Benji ya gotta go! Classic Opinion Piece

**Dear Benji Marshall, please stand aside from your Wests Tigers NRL duties. Now**

Dear Benji Marshall, I have one word for you. Go.

Seriously, just bugger off. Whak off back to your home town of Whakatane or Auckland or wherever it is you're heading next year.

Who am I to tell you this? Not a rugby league expert, not a club member and not a "stakeholder" in any sense other than the emotional sense.

What I am, Benji, is a fan. A fan of the sport of rugby league and a fan of the club you nominally still play for, the Wests Tigers. Remember them? Anyone who saw your disgracefully-timed YouTube video to Auckland Blues fans would have reason to doubt it.

We fans are important, Benji. We're always told we're the lifeblood of the game, and there's truth in that. So for my sake, and for the sake of hundreds of thousands of ordinary people like me, please, just go.

Benji, I used to love the way you played. I swear in all honesty, you had no bigger fan. From day one I loved your fancy steppin', thrilled to your tricky passes, gasped at the way you took the devil-may-care ethos of touch footy and turned it into a winning NRL strategy.

You were always a little error prone. For every flick pass that found a team-mate like Pat Richards in that epic grand final try in 2005, there was a pass that sailed over the sidelines. Touch judges learned to duck balls when the Tigers backline cranked into gear.

But you know what? That was easy to forgive. Once in a generation, you see a player like Darren Lockyer who can do it all, who can somehow pull of being both brilliant and machine-like.

That was never you, and fair enough. You were who you were. Some bagged you for your inconsistency, but not me. Life is about risks and you took them. It made watching you exciting. It made weekends exciting. Damn it Benji, it made life exciting.

But somewhere along the way, the odds shifted. You developed the no-look pass, a play about as low-percentage as your average breathalyser reading. You also became predictable. You threw inside ball after inside ball without ever attacking the line.

To be fair, you suffered from the lack of a decent number seven outside you for much of your 11 year NRL career. With Scott Prince you won a premiership. When Robert Lui came good in 2010, you steered the Tigers within a point of a grand final.

With no top shelf halfback to relieve the pressure, you were forced into a different role. You developed a decent short kicking game, but the fact that it became your job to set up the play, rather than making the play, never suited you. It left you looking confused, disjointed and ultimately disinterested.

In short, Benji, you failed to mature as a footballer. You were brilliant, but you were not adaptable. That's the last word on what could have been one of the great NRL careers.

CALL THAT A SPRAY? Check out some of best ever sport sprays

This isn't personal. I always liked you and still do. So last night Benji, I thought I'd give you one last chance. On a bitterly cold Sydney night, I braved the elements and the grossly inflated seven dollar beers, and joined the even more grossly inflated crowd of 8,393 at the Sydney Footy Stadium.

What a letdown. What an unbelievable letdown. As things stand now Benji, you are no longer a first grade footballer. Your head's not there and your heart's not in it. As for your defence, you are officially a turnstile. Perhaps that's how the NRL came up with 5,000 phantom fans.

The road from here is clear, Benji. If coach Mick Potter doesn't sack you this week, you must sack yourself. I've read your autobiography, and I remember how hungry you once were. The Tigers have some great young halves who are hungry like that now. You owe them a chance.

More importantly, you owe your club. The Tigers could be a respectable team in 2014 if they blood young Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks in first grade for the last three games of this dead 2013 campaign. Give them a go. Stand aside. Act like a loyal man for the first time all year, Benji.

Oh, and thanks for the memories. They are good memories. But they are fading rapidly with every game you play.

The drums are deafening, all belting out the same tune, but will the club do anything??? Really as badly as Benji played last night he was not the major problem. The major problem was simple, we just dont have the size, power or strength to repel a side like the chooks, nothing new and will probably haunt us again in 2014 . Although playing Benji in any grade for the rest of the year is a pointless exercise, he dosnt want to be anywhere near a football field

I think it's Potters decision not up to Benji. One thing I will say if you are picked Benji please play your hardest we know your not at your best and that can be forgiven. As fans we are upset cause your simply not putting in! You wear the our colours you wear them with pride please.

