Benji Marshall - Mega Thread

Marshall to bench is a cautious step to dropping him to nsw cup. The media will be all over it this weekend.

Or it is another way of saying 'we don't want you here but we can't afford to pay you out so ask for a release.'

I've already said this in another thread but perhaps the option to drop Marshall and promote wasn't open to him due to cap expenditure in both first grade and NSW cup?

If that is the case, it's a sad state of affairs when you're looking at these issues in round 10.

I agree Col. If Benji is to be demoted, he should have had the guts to go the whole hog. Benji is either 5/8th or dropped completely. What Potter has done here is weaken the forwards, weaken the halves and wasted a bench spot.

Spot on mate, right up there with his call of taking Farah off for a spell against Manly.

I admire potter for doing what needed to be done….it may wake benji up...or he has a sook and looks for another club...that wouldnt surprise...This is what sheens should have done with some players last year

Potter had to make a stance, as for making the bench weaker,I don't agree, the forward you have lost off the bench is playing no6 and will revert back to the forwards when Benchy gets his start.

Really it would not matter what team he selected, they are going to get a touch up,but he is sending out a clear warning to everyone that he expects all players to have a dig

Unless he's having a blinder, Fulton will move to the forwards when benji comes on so there are the same number of forwards in the team as last week. Notwithstanding, the tigers forwards will have to play out of their skin or it could be a massacre.

A brave decision it shows me Potter is running the team , to drop one of your highest paid stars is brave only time will tell how Benji takes it I just wish Potter had the full squad to choose from because Blair would be the first to go on my list.

It also sends a clear message to the rest of the under performing koala bears that there are no more protected species either perform or you are going to be dropped. As for Fulton going to 5/8 its purely to stop Sutton tearing us apart.

Sheens made some ridiculous decisions over the years re team selections. We have a new clown people. Your a joke Mick Potter.

I agree to some extent potter is hedging his bets either drop the bloke or don't drop him, this just proves that potter is way out of his depth.
Benji goes missing in games now so being sat on the bench is not really proving a point more just giving him a rest.
When he does come on say after 20 mins do you really see him coming off again.

I think there may be too much at stake sponsorship wise for benji to go to reserve grade

He may well start the game, Tuesdays lists have rarely meant little.

I think getting hooked midway thru a game or dumped to reggies is worse than starting off the bench, this will be as tough as it gets for benji - there'll be no worse imo

I'm glad we have a Coach who is prepared to make some tough calls [if it was Potter's call], but this is Benji Marshall… I think his form has been poor and he hasnt put in over the past month, and if the coach wants to send him a message, great.

What I dont understand is why do it in the public spotlight???

Drop Benji to get his shit together, but tell the media he is injured. He still gets the message?!

If you seriously think bench is the right place for him to get the message, well name him in his usual position and start him from the bench on game day. He still gets the message?!

I'm feeling we are sending a Negative Commercial Message to all the wrong people the way this is being played out!!!

He's got a fair ego Watto, it may have been Potter's intention for Marshall to cop a little from the press and public in general. I'm happy with the way it's played out, it might humble him a little.

Leaks watto.
Concords as watertight as a pair of fishnet stockings.
Imagine the kerfuffle if the 'truth' got out.
Would only take one disgruntled person manager

LOVE IT. Yesterday's Hero and overweight and not match fit.

Good one Harry Potter.

Let's release him to Japanese Rugby at year's end if his form does not improve dramastically.

Time for next generation to shine through in 2014\. Brooks and Moses.

I'd think this has something to do with it. We've already apparently gone to the NRL for a cap exemption because of the number of injuries so it would make sense. Either way, Benji will be embarrassed by all of this. Might be the kick he needs.

He can't drop him completely. Potter is caught between a rock and a hard place. Mounting injury toll and his best player is completely out of form and lacking confidence. With the amount of injuries, the team needs its most experienced players - Benji must play.

The benching is the kick in the pants required for being out of form. The message should get through.

I have seen stranger ideas work. Remember Hiddink not starting Kewell in the 2005 WC Qualifier. P*ssed Kewell right off and then look at the performance he produced. True measure of a great player.

My issue is that Fulton/Sironen aren't a threat realistically to Benji's spot in the side - and he would know that. There is no way we will persist with this halves pairing.
It would have worked better to give a young player like Brookes or Moses a go.

Worked at Souths when Isaac Luke was out of form and Nathan Peats started ahead of him.

I was hoping that losing the NZ captaincy would have been enough of a wake up call. Obviously not. Friday night will show whether there is still any fight left in Benji, regardless of the scoreboard. Come on, man, step up and show us you are worth keeping!

I'd like to see Benj get a run in the centres at some stage over the season. Give him a bit more space, a little less responsibility and the option to come in if he needs to or wants to. He's basically been playing like a centre as is, why not make it official. We need to do something to reinvigorate the bloke.
