Too old, too fat and not good enough to play rugby – that's the stunning assessment delivered by ex-Wallaby Greg Martin on Benji Marshall.

Despite a host of NRL players strolling into rugby over the past decade and immediately dominating, former Australian fullback Martin launched a scathing assessment of Marshall's ability and declared him not good enough to play the game.

Speaking on Brisbane's Triple M on Tuesday, Martin declared: "What a spoiled brat.

"Benji, we don't want you. It was the dream of a lot of people to play for the All Blacks but you've got to be good enough mate.

"You're old, you're no good and you're too fat."

Despite Martin's less-than-flattering critique, the Kiwi league international is likely to switch to rugby next year after severing ties with Wests Tigers following a failure to reach an agreement on a new deal.

The NSW Waratahs are the early favourites to nab the 28-year-old but the Auckland Blues are also a possibility, especially if Marshall wants to chase his boyhood dream of representing the All Blacks.

Most league fans are not overly concerned about Marshall's departure to a rival code and don't believe the NRL should intervene to keep him in the game.

That's despite Marshall's manager Martin Tauber criticising the governing body for not doing more to retain his client.

"You would think that for someone that brings the quality to the game, the merchandising, kids enjoyment for rugby league that someone would have picked the phone up and said, 'Is there anything we can do to help?'" Tauber told Fox Sports.

"But we've heard nothing.

"He's already had a conversation with Izzy (Israel Folau) about playing rugby - they'd be a devastating duo."

The Waratahs have confirmed talks will continue with Marshall and a deal could be struck if the two parties can reach a financial agreement.

Marshall would not earn big money in Super Rugby but could top up his income with a lucrative off-season stint in Japan.

The Tahs will concentrate on re-signing dual international Israel Folau and wayward Wallaby Kurtley Beale before giving Marshall their full attention.

Teaming Folau, Marshall and Beale in the same XV would be a massive box office attraction for the Waratahs and give them tremendous attacking strikepower.

Paul Kent gave Benji an absolute rollicking on the back page last night I don't know whether its a personal thing between the two but it sounded like he knows there was something more too it than has come out and basically called him greedy and said the tigers should call him a taxi, the panel didn't necessarily disagree

That is interesting, because the offer from the club was very generous considering his form, thanks for all the high lights Benji, and good luck in union.

Funny how the only people talking Benji up are Benji and Tauber

He will flat out making the Auckland or even Waratahs side

Still reckon this isn't over yet , what's the bet he decides to accept the Tigers offer after all

I'm not so sure Happy, I'm willing to bet he already has a deal on the table somewhere else, why else would he be seeking a release? You dont seek a release to go to nothing.

You know I've had the same thoughts I don't think he will get a better deal in union unless he tops up with jap rugby, have there been any thoughts that he could accept the tigers offer but wants to play rugby also this might be an impass.

I'm not a betting man anymore , but if you could get good odds on Benji changing his mind I'd take it

Why do you think that Tauber has brought the NRL into the comments he has been making

They are playing games I reckon and when they see the offers from the Waratahs and Auckland Blues they will be back with a pen

Taubers clients have been known to change their minds in the past

I don't think so mate. I think things are going too far past that now. It's only my opinion but I'm starting to get the feeling this whole situation is starting to turn sour.

My greatest fear is that Gus gets into Benji's ear during the recording of the Footy Show, tells him he will be the face of League in Sydney's West, and entices him to the Panfers.

Playing outside someone like Soward, and on the back of a big forward pack, he may carve it up.

If he's not going to be a Tiger, then I want him playing Rugby.

For anyone interested the back page is being replayed in about 15 mins at 1 pm Kents spray of Benji is first up, I know he isn't a fav journo on here but it is interesting

Your probably right he would carve up with a proper half back but I really don't care where he plays if he doesn't want to play for the tigers why would you want a player that doesn't want to be here

Because I don't want him carving up against us !

And because I don't want our investment to be taken advantage of by another club.

Hopefully if he is granted a release, the Board is smart enough to include a clause banning him from playing with another club until 2016.

Lots of players seem to carve up against us remember Fafita ? Can't stop them all from playing against us, I see your point I don't disagree but I also don't care overly what he does from here on in just my opinion though I still appreciate yours

Home truths coming out In the media, maybe not warranted in some people's eyes but when you get paid the massive dollars and act like a spoilt brat, you have to cop it in the chin.
To me he's not worth it anyway and it's all about the dollars for Benji proof is in the pudding.