'I sold my personally signed ten year anniversary training shirt of Benji Marshall… some idiot paid 23 bucks for it.... there's your legacy mate'

LOL

It's disrespectful.

Sorry but its beyond a joke. He has been with us 10+ years. I don't care what he has done. He does not deserve the shit he is copping.

Disagree 100%

Was this a letter taken from the papers and sent bya fan or is it an editoria?

I have to say, that the destruction of this man who loves this club is astounding.
He isnt playing well…no problem with that.
He has been one of our worst contributors...no problem with that.
He made a poor decision to appear in a rival jersey...no problem with that.
He is being attacked on a personal level...big problem with that.

In the last month he has been accused of being greedy, a sook, a dog, a thief, a tyrant, a bully, a petulant child, an egomaniac, a defector, having no respect for the game...or the club...or the fans...or his team mates...or his country and heritage. He has been labelled a germ, a cancer, a grub, a pathetic footballer, an even more pathetic man, gutless, heartless, a coward, just about every four letter curse word you can think of. There are also claims of tanking games, match fixing and of never being a first grade footballer in the first place. People have said he ran this club to the detriment of other players careers...destroying many and establishing a boys club that helped bring down CEO's and coaches and has left a legacy of pitiful performances, embarrassing losses and shame. Legendary halves are lining up to spit on him including Sterling and Johns who were never ever fans of his in the first place and they are doing it through every medium possible. Now people are saying he should be prevented from entering the 200 club and if he does than they will boo his arse off the field for the rest of the year...this is on top of the various petitions that people are starting up and sending to Tigers HQ.

I find it astonishing to witness such venom thrown at a bloke who has done little more wrong than try to secure his future and experiencing a severe drop off in form on the field. Where was this level of hatred when Mundine labelled RL as being a racist organisation? When Tuqiri, Sailor and Rogers defected to union and then shat on RL in the press? When SBW snuck out of his contract, his club, the game and even the country at midnight? When Jamie Lyon said he was retiring and walked away from Parramatta only to sign lucrative deals almost immediately overseas? When Hunt and Falou walked away from the game and became poster boys for our biggest threat?

Benji is not playing well...his time is up. That is plain to see. There are excuses such as injuries, poor coaching and having no halfback and they are legitamate. He has also lost his passion and hunger it would seem....hardly capital offences but if you read what is being said you would think he is a part of the crew who beat women or cause havoc on the grog like Bird, Ingliss, Watmough, Lui, Carney, Friend, Dougan and Fergusson. He hasnt belted people in nightclubs, stuck his fingers up players backsides, tried to bite opposing players ears off....he is just playing poorly and had a contractural dispute with his employer. Yet he has been lynched from every quarter.

I wish Benji the best for his future, I hope he continues to play football and rekindles that spark. I hope he can get over the last 2 months of his RL career and doesnt entertain thoughts of self harm. He has experienced a massive overreaction and his fall from grace has been extraordinary. For mine he does not deserve this backlash.

I am not a soft bloke but his treatment really gets me down. It is sad in many ways. It has always been my contention that Marshal not only invigorated this club, but was one of the few who saved it from self destruction and erradication. It was a jumbled mess when he hit the scene and through his performances, the club became a media darling, an exciting proposition for fans from rival clubs and a sponsor attracting juggernaut. He has been the face of the Tigers for 10 years and through his deeds on the field, in the media and off the field in his charities, he has always promoted this club in its best light (bar the fracca with the yobs at Maccas). He has won a premiership, captained his country, won a four nations, won a world cup, captained the all stars, won the golden boot, was the face of Rugby League and got us to 2 other semi finals series after courageously coming back from devastating shoulder and knee injuries that should have ended him. He has a highlight reel that no other player comes close to. He has done things on the field that no other player could and he stayed loyal to us when his form and the enticements from other clubs were at their peak.

