Benji Marshall: 'I would never walk out'

And 'round and 'round and 'round we go and where we stop? How about we take him at his word, see if he has genuinely lifted his form and support him in his progress? If it's all rhetoric, sooner or later it will start ringing in his ears.

Benji has won more games for us in the past than he has lost for us.

Having said that, so he should. I too think he gets bagged a little too often. But as Ink says, you take the accolades and the dollars when it's good, you have to take the reverse when it's bad. I think he does that. He isn't whinging and whining that I've seen. I haven't seen him blame anyone other than himself, which is a credit to him.

What does irk me though is people who criticise regardless of his response. He knows his form is crap and he is trying to work out why. I'm not sure what some people actually want him to say….....

You could probably use this argument at the start of his career, or mdway thru…but geezus this is his 11th year in the top grade.....

...11 years....sooner or later???

Reply to ink. You can go through a form slump at any time in your career. Read what some of the top players of the past are saying. He's getting older, slower and realises he has to do something to get into form. That's why I say if he doesn't get back to form his words will start ringing in his ears. He can only say "I'm working on it" for so long without improvement before his own pride will make him realise it aint happening. I'm hoping it does start happening. I really think he needs a halfback next to him to see his best though.

Yeah, I'll pay that. He's always been hot & cold and probably the most frustrating player I've ever followed. But I reckon he's a confidence, low percentage player. So that's what you get. Make or break.

I don't think he's an overview/planner playmaker like Darren Lockyer, working the odds. He's a wildcard that plays instant options. To do that he requires a team around him that knows what he's up to including a half that can draw opposition and set him up in order for him to take it further. I might be wrong and he's a has been that will never come good. I truly hope not.

I reckon he's a champion, just not your classic leader.

Is he in a slump though?

He's been that up & down constantly over those 11 years I wouldnt know.

Agreed. I love Benji but his form at the moment is as per usual. He plays great sometimes. I even think this year apart from the game where he went missing he has had less poor plays than in the past.

Trying to compare Benji's slump to Andrew Johns's slumps is ludicrous really

Johns in a slump would be about as noticeable as Benji in top form

I don't think there is any point trying to compare them. Andrew Johns was a controller, a conductor who knows the score and directs the orchestra to play to his tune. Benji Marshall is a talented soloist. He's not the overall conductor but when be plays his bit (with the support of the orchestra around him) he has an impact on the composition. Anybody can have a form slump.
