Benji Marshall ignored weeks of NRL calls

Thats what I felt…. saying he had 3 hrs to make a decision, shows that he is either naieve or totally and utterly failed by his management. I have a feeling the reality and gravity of his decision is going to hit him like a tonne of bricks sometime soon. Got to admire the bloke for standing for his convictions however ilconcieved they may seem to be.
 
Benji seems reasonable but made a foolish and unsound decision. The advice coming to him doesn't seemed sound and it is not looking after his family. I hope he will concentrate on his football, things will look after themselves. Even if he gives a little now, he will stand to benefit a lot more in the future. I would like him to stay and concentrate on his football, he could do a lot worse by leaving the West Tigers.

Maybe the club told him that was the deadline to resign by? We were all expecting him to resign that day so maybe that was the clubs day for him

In hindsight I find it interesting that Humphreys was supposed to depart in August but left very quickly in June just before the real pressure was applied on Benji's contract negotiations. It seems to me that the Board, COO or Coach (or all) decided that it was time to move him on and one way or another painted him into a corner and covered there arses by getting Humphreys to leave the building first to cover their tracks.

Don't get me wrong, I think for a number of reasons it was time for Benji to move on but the thing that really gives me the shits is the level of deceit that exists in the management of the club. And you don't have to look too far back for confirmation when you consider what happened to some of the other recent departures who all said basically the same thing.

I really hope that people like Mayer & Potter can quickly earn some respect for management as otherwise we are going to be heading for another train wreck in 2014 and beyond.

Understand that business is business (and I play it tougher than most) but if you don't treat your employees honestly and fairly there is no way you can expect the same from them.

This for me is the issue Benji can't deal with and if it were me I would have done the exactly same thing.

This right here is the crux of the issue. The guy had a choice between taking the money on the table but playing for management that has failed to act in good faith, or pulling the pin on not only a certain playing career, but a certain media career after football as well.

Add to that he made it clear that he didn't want to play for another club and the picture seems pretty clear to me. This wasn't an attempt at a cash grab, this wasn't an out of sorts guy cutting and running to play for another code, this is a loyal guy who loves his job but is leaving what he deems to be an unfair workplace.

Yet people still want to blame him for all this?
 
Thats a good point snowleopard. Interesting to hear him say Robbie was his first point of call. I have never believed the press these two dont get along. They are best mates - they have said this for years. You can see it in the way they play together. He said Rob had the sh!ts. Imagine he walked as well…management does need to fix their perception and communication with the players.
 
re: the #9 interview… how is it possible for the club to give him an ultimatum - he was already signed with us for 14 and 15 (admittedly not on $750k a year)... so the tigers weren't going to get rid of him.. he was still on contract... i dont get it..

Really not sure what makes your opinions on this subject so much more valid than everyone else that you go to such lengths to make threats over it. Is it really worth that much to you? I think the majority of people being critical make valid points. The guy had 2 yrs to run on his contract, what was the hurry? If he really was a great clubman like he claimed he'd have stuck his head down and attempted to get back the magic he once had. Things have changed this yr, mostly for the better. We have a coach who isn't afraid to be an authority figure and show whose boss and it got Benji's nose out of joint. No need for the macho BS cos someone doesn't agree.

Maybe they had re-designed his contract and that was what he had to sign? I dont know, something else happened. He had shonky hand shake agreements…who knows what they fully entailed.
 
The thing I haven't understood in all this is the 'handshake agreement'.
How shit is his manager to not ensure that it was actually written into the contract.

That would be interesting. I doubt Benji would remain as diplomatic if that happened and we might finally be privvy to the truth then.

Being critical and slandering a player for no reason are two completely different things. There have been valid concerns raised and I agree with most of them. I dont agree with the way some have gone off half cocked, calling him a dog etc…and now it may turn out that he isnt in the wrong.

How would you know whether of not he hasnt been? He is starting to build confidence with his outside men, most of whom are new to his style of play. Our attack has started to improve recently if you hadnt noticed. 3 months ago we were lucky to score more than 1 try per game. Now we are scoring 3 or 4.

Once again stating stuff the papers said. I havent heard Benji or Potter claim this once.
