Benji Marshall involved in late-night incident

Wow, went out for a bit and missed all this…. had a quick read over.
As far as I'm concerned this is a HATE CRIME & that can't be tolerated.
I believe if you feel threatened, which in a situation with people telling you to "Go back to where you came from" you would feel this way, you have the right defend yourself.
People think footballers are tough and so on so more than likely want to prove themselves against them to have a story to tell "da boyz" or whatever but when it comes down to it, they're professional athletes not FIGHTERS.
We all saw Benji swing on Mitchell Peace last year, he isn't the best thrower but I'm not unhappy some trouble maker got his lip split for talking trash. He probably expected Benji to take it and be like yah whatever but he shaped up and broke his pride, clearly by the guy going to the police about a situation he seems to have caused.
Whats a split lip anyway? If you wanna act brave in front of your mates then get called out on it then act like a BABY* afterward you deserve whatever you get. Terrible if Benji gets troubles from this incident.

WESTS Tigers superstar Benji Marshall - the new "Face of League" - is under police investigation for allegedly assaulting a man in an alcohol-fuelled fistfight outside a fast-food restaurant in The Rocks.
The NRL pin-up boy's manager Martin Tauber last night told The Sunday Telegraph Marshall "tapped" a man on the nose after he had been racially abused.
Just four days after Marshall officially launched the 2011 season for the NRL, his alleged attack has plunged the code back into crisis a week before the first game of the year.
The New Zealand-born star had been at a black-tie charity event with his girlfriend and stopped off at the George St McDonald's at 3.20am yesterday when the fight erupted.
According to Tauber, the star hit the man after a series of racial taunts.
A police statement said Marshall was at the centre of a "verbal altercation" with the 24-year-old alleged victim, who was with up to 10 people.
Police said Marshall and another male had allegedly assaulted the man "before leaving the area".
"We'll allege that Benji Marshall has punched the gentleman in the mouth," a police source told The Sunday Telegraph.
"He's responded to some kind of verbal joust from the victim. Alcohol is believed to be a factor."
The Sunday Telegraph has been told the attack was racially motivated and Marshall, the New Zealand Test captain, was "baited" a number of times by the alleged assault victim.
The man is alleged to have "racially abused" the footballer and called him a "black c***" several times.
Marshall's manager said: "One of them started to shout at him and said: 'Go back to New Zealand you black c***'."
"He (Marshall) tried to walk away from him - he tried to make light of it and then the guy did it again."
Police attended the scene and requested security footage from McDonald's.
NRL chief executive David Gallop last night said the NRL would closely monitor the incident and any police investigation.
"It is always important that the club is given the opportunity to examine the facts and report to the NRL before we determine whether there is a need for intervention on our part."
Marshall, who recently talked about the "curse" of being the "face of league", is expected to be interviewed by police tomorrow.
Just hours before the incident, he told The Sunday Telegraph: "The only thing I see is that 99 players out of 100 do the right thing for me," Marshall said.
"I've had a pretty clean image and I want to keep it that way."

Where were the management of the MacDonalds restaurant ??? Having done this 4 almost 16 years have had many issues over years as we are next to 2 pubs 1 on either side, that if there were any problems would be intervening by telling people to leave and ringing police (have had at times 30 people about to rumble ) . This is hard issue we are taught as kids that 2 wrongs don't make a right . No one should ever be racially abused and the punishment for that should be greater . I am sure Benji regrets his actions also Should there be any punishment NO It is almost like when two cars back into each other in car park Both at fault so you pay for own damage Hope this does not damage Benji's image

did you guys read the other day in some aussie paper/internet site (both) that white anglo saxon australians in the sydney are are the worst drinkers/most violent in the world. they cant handle their drink. that guy that insulted benji should be arrested and deported as well as his cronies. why cant we handle our drink people. please tell your friends to handle their drinks. this is ridiculous and sad.

Benji has every right to go out and have a feed at maccas whenever he want, and has the right to enjoy his time in peace. If some bloke wants to start gobbling off at anybody the way this has been alledged then he'd better be ready to put his hands up. To then go to the coppers and complain he's been assaulted is simply weak. Idiot is looking for a payout. Even with his 10 mates backing him up he had nothing. Weak spineless goose is what comes to mind, and I'd say that about any tool that tries to bait, anybody from any walk of life, not especially a footballer. You never know what people are carrying these days. What is society coming to?

haha you guys actually think through this incident marshall will be booted from the club?? BENJI MARSHALL? booted from the Wests Tigers over a small stupid incident like this? haha thats laughable, the media is making it out to be something so secretive and they will try and make it such a big deal its not funny… even Carney drink driving is worse then this...

My thoughts on the situation are this;
1) if the Wests Tigers don't come out in force and make a public announcement in full support of Benji then in will be a disgrace . It is time for Humphreys to show what he is made of and make a statement that supports Benji 100% .
2) any legal action taken against Benji will be a disgrace and not in the public interest.
3) the person racially vilifying Benji should face sanctions that prohibit racial vilification,
4) the NRL should immediately come out and support Benji in this situation whereby it is clear that this player has been baited by disgraceful scum.
