Benji Marshall fires back in Tim Sheens feud

A WAR of words has erupted between Benji Marshall and former coach Tim Sheens over Sheens' sacking from the Tigers.

Sheens last week accused Marshall of not offering him support in the lead up to his sacking and suggested the star playmaker contributed to his downfall as Tigers’ coach last September.

Marshall hit back today, saying the club board was wholly responsible for Sheens’ dismissal.

"That (Sheens' sacking) had nothing to do with me," Marshall said.

"Obviously there are a lot of rumours going around, but at the end of the day, I know the truth.

"I don’t influence what the board does. They make their own decision.

"I’ll stand by what I’ve done. I’ve done nothing wrong.

"It’s just disappointing because the relationship we did have, he’s had to come out and say that."
The feud began in September last year – five days before Sheens' sacking – following comments made by Marshall on The Footy Show.

"His coaching ability no doubt is up there with the best in the world. And you don't replace a coach - unless there's someone better," Marshall said.

"If they find someone better, well maybe it might be time for a change."

The Kangaroos coach, who spent 10 years in charge of the Tigers, said he felt let down by Marshall.

"I'd have to say I was a bit disappointed. I expected a little bit better," Sheens said last week on NRL 360.

"But in saying that, if that's the way the club wanted to go, it's the way they wanted to go.

"There was a lot of emotion about that week with Benj, with Beau Ryan and Chris Heighington leaving on the Monday - I think that (Marshall's comments) was on the Thursday.

"But again, I expected a little bit better."

Asked whether a show of public support from senior players like Marshall and skipper Robbie Farah could have saved his job, Sheens responded: "Put it this way: players get rid of coaches".

"It's generally senior players too," he added.

"The 19-year-old; if you tell him it's black and it's white, he'll still believe it's black. The older player who starts to struggle with their form, and for whatever reason isn't happy - or his form isn't happy - looks externally rather than internally. That causes generally the demise of coaches."

A bit of a rehash of an older story…

i think this sums up the mentality of the old canberra boys to be honest with u

sheens, daley, stuart… they create their little circles and are 100% loyal to those in them.. not a bad trait to have... but when it comes to a competitive sport you need to know when to pull the plug. sheens never publicly critisized marshall in a way saying "find someone better"... if he did benji would have had the same "i expected better" response..

benji shouldnt have said what he said publicly, given the support sheens gave him over the years (even when he was playing badly).

p.s.
if pearce gets a start in origin this year i'll support qld...
reynolds and reynolds for me..

Is this for real? are we talking about 2 grown men here or 2 school girls. This is embarrassing! Reading stuff like this just makes me believe more strongly that we'll be better off without Benji as well.

Benji's was fairly controlled, the reporter asked and it was a good response.

Notice that Benji was there for a good cause, yet we only got an article about Sheens v Benji and a war of words….media know how to hit everyones buttons thats for sure.

The video puts this whole thing into perspective.

TBH I don't think what Benji said on The Footy Show was too bad really, he didn't dump on Sheens like it was made out. Then again he really should have backed Sheens to the hilt, as Sheens had done for him many, many times before.
I have no doubt that the senior players had a role in Sheens getting the sack, however, Sheens should have seen that we were growing stale under his leadership and done something to rectify it earlier.

If the players thought that they were growing stale under Sheens their last two games indicate that they have gone even more stale with a new coach.

Sheens is right; Benji's comments on the Footy Show were carefully crafted and left little doubt that he thought it time for Sheens to go. And while it is unfortunate to see a close relationship take a knock, Benji really couldn't have said anything else and remained true to himself, because everyone bar Sheens knew it was time for him to go.

sheens supported benji through thick and thin. i guess he expected the same in return. the comments, somewhat minor, were big for the relationship those two had.

Were talking about a coach who is paid to coach football and a player who is paid to play here right. If they both actually did what they were paid to do well, then this talk doesn't take place.

Sheens still having a negative affect from the grave.
This story needs to fade away.

If Tim Sheen's wasn't so unpredictable last year ,doing things that nobody could understand then he would probably still have the top job. If you ask me he bought this on himself. I was a huge Tim Sheen's supporter and I always will be grateful for what he has done for the Wests Tigers over the 10 years but when you've ran out of ideas it's time to go.

Benji did return the support, for years and years…..many times clearly sprouting spin.
But when a coach loses the shed...the situation becomes untenable and the BS takes its toll....one must go.
