Benji's coaching skills

We should've beat the Knights in round 1 & the warriors a few weeks ago.

These games will hurt us.

I hope the lads don't lose morale and keep turning up, believing in what we're trying to achieve.
We’re not far off being a decent side, but we’ve all seen it end poorly so many times. I hope they stick with the process it seems to be working.

4/8 after 8 rounds. I recall predicting this in the off season. A pass mark.

What I’m happy with - defensively the team are showing up for one another and the coach. Galvin said post-game there is an emphasis on winning ugly this year, I love that.

Need to improve - we are severely lacking some punch in the forwards. Not sure how he does it but we need to improve our go forward or we’ll miss the eight. Too reliant on May playing insanely right now.

I agree that we need some more punch in the forwards but I also think that we are developing an attacking style that favours deception over brute strength. It will take a while to develop but I think that Benji is trying to develop a "Back to the Future" type of attack that is less structured than the way most of the NRL is playing - but has enough rapidly executable structure to enable eyes up footy.

We definitley need a pair of bash brothers and someone better than Seyfarth on the other edge; but, I think that Fast and Mobile with Footwork is where forwards are heading. Ciraldo and Benji are leading the way in where I think the NRL will head next in attack. Check the Deep Dive to see where I think it is going (well Benji and Hodgo anyway).

I’ve noticed the last two weeks our method is to shift early in the count to break up the defensive line a little. Then we try to punch through the middle. The problem comes when one of those plays ends up in a dominant tackle and the whole system breaks down. We are one or two players short on the edges, realistically we don’t get much out of yardage from Twal, AD, Seyfath, Naden, To’a or even Sam Fainu this year. Ok to play with mobile guys but they have to contribute something.

We have two hookers who can absolutely slay teams off quick play the balls so we need to find players who generate them.

And Parra....
At best, We'll be looking for those few wins at the back end of the year.

On the money but it could be more about timing and postioning than capability. I have been watching our attack to figure out where we are heading with it as we aren't playing anything remotely like the other clubs. At first Galvin was overplaying his hand a lot and I thought at first this was him. However, as I have looked back at it I think where we are heading ibecomes a little clearer (although still a little murky). I think the combination with Sam F is coming together and there is a time and space understanding there (that will only improve) that allows the sweep/X/Y plays to be executed while allowing the halves to play what they see. This hasn't occured with Seyfarth on the other edge. I don't thak that is from lack of effeort on his part - I don't think he has that same football sense gets him in the right place at the right time. What we need is that Kikau/Romey clicque on that edge.

I also think that we will need to shift Galvin at some time to make space for Latu when he returns from injury. How that affects the timing and execution is yet to be seen - but he defintiley won't run the sem lines or be as active across the park as Galvin - so how does that affect the attack.

I guess it is going a long way to get there - but is the issue Seyfarth or is it that the coordination, in contact, is still developing. Seyfarth appears to be the guy that will do exactly what you tell him - he just gets there a little too early, or a little to late at the moment. He has the ability to run the right line; the question is does he understand when to run it?

He’s very uncoordinated. Bellamy would give him a simple role off the bench. That’s Seyfarth’s ceiling.

Which brings it back to your post that restarted the thread today. Someone better is most needed on the right edge, which with Alex then covering a middle/edge bench option, it will certainly improve the pack and fill part of the void left by Klemmer.

Yep. Add Haumole Olaukautu to our current roster and we could be a top four side. Obviously depth still a big issue too.

I thought his coaching lost us round 1 due to conservatism but it also showed superior tactics in the Brisbane game where he out coached Madge.
Our attack is clunky still but the defence and especially the discipline has improved. New recruits have made a huge difference but Marshal is also doing well. As I said on Monday, how he handles Galvin will define his head coaching credentials for the year…as long as they win their share.
Yeah round 1 was dumb. We should of won that easily. Talyn didn't run once. The coach must of told him not too. Talyn playing his natural game would of won that game..

Maybe I am flogging a dead horse, but the biggest problem I have with Benji this year, is the bench rotation use this past month, particularly around the hookers.

Seeing Tallyn and Hunt finally enter the field once the game was already lost against the donkeys and the same with Api similarly belatedly interchanged last Monday after Parramatta had bolted.

Yeah API was drained on Sunday. I know it was a close game but rather a fresh Talyn over API when he's done that much work. Talyn needs 30 minutes either side of halftime.