He is not an immortal calibre player, but is certainly revered in RL and more importantly a Wests Tigers legend. He adressed us the fans and spoke from the heart when announcing his decision to leave. He did not read a prepared statement but humbly sat there and looked us in the eye for the duration. He also wrote an article saying the same thing for the wider audience. He loves this club and its fans. He hopes to one day return in some capacity. Whilst it may be true his actions are akin to giving management the finger...I disagree entirely that his aim was to do so to the fans as well. He does not deserve to be spat on by his own supporters as he plays his last games for the club that may not even exist if it were not for him. Just let him go, say thanks for the memories and wish him good luck for the rest of his life. Continual bashing of one of our favourites sons is making this club look foolish and will hurt us financially into the future...in a corporate sense, a televisual coverage sense and in an attraction of marque players sense.

"Now people are saying he should be prevented from entering the 200 club and if he does than they will boo his arse off the field for the rest of the year."

i really hope this isnt the case.

have to agree with a lot of your post stryker. it has gone way too far in my view as well. i hope that as a fan base we tiger fans can regain some of the dignity that makes me proud to be a tiger fan and just let it go!

Cant see how people continue to back Benji. You pay your hard earned dollars to watch the team and him play, and he doesn't turn up. Check his stats, last week as an example, he did NOTHING. He is a disgrace. He has no regard for the club or his supporters, why have it for him. GO BENJI the last I see of you the better. Past endeavours mean nothing.

I am as frustrated with Marshalls form as any Tigers supporter.

I agree with much of what Stryker has said and I can't agree with everyone now bagging him. He is not playing well. He has made some poor decisions re his departure. He has also been a very influential Tigers player and team representative.

I don't think he will, or should be dropped from the side. It will not change the club's outcome for the 2013 season. I hope that what is happening, re his continuing inclusion in the side, is the club is respecting his past contributions and will allow him to leave with some dignity.

Not an excuse to abuse or boo him. He is human too. People need to start treating him like that again. He tries, he's just past it.

Theres a job for you at The Daily Telegraph

Do you go through a lot of keyboards?

piquet and stryker those two posts were excellent.
Styrker, my feelings on your post would be:

"He isnt playing well…no problem with that.
He has been one of our worst contributors...**little** problem with that.
He made a poor decision to appear in a rival jersey...**MASSIVE** problem with that.
He is being attacked on a personal level...**huge** problem with that. But then again, that jersey thing forced me to rethink things."

It is tragic that the legacy of such any such brilliant footballer should diminish quite like this. Most sad of all is that he is not the victim of circumstance - he has brought it on himself.

Yes I am personally against the constant berating of the man, however if he doesn't put in any effort then he is susceptible to a bit of stick. I was there on Monday night and he has dead set just given up. I purposefully watched only him over a 20 minute period on and off the ball. He has no interest and if anyone else did the same they would come to the same conclusion. There is definitely a lack of respect there.

Let's be clear here: the fall of a former star is always played out in the media. Much of this anti-Benji noise is coming from the papers and commentators, who know such controversial comments will sell papers. They will ride him to the ground if it makes news.

Sure fans turn on players, but fans can be fickle and focus on current results.

I don't think anyone will argue that Benji leaves a tremendous heritage with Tigers, same as nobody will argue that this season has severely dented his legacy.

I would guess that much of the emotion, sometimes spilling out into public frustration, is simply because people wanted more for (and from) Benji in his final year. They want to send him out a hero. But facing facts - the guy is not playing to first-grade standard, he has made questionable decisions about his future and treatment of the club, and he's on his way out.

It reminds me of Tim Brasher, who should have played out his career with Tigers but through some silly decisions (from both parties) ended up in Nth Qld, falling off a step ladder and retiring.

Benji will surely be remembered a unique and special talent who couldn't finish his league career the way he wanted. Not all players can go out like a Lockyer, still in good form (and helped by a good team around him), with laps of honour at multiple venues.
