Blues drop Benji Marshall from squad for Super Rugby clash with South Africa’s Bulls

HIGH-profile recruit Benji Marshall has been left out of the Blues' match-day squad for the Super Rugby clash against the Bulls while experienced campaigners Keven Mealamu and Tony Woodcock will return to the starting line-up.

An unchanged backline means two youngsters, five-eighth Simon Hickey and teenage winger Tevita Li, are retained for the clash in Pretoria on Sunday morning (AEDT) after impressive performances in their 35-24 win over the Crusaders last weekend.

Kirwan has opted for Chris Noakes ahead of Marshall among the reserves, saying Noakes' tactical kicking could be crucial at altitude.

He said rugby league convert Marshall was obviously disappointed at the decision.

“We've got a program for Benji and I've said I'm not going to rush it and it's really important that we slowly bring him into the game,” he said.

Marshall made his Super Rugby debut off the bench at fullback in the season-opening loss to the Highlanders.

However, the former Kiwis rugby league skipper was not used against the Crusaders, when he was also on the bench covering fullback and five-eighth.

Hooker Mealamu and loosehead prop Tony Woodcock were eased into the new season, with each getting 30 minutes off the bench against the Crusaders.

The two All Blacks centurions will form an all-Test front row with Charlie Faumuina against the Bulls.

Coach Sir John Kirwan says the scrum will be an important part of the game and the Blues need to be competitive if not dominant there.

There is one other change in the run-on side with lock Liaki Moli in for rookie Patrick Tuipulotu.

While Tuipulotu performed well against the Crusaders, Kirwan wanted to “make sure we protect him a wee bit” by having him come off the bench.

Blues: Charles Piutau, Frank Halai, George Moala, Jackson Willison, Tevita Li, Simon Hickey, Piri Weepu, Peter Saili, Luke Braid (capt), Steven Luatua, Tom Donnelly, Liaki Moli, Charlie Faumuina, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock. Reserves: James Parsons, Sam Prattley, Angus Ta'avao, Patrick Tuipulotu, Brendon O'Connor, Bryn Hall, Chris Noakes, Pita Ahki.

He's new to the game and he has a lot to learn. He'll work his way back.

He's 29 and will never make the all blacks squad, if he does though, hats off to him, I'll never repost on here again, after 2012 Marshall hasn't and will never be the same. Thankful for one thing only, his departure. Now if only Blair and Anasta would follow suit.

I hope you're right Willow. I'd like to see him do well, bur he's got to get his head right.

If this kick in the guts doesn't spur him on to give it everything he's got, nothing will.

Wow! How his going to react will make or break him.His attitude and ego broke him in league but he was allowed too?what will he do in the lonely land of Union ?

i dont buy all this BS about his 'ego'

he turned down 700k from us and he SURE AS HELL did not get more than that at the blues to get benched round 1 and dropped round 3.

i think he's a genuine guy, and the whole team went to crap as did his method of playing. With no halfback, no forward pack and teams getting used to his style of play he was always going to struggle. There were still glimpses of his brilliance, watch Tigers vs Souths, Storm or Dragons. And yes he was poor, im the first to admit that but I dont think it was because he was arrogant or any of that. It simply wasn't working for him, he didnt want to play against the club and decided a fresh start would help his career out.

Benji did loads of great things at the club but even with out that gaining pleasure from others failure is not a good trait.
Mind you playing 2 sports at such a high level is a nice achievement that many have dreamed about!

I don't care what sport he is playing, League, Union, Soccer, Basketball.

He has lost the thing that made him great, speed/agility/step off the mark. Same things happens with great soccer strikers that suddenly stop scoring goals because they have lost a half yard.

Once that is gone he comes right back to the pack. Great memories with Benji however he was a fading force back in 2012 and I don't see things getting any better for him in the future no matter what sport he plays.

I'm no shrinking violet but I'm glad this forum isn't the swearfest some other forums are.

Yep. All the talk about ego is in my opinion definitely not true. Benji was always a good guy. The problem was he has lost some of the zip that he had and he didn't compensate for that loss via playing more solid footy.

the coach will have Benji in the team, when the coach thinks he is ready.
the coach thinks he is not ready, yet, and therefore not being picked..
Benji will be there, sometime during the year.

Where's Tauber?. Where's the article saying "the Coach has embarrassed Benji by leaving him out"etc.
