Benji confident of taking on Eels

Suspect we will see Tui into 5/8 if Benji is out. It would be the least disruptive change and allow team continuity.

Gamble to play 5/8 til the 60th min, get Benji to play the final 20 mins where he can be vital with his game management and closing of the game.

Benji comes on fresh and playing limited mins cause of his injury, Gamble to shift to 9 for the final 20 mins.

That so would be ideal for me, Gamble won’t be rushed to play 9 so he can get a feel for the game at 6 and just ease into that hooker role towards the final 20 see how he goes at 9 from there.

Win/win if you ask me

Benji fresh will be amp the boys up

Getting a kid to play a position he’s never played before is a win?

I’m not all for Gamble playing hooker, but it’s not like the bloke will have no clue his service should be good.

Not expecting him to be a Cammy Smith, just see how he goes for the final 20 if he does bad then there you go.

Just get him to give quick service to the boys, his running game is good too let him dart out a few times if he sees an opportunity and he can kick too which is a plus.

A big body in the defence line too.
**I think if you wanted to test him at hooker that’s how you do it.**

… Or you could use trial matches, reserve grade

:brick:

As I said I’m not all for gamble playing 9 at all, but what I wasn trying to say is that if they were too do it in first grade that would be the way too do it.

Tbh I don’t think Gamble should play regardless, I think Tui goes in at 6

…Bring new halves player in for **first NRL game** for 80 minutes... 20 of which include playing in **a new positon**...

What is this logic?

Benji Marshall skipping sleep in race to be fit for the Eels
By James Buckley - 27 March 2018 — 4:38pm

Benji Marshall has been skipping sleep in a bid to heal his left ankle in time for the Tigers Monday showdown with winless Parramatta. The veteran five-eighth feared the worst when he heard his ankle pop in last week's controversial loss to Brisbane, but midnight scans following the match cleared him of another debilitating syndesmosis injury, like the one he suffered in 2015 while still at St George Illawarra.

Instead, the diagnosis was two ruptured ligaments in the joint - a serious enough ailment itself but one Marshall was hopeful he could play through. Since then he's been icing his ankle round the clock to control the swelling and give him every chance of taking on the Eels. "I'm not a big sleeper anyway, I probably have six hours a night at the best of times, I'm a big day napper so I get my naps in in the day," Marshall said. "This ankle's more important than sleeping at the moment. The big challenge is the swelling and trying to get range back in the ankle so you can run. The first three, four days have been really important with icing and compression and just trying to limit how much swelling gets into the joint." "I'm pretty confident I'll be able to play. Just got to have a run Saturday and then try and get through captain's run on Sunday and if I do, then I'll play."

Marshall has been named to take his place at five-eighth, but will be closely monitored throughout the week given the severity of the injury. A 10-day break between games is proving a major advantage, as is his determination not to miss a single minute in his second stint with the Tigers. He played on after suffering the injury on Friday night, and is leaving no stone unturned in getting himself fit for the Eels. "I felt like I heard a pop so I was a little bit nervous, it was probably a little bit of a natural fright reaction," Marshall said. "Adrenaline kicked in and just tried to run it out and got through the game, and then I was pretty sore after. "I've been battling the last four nights just icing and trying to get it right. That's what a lot of people don't see, the hard parts not at training, it's the religious icing, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, then on a machine for 20, off for 20\. You keep doing that for eight hours in a row, then it's five in the morning."

Tyson Gamble and Tuimoala Lolohea are on an extended bench, with one of them likely to take Marshall's place if his ankle doesn't improve, after coach Ivan Cleary named the same 17 that narrowly lost to the Broncos. Eels coach Brad Arthur, meanwhile, has wrung the changes with hooker Cameron King dumped for Kaysa Pritchard, and Will Smith and George Jennings coming into the backline in place of injured duo Jarryd Hayne and Bevan French. While desperate to take his place at five-eighth, Marshall said he would only do so if he was fully fit. "If we didn't have the long turnaround I might not have been able to play," he said. "I'm giving myself every opportunity, and if I feel like I can't be a hundred per cent then I won't play. "It's bad but with our game, there's probably not a lot of games when you're playing at 100 per cent without pain, a lot of players play with a bit of pain," he continued. "That's probably going to be the challenge, getting that swelling out and just getting movement in your ankle because if you don't have the movement, that's where it's going to hurt."

Why are we bothering with this approach.

Unless its a smokescreen to ease Gamble in i just cant see why you would risk a player of Benji's age

We don't know what we are really going to do, that's the point. Why tell Parramatta Benji will be out until the last possible moment.

Doctors make the call on risk of injuries, don't trouble yourself too much with the medical part.

Don't worry I'm not losing any sleep over this selection.

My comments were in relation to the article. The article makes us sound desperate and Marshall keen to play even if not fully recovered.

Could easily just name Tui at 5/8 and take the pressure off Benji.

It's a long and important season, we have depth fit this type of situation.

But yes I understand the docs will make the call not the coach, all good.

Sorry I sounded a bit condescending my last sentence, not intentional.

WRT the article, I don't know, I reckon if you were to play all the player interviews during the week and then read the subsequent articles produced, you'd be surprised how small items make it in and larger items do not.

Benji prob wants to play, media certainly wants to speak to him, so he's telling them under what conditions he would be able to play. BAM and there's an article on it, because Benji still sells papers.

Not a problem. I love a bit of debate but im not that easily offended.

I think youve probably summed up the situation here. Its more the reporters interpretation of some simple comments by Marshall than anything else.
