Benji Contract Upgrade

To be honest. I do hope Benji stays beyond 2014 because if he does I get the feeling his form will have improved. My issue is more the succession plan Wests Tigers has for once Benji moves on/retires. There's no doubt that Moses and Brooks are good enough to take over at some point but the question will be: Can Wests Tigers balance the books in order to retain Marshall for the short term whilst holding onto both Brooks and Moses? That is what I'm interested in.

I've got no doubt it can be done. It's a balancing act which will require the club to look into the future and project where certain players will be in 2-3, 4 years time talent wise. If the club goes out and re-signs Benji and then admits it can't keep both Brooks and Moses, well it's a poor decision purely because from a Business point of view it makes more sense to secure your long term assets over your short terms assets.

Brooks and Moses have proved nothing in first grade. Good luck with that idea.

In all likelyhood they will wind up added to the list of Wests Tigers' forum armchair experts NRL superstars of the future. Along with Blake Lazarus. Sean Meaney. Jacob Miller and so on.

Keeping benji is the best step the club can take to getting back to success.

Wests Tigers are hurting atm.

Once we get a forward pack with sufficent grunt and skill, Benji will be back.

He's just a guy. Some people on here see him as either an idol, or as a fallen idol. Johnny suttion seemed rubbish for almost a decade.... Souths recruit the best back in the comp, get the right coach.. and now look.

Benji was rubbish against the Broncos... but what do you expect? With our pack, injuries... in brissy we got the result we deserved.

Besides... having benji is money in the bank.

some people live in fairy land and ur one of them, he is washed up as a NRL player.

A lot of people reckon Benji could have been up there with the immortals if he had a good coach throughout his career.

Yeah cause Tim Sheens was rubbish eh.
Took over a rabble with no money… Mixed vetrerans, youth and rejects... brilliant attacking football club wins the Comp. Pure crap when you consider what came before him at wests tigers.

Benji has won a World Cup, Tri Series and Golden Boot.....and the comp (so thats about 3 things that stacey jones never won in his career.). But yeah.... If only he had a good coach. Maybe if he did a scott prince and dumped us after 2005 for more money and a beachouse things might have been different.

Wests tigers. The masochists choice.

I live in Newtown. Which is kind of like Fairy Land. I've also lived in Campbelltown and Leichhardt.

You don't know anything about being an NRL player. I know nothing about being an NRL player.

The cowboys missed the finals in 2009 and came an embarrasing 15th in 2010\. Did that mean thurston was finished as an NRL Player?? Of course not.

The roosters finished last in 2009 and then made the GF in 2010… then they didnt make the finals the next year. What does that say about Mitchell Pearce... Look at where the roosters are now.

Most clubs with the exception of the Storm and Manly get to go through a really crappy crappy season every once in a while. We are not exempt from that, so no sense harming ourselves because we want to make a scapegoat out of our best ever player.

Haven't really watch him much this year and by the sounds of it I'm glad i haven't , I thought I was the biggest Benji basher on here! anyway I went to the broncos game and was disgusted in what I saw the pathetic attempt on prince is the last thing I will see Benji do if he remains at this club. It happened right infront of me and for those of you that were there I was the one standing in the isle and slamming my empty beer cup into the ground as prince put the ball down then giving Benji a mouthful and walking out.
I have seen enough and that for me was the straw that broke my back.
I will still follow the results but I refuse to watch another game he plays in i just can't do it anymore. So everybody enjoy him you won't hear anymore bashing from me, if by some miracle he decides to start playing like a first grade footballer again I'll be interested in seeing that but I won't hold my breath.

Hopfully he can regain the form he did in 2010 and 2011 in the future.

Yeah but even then but don't forget we had some pretty rubbish games in both of those seasons. Its not like he romped through 2010 and 2011 in untouchable form. We were GARBAGE in the first half of 2011.

Souths decked us 50 to 10 at the SCG in 2010\. That was WITH Ellis, Payten Gibbs and co in the side… I don't understand how people can be harder on Benjis performances NOW than they were then. Esp with the player losses to other clubs and injury.

It will come good. Just wait for a bit. Its like the differnce between Brad Fittler at the start of his career at Penrith and then the big finish when he was well into his 30s at the Roosters.

