Benji return

"I said to my manager I don't want to talk to anyone and I don't want to know anything until this (the contract release) is out of the way, out of respect for the Blues and New Zealand Rugby," _said Marshall, while wearing a Cronulla Sharks jersey, Queensland state of origin scarf, Real Madrid tracksuit and Indianapolis Colts underpants_.

I think it was stupid to not take benji. I have been a massive critic. But if he was going to come back to a minimum wage he is worth it. I heard he was willing to take 60k. Crazy not to take him at that price.

I think he would have a destabilizing effect on the rest of the team and we are better off letting him go somewhere else.

i think so too. i really dont know what he could offer us at this point in time, sure it would probably put more bums on seats initially but i reckon the flame will burn out pretty quickly. he's seen the pace of the game has changed and acknowledged its more to his liking.

hearing his press conference on way to work tonight in the car i was saddened to hear some of his truthful comments and what has become of this guy. i hope he goes to an nrl club and he can play out his career at a respectable level but he will always be a wests tigers legend.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if he signs anywhere for $60k then it will be heavily backloaded. No thanks.

Would he come back at that price ?

Someone should correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a big presentation for Robbie and Benji where they were both named "Wests Tigers for Life." Also the first players to have that title given to them from memory.
This might seem a bit full on, but in my eyes those words shouldn't be taken lightly

Benji was a club legend, but something about him coming back to league (in other colours) has rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe I'm being stubborn and don't want there to be any chance of Benji POTENTIALLY hitting '10, '11 form and tearing someone (or us) apart. Maybe I'm being too moral and believe he should honour his words and not play against us and just try AFL or professional lawn bowls or something.

I'm happy we let him go, we've moved on and have been better for it thus far and wish him all the best, as always, but seeing him back in another jersey in the same code will definitely be very strange and uncomfortable after all those years and the comments he made regarding 'not playing for another club.' From memory that was one of the reasons he was released early at the time.

I recon he'd be awesome with brooks

With a decent half like Brooks, Benji would be free to play his natural running game. I think that combination would be deadly.

I have no sour grapes with Benji wanting to come back to league, I'll admit seeing him in other colours would be bitter sweet. But I do believe we shoukd be entitled to some form of compensation, and I really hope the speculation about where he is or isn't going doesn't have a destabilising effect on us as a club even if he isn't coming to us.
We should move forward and leave him to his business the less we have to do with this process the better IMO.

how so?

played his best game in 3 years with Brooks
Played his best footy with Prince and Lui

oooohhh shock horror, he played well with a proper Half back all these times…...

give them man a half back, ull see Benji kill it.

Thing for Benji is, even a 60K, that is 60K we don't have for someone else like Ava, Teddy, Siro, Akauola etc. And bet your bottom dollar the value goes up if he has a decent year, we can't afford his old salary any more, that money is being spent elsewhere.

I agree with this post. I still don't want him back!

I sorta don't get it. We're talking about a guy who apparently passed up on $700k/year offer to stay with this team. He did that for a reason. What that reason was, I neither know or care about at this stage.

With the money saved as a result of his decision, the Tigers have been able to construct a winning team. They have also built a winning culture that some here believe would not have been as effective if he had chosen to take the money on offer and stay.

The Tigers are winning! Why are we even talking about Benji Marshall?

It wasn't just an off the cuff statement he made about never playing against the Tigers. He repeated it on numerous occasions, said he looked at guys like Mark O'Neil with respect because they remained one club men, said we are the only NRL club he could ever play for. And he said it again and again.

If your word means anything Benji, go and play in England, earn the big dollars for the last few years of your career, and maintain abit of self-respect.

But if you want to come back to the NRL in enemy colours, after all you have said and done, then stuff you!
