greenberg said.

"Certainly over the last week or so I've seen some signs that worry me and we need to make sure we got on the front foot with him to ensure we got him some help now before this came to something that was more drastic.

"We talked a lot yesterday about good decision making.

"Young footballers get to points of their careers where they make poor decisions - Ben's made a number of poor decisions in recent times and he needs to start making good decisions to get back on the football field.

"That's been explained to him in no uncertain terms."

Whatever the go is, I wish the media would just give the bloke his space and let him sort it out. It all comes out in the wash in the end.

I tend to agree with you, just seems a bit odd the way it has panned out (the timing of it considering the ACC "investigations" into certain issues in the game etc).
As you said, why wasn't he just given time off without a suspension from the Dogs.

I feel for the poor bloke but the Media will say we have a job to do, they dont give a Rats they just want to sell Papers & get the story before the other T.V networks.

Wouldn't be the first time someone has suddenly got a high profile, got the huge inflated ego to go with it and found themselves unable to handle fame and it's trappings.

tbh.. i think barba should come out and give a pressie answering every q. the media throws at him.. let it out once and for alll, then the media will leave you alone. the less you say, the more the media will speculate.