For all those who forget Benji was integral in the key tries (each to Nofaloma) in our latest wins against
North Queensland and Penrith.

Article on WT website with Benji and the contract talk if anyone wants a read of it.

Its not his attack that is that bad. He still comes up with good plays and probably better than anyone else in our team can. The problem is that his defence has been really bad and he is still taking dumb options rather than the safe play at the wrong time too often.

The thing is he can turn this around I think really easily. The question is will he.

I would think having Benji would mean there is much less, if any, money in the bank!

Benji focusing on lifting his game

Benji focusing on lifting his game

Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall says his main focus is on lifting his own game and not contractual negotiations.

Speaking this morning ahead of the team’s final training session before tomorrow night’s home match against Canberra Raiders at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, Marshall says he is not worried about constant talk of his playing future. He is contracted to Wests Tigers until the end of 2015.

“It’s why I have a manager so I can just focus on playing. My contract negotiations have been the furthest thing from my mind at the moment,’’ Marshall stated.

“My priority is to try and play good for the team and that’s my focus. My manager can take care of that side and I’ll just be worrying about playing.

“I’m pretty sure the Club is trying to do something to renegotiate my contract. This week is a big game for us and I’ve just been focusing on that.

“After the game, I’m sure I will be able to sit down and talk about what is happening in the future but for now, it is about this game.

“I signed a deal for five years two years ago. I love to be here for life and if the Club sees it that way, I’m sure I would be.”

Marshall said he was aware of the criticism of his own game and the constant scrutiny that comes with being a high profile player.

“You just get use to it but it doesn’t affect the way I play. If anything it makes you want to play better,’’ he said.

“We are back at home at Campbelltown and I’m looking forward to putting in a good performance for our team.

“My form has been a bit patchy lately, a bit up and down. I like to be playing better. No one likes to be embarrassed in defence and your ego takes a hit a little bit. You just have to go back to the drawing board and work hard.”

Marshall said the team must improve its field position in games.

“We have been playing out of our half a lot lately and it makes it a lot harder for our halves to try and create opportunities,’’ he said.

“I think the more we play in the opposition half, then the more chances guys like myself and Curtis Sironen have to try and create tries and opportunities.

“Canberra have been going pretty good this year. Having guys like (Terry) Campese back and the way their forward pack has been going, they are pretty hard to stop once they get a roll on.

“That’s our sort of goal for tomorrow night, to try and stop that roll on through the middle and limit their opportunities.

“Both sides have players out. It is going to come down to who runs harder and who tackles harder. Hopefully that’s us tomorrow.”

considering that our halves kicking game and last tackle options are very significant contributors to our ordinary field position that's all a bit rich!

BINGO !

What defence doesnt lift when a team is pinned on their line? I hear all this crap about playing better behind a dominant forward pack, what a crock. With Benji, yes Benji, early kicking into Manly's corner, we were able to dominate the Sea Eagles pack. at the start of the game… for set upon set a well regarded pack was at the mercy of the Tigers.

Benji needs to realise that for our pack to do their job they need field position, field position he consistantly pisses up the wall multiple times a game, in positions when his "Hail Mary" most likely wouldnt be viable anyway. The field position struggle isnt a one set gamble, blow it, and you will be struggling out off your line for several sets, doing it tough to make 30m for a crap kick to be in the same position next set... only the toughest of defences survive that sort of pressure.

Our pack hasnt failed. Our 5th tackle options have. Benji needs to know when to hold em, know when to fold em.... but the bloke is just all in every hand. Zero football brain.

no doubt the old line of " other clubs and other codes want me" will be used in an attempt to push up his price.

yep least metres made in the nrl by almost a kilometre. Props to our pack.

"My form has been patchy lately "

Gee Benji some people must pump your ass so full of air its unbelievable

You have been shocking since the later half of 2011

Geez some of you have issues. He said exactly what he should have said and you still find fault.

His form isn't good enough but he definitely isn't shirking anything at all. He speaks well.

I have defended his speaking on behalf of the team…. I am more taking to task the crew who constantly bleat the "behind the dominant forward pack".
