Don’t think people are laughing at Benji for not getting a contract more the media, we got torn apart by players rival fans and the media for letting Benji go and guess what, no one else wants him either. Seems like we made the right choice and he should’ve retired and gone out like the true legend he is.

We made the right choice for us 100%, that doesn't mean he should have to retire, no one else wanting him doesn't take away that desire to play either. Too many people on here want to keep bagging the bloke even after he left, so what if he wants to keep playing, you are a long time retired.

If he still has the itch then no one can stop him. Sometimes some people don’t know when to stop though. He’ll probably end up at bulldogs with his brother which would be nice for him. It’s not like he’s getting injured and copping knocks he’s just not playing that great doesn’t mean he has to retire. If doggies don’t take him he might not have a choice though

No he may not have a choice, I just don't understand why that makes him the subject of ridicule everytime his name is mentioned. He played a massive part of getting us our only success we have ever had, he is no longer here, why can't people remember the positives?

It’s just recency bias. Once he retires it’ll be nothing but love for Benji. Just gotta watch a few highlight reels and that 05 final to jog everyone’s memories ?

I watched the 05 Sharks game today, maybe that is why I'm sticking up for him atm. I had forgotten the flick he throws while falling to set up Pat Richards in that game.

Any chance you can share a link to the game? I was there live and it was one of those rare moments where you just don't believe what you've see. Been a long time since I watched it and full replays of games from that season are hard to find.

Interestingly enough, a couple of guys on here have started posting some of the older games lol. I was also there live that day. What a great day and couple of months that was.. Head to this thread to get the torrents from the games they have posted already.

Oh my god..... thanks mate

Thank @joebob and @MAGPIES1963 . @joebob is converting @MAGPIES1963 old VHS tapes so all thanks go to them. I used to have a widescreen DVD recording of that Sharks game that a lost a couple of years ago so even getting a ripped VHS copy of it back is awesome to have.

Off work tomorrow night have to download that torrent haha

Benji is Johnno Steffensen's rebound.he should have taken a hint & got on with the media/vogue gigs. 2005 was a lifetime ago. Surrounded by too many yes man.

Benji is past the NRL,he isnt able to defend or attack like he used to......

I reckon he should be tutoring the young WTs to become a relentless force in the next couple of years....

His talent and undeniable love for the club should be put back in the club he calls home....

After his behaviour surrounding his non-contract this year, it will be a few years before he is welcomed back to the club. Hopefully by then his mind hasn't been poisoned from working with Murdoch-run Fox League.

I have said for 2 years we need to get rid of him, he is holding us back, other teams obviously thought the same

Then I guess the defence of BJ and Nofo will improve dramatically. Great to hear and I cannot wait.

I personally would have liked him retire so he could have had that farewell with us. He could have had a proper send off by the club he spent most of his career at, rather than just what likely will be just petering out after not being taken up elsewhere.

That being said, I do agree with you in that if he doesn't think it's time that is his prerogative. It's the only job he's ever had, and he's probably loved every minute of it and he doesn't want to give it up yet. That's fine.

The only thing that has really ground my gears with this situation is that we have been slammed from all sides that we did the wrong thing by him, including him agitating in the media. Well 15 other clubs in the league appear to be thinking the same way.

There wouldn't be a single WT supporter who hasn't enjoyed and appreciated Benji Marshall in his years here. He had some flaws, but show me a footballer who hasn't.

The media used his non contract as another reason to bash us with their agenda. We made the right choice, we know it and the other clubs know it too.

He will be in the TOP 5 of all time WT players without doubt. Enjoy his legacy.

My guess he will get a new club ... but not for the $300k he was asking.

Apparantly he wants 400k not 300k either way it is far to much

If he is asking $400k then he won’t play in the NRL again. He’s living in the past.

Y'all living in the past....

Marshall "Let it Go Let it Go". Thanks for the memories and there is a lot of them but sersiously the game has moved on and if WT (who have a history of throwing silly money at has beens) aren't offering you a contact than there is your answer. I am sure in retirement WT and Foxtel will look after you and your family.

great lifestyle for him and missus

Well, apart from THE COVID.

Yes that is a major downfall - their 2021 season starts in late March so highly unlikely Covid will be sorted in the UK by then.

it's his life and isn't contracted to us. Cudos on him for giving it his all. I still think that he can add to a struggling team short on halves.

By the looks of it, those teams disagree.

I’m pretty sure they disagree on his asking price

NRL legend Benji Marshall’s hopes of an NRL contract for 2021 have been plunged into a desolate situation following a report his top hope Cronulla isn’t interested.

Marshall’s dwindling options to continue his career into one final season at a rival club headline a series of dramatic moves taking shape across the NRL player market.

It was reported this week the Sharks loomed as Marshall’s most likely home for next year, but a contrasting report on Friday revealed Cronulla isn’t looking at the veteran playmaker.

The Daily Telegraph’s Dave Riccio told SEN Radio in Sydney the Sharks have instead focused on locking down 21-year-old halfback Braydon Trindall to join Chad Townsend and Shaun Johnson in a stacked playmaking roster. Johnson, however, will also miss part of the 2021 season through injury.

There may be no room for Marshall.

The 35-year-old has also been linked with a move to the Cowboys and North Queensland now appears to be his final hope.

Marshall is still weighing up retirement, but could provide much needed experience to any club looking for a leader.

“As far as my intel is concerned the Sharks aren’t heading down that path,” Riccio told Breakfast with Vossy.

“I understand they’re about to re-sign Braydon Trindall, their young half coming through the ranks and given that they already have Chad Townsend and Shaun Johnson at the club, I don’t think Benji Marshall will be heading to the Shire.”

Riccio also revealed the Sharks have emerged as a late player in the race for highly-fancied Panthers rising star Matt Burton, who has been linked to a rich offer from the Bulldogs.

According to reports, The Dogs have offered Burton a $1.6 million deal for 2022 and 2023 - and are hoping the Panthers will grant him an early release to join Canterbury for the 2021 season.

However, the Sharks could emerge late to snatch the playmaking utility.

“Interestingly, the Sharks are making a little play for Matt Burton,” Riccio said.

“We all know the Bulldogs are in the box seat to pry Matt Burton out of Penrith, however, I understand the Sharks — as somewhat of a replacement for the off-contract Matt Moylan at the end of next year — Matt Burton is right on their radar.”

Shame, Benji should have milked the send off with us and taken a gig with the tigers instead.

Yep. All he has done is caused angst with the club again, he missed out on a proper send off and now he may be unceremoniously bumped out of the game.

Both he and the club have come off second best here. Club has copped it for exercising their right not to keep him and he could well be forced into retirement.

The trouble with Benji is that he wants to play on - but in FG. I think any coach who knows his history will know one taste of the FG and the focus becomes on how long he can hold onto the position.- and the minute he is dropped it's is all over the media. Not sure that any club wants the 2nd fiddle half commanding more attention than the team.

Yes, there's a lot of baggage there.
