As Ray Warren once said ...
“Marshall skips away “...

While Benji was awesome no doubt, let’s not forget Richards in that try. For a start he was needled up and it was unbelievable that he was even on the field. Richards caught Benji’s flick pass on a bung leg. Secondly the fend he put on Jensen with his right arm was equally as magical when considering he usually carried the ball with that arm and had never fended anyone before with his right arm. The whole try from start to finish was one of the great Grand Final trys.

Had Richards not did what he did would Benji still have reached the heights of fandom he did? It’s an interesting thought.

Agree totally on this - Richards does not get the accolades he deserved for this try. Basically if you listen to most people you would not know that Richards was involved at all.

A pass from Hodgson sent Benji on his way upfield, breaks an attempted tackle by Sing, then a brilliant flick pass by Benji, miraculously he caught it himself, gets away from Bowen, sidestepped Jensen whilst pushing him away, scored the try - will attempt to kick the goal.

Did Richards really play? - One of the greatest solo tries of all time - Yeah right!

Just don't mention where Thurston was taken out after the kick that opened the hole. ???

Fair play in 2005 ??????

Too right bro

It's not just Benji's missed tackle stats, it's how important those tackles were. Around the time it came out we weren't offering him another contract, I remember reading he was top of the league for missed tackles that led to tries?
Having such a poor defender in the line puts pressure on the whole team, not just those around him.
Benji's reluctance to use his shoulder is a reflection of attitued, and as has also been mentioned, we need to get rid of that sort of attitude - because quite simply it's NOT okay to defend like that... the answer to poor defence is NOT to just try and out-score the opposition.
It really did seem that Madge relaxed his attitude to the squad and the increase in points against was the result.
Benji may be okay in a team that already has excellent defence, but that sure ain't us.

Not disagreeing, I think Benji not using his shoulders has a lot todo with the reconstructions he needed early in his career. It physical and mentality effected that part of his game.

Absolutely Mike!
But... on occasions he HAS used his shoulder - and powerfully - very well in recent years, just that it only happens rarely. That is a mind-set thing which is linked to attitude.
NRL is not a game in which you can tackle properly when the mood takes you. It's an all-in, tough, big contact deal. IMO Benji needed to play all-in when it came to defence, but he didn't.

Sweet. The problem with the wests Tigers is Benji. Get rid of him and it's onwards and upwards. Remember that was the quick fix solution at the end of 2013 as well. Groundhog day...

No it wasn't, Benji asked for a release with 2 years left on his contract in 2013, they didn't get rid of him

They said yes to the request so they decided to get rid. And the years of success flowed. Benji made the semis 2 out of 3 years....2 more years than this organization

That is one bog ordinary argument, he kicked up a stink and wanted out, hardly the club getting rid of him, but you carry on with your Benji love mate.
Saints got rid of him in 2016, Broncos a year later in 2017, if Wayne loved him that much he would have signed him up, but no club wanted him at the end of 2017. Now 3 years later there are no clubs fighting for his signature, Benji as a good player ceased to exist after 2012.

Surely you can let this go now?

I am merely pointing out that Benji wasn't forced out of the club in 2013, the club should not be getting belted over this decision by a Benji lover who feels aggrieved

Mate, he is gone, let the ones that wanted him to stay vent. Without toing and froing the discussion will be over and done with a lot quicker.

Most of the venting is by Benji haters still going on about him. Note, I don't want him to stay on, but he is my fav Tigers player for sure. If I say anything positive I get ten replies against me and it becomes a poop show ? So I'll hold off discussing my fav Tigers player on a Tigers forum. I'll do it in private ?

I decided to stop replying to anything to let the conversation die.

Like the other poster said I look forward to next year to see what player all the blame is given to. At least it won't be my fav ? May the debate die, as the issue is already resolved.

Let's all move on

Its pretty much a 3 way tie for me between Benji, Hodgo and Chris as my favourite Wests Tigers player. I agree it is time to move on from both Benji and Chris but find it incredibly sad people are still having dig even though he has gone. He hasn't handled his exit well but lets now remember the good he achieved while he was here, he is gone now so bagging him doesn't really acomplish anything anymore.

And makes me wonder how much that has contributed to WT continued middle of the road performance.

I think Madge May have been the best coach Benji ever had? All his other coaches seemed to want to bench him, but Madge only benched him once. I think if Madge had come along 10 or 12 years ago maybe they could have had that Cammy/ Bellyache kind of relationship, which would have helped Benji produce some scintillating footy. imo.

What difference does it make now though, he is gone, thankfully. Just leave those who want to remember him in a different light be. As it really doesn't make any difference now.

To Benji's credit, he wears his heart on his sleeve. During Benji's speech at the awards night he made mention of the fact that he was disappointed that he was moving on from the club.

Found it off putting that he made mention of Ivan Cleary and thanked him from allowing him back to the club, but had no words on Madge.

I get his desire to play on, but the diplomatic thing to do would be to keep a cordial relationship with madge as Benji could easily have a job for life post footy with the club.

Anyway, he's a competitor and believes he's still got it. Time will tell.

The most diplomatic thing Benji could have done was to keep his mouth shut.

If he was a diplomat, I’m sure he would have got an ideal foreign posting. But he’s not. So we can expect to hear more over the next few years.

Typical passive/aggressive Benji blab fest. The guys a fake. Hopefully he gets a spot at the sharks so they can miss the 8 next season. His "genuine love for the club" is not shining through at all when he carries on like this.

if Marshall plays on IMO it will tarnish his legacy. Like when Fatty went from Manly to Easts.
Players need to retire with dignity and grace rather than going a season too many and look a
Shadow of their former greatness. Thank you for 2005.

This season was Benji’s one season too many.

To think that the whole team “got scared” because Benji was dropped is absolutely ridiculous. Did they suffer with the same fear when others were dropped? Or was it the fear of not knowing what to do because the co-captain was not there?

Definitely true about signing the caps.It was a thank you from the club to members that pledged their membership money and you could pick the player you wanted to sign the cap. I chose Harry Grant and he signed mine, thanks again Tiger Harry and hubby picked Benji but was told Benji didn’t have time which was disappointing because we have always supported Benji even when he played for other clubs and so unbeknown to us at first,Chris Lawrence signed the cap. Thanks Chris you are a Tiger great through and through.

Thanks for that information.Benji is certainly displaying all the petulant attitude that he did when he paraded around in a rugby union jumper while still being paid by WT.
Very very disappointing
