Benji's coaching skills

I’ve always said I don’t think he can coach but I’ve always been rooting for him to succeed.

Now more than ever, I’ll always be a Benji fan.
I really hope Benji proves all the haters and everyone wrong and wins a comp with the tigers as a coach. Make everyone eat their own words etc

Did you see how slow we were to get back the last set before half time? Api & 4 other forwards weren't at the play the ball by the fourth tackle.

Meanwhile we had had 2 completely fresh players on the bench including one that can be used as a middle edge forward.

I am not convinced Benji can coach, and the mates completing their glory days tour aren't doing enough to help him.

He needs to do some theoretical work about how to be a good coach.

Do some classes, learn about different types of athletes, learn about goal setting, part practice vs whole practice etc.

Ciraldo has a tonne of experience but he's been known to be a student of coaching. He's shadowed different coaches in different sports, spoken to sports psychs, done research on high performance athletes.

There's no doubt Benji has gotten a shortcut to where he's at. Like Ricky, it seems like he can really bring the boys together and make them one but I hope he combines that with more knowledge as well.

Winning a comp isn’t a goal of his at the moment surely?
Pulling together this playing squad given what they are going through and getting them to consistently perform is where he’ll be seen as a success or failure.

There is only two relevantly consistent teams in the competition at the moment. There are good teams that have not been performing well under well regarded coaches. The best teams will emerge when it counts.

I am unsure of Benji's exact coaching ability as it's too early to tell but I will stand by it was a huge mistake to have the '05 boys as his only coaching aids.

This is the one point i agree with Galvin on. We had an opportunity to give Benji some real aid, an experienced assistant but we didnt.

Last week everyone was praising Benji's class during a mentally draining week for the club and fans.

They lost a game against Parramatta who had all the ball (especially early), all the calls and got the bounce nearly every time.

Last week, they nearly (and should've) shut out Newcastle.

Over the weekend, Melbourne got proper spanked (at near full strength minus Grant mind you) against a Dolphins team that we beat convincingly and who had started the season 0-4.

Not every loss is a cause to throw the toys out of the cot.

Someone compared him the other day to Ricky Stuart and I think that’s pretty accurate. He hasn’t really shown much in the way of being a tactician, but he gets by on emotion and instilling pride in the jersey. One of his greatest strengths, even going all the way back to when he was a teenager has always been his charm. He’s an extremely engaging, charismatic dude, and it doesn’t surprise me that the players want to play for him. I’ve been pretty critical of him, but I’m desperate to see him succeed. If anyone is going to guide us towards being a successful side, it deserves to be him.

Big few weeks for the club and Benji. Win next week and we're 4 - 4 and likely in the 8 - a better start than I had expected before the season started. Lose the next 2 and we're 3 - 6 and season is likely over and the pressure will be immense.

BIG game next week at Leichhardt. Sharks are good but I don't think it's an unwinnable game by any means. Desperately need a few players back but not sure we will get any unfortunately...

Does anyone think Benji should have addressed the Terrell May hit in the press conference. It could have been done not by criticising the referees but in support of recent crack down and player welfare. I think there was a real chance to eloquently say the ref missed a big moment in the game.
I would have started with, “do I start to coach my players to stay on their knees after that sort of contact and wait till the replay to play the ball. Prehaps I should have.
That was a big miss by the ref, I saw it from 150m back in the northern stand.

There was a moment in 2022 where the Cows were travelling ok but were still soundly beaten by the chooks early in the season.
Todd straight up in the press conference spent the whole time talking about how we are seen as a lesser club and those calls always go the way of the bigger clubs.
Guess what, Cowboys had some favourable calls for the rest of the year…

Do you really think that Benji Marshall needs to learn how to set goals? Are you actually saying that?

Everything Ive seen from Benji as a coach has highlighted how weak he is as a leader. Its all just 'chur bro'.

He was never a leader on the field, he was the golden child of the team, petulant kid that ran to Rugby when Potter tried to send him to bed without dinner, media jobs fallen on his lap, daddy Sheens got him his current job and he never ever ever gives 2 shits about the results in press conferences.

The guy is weak. He fails every single week to put a rocket up his team during a game. God know what he says before kick off, cause whatever he is or isnt saying he can never deliver a team on game day fired up and ready to play.

He needs to go. His respect earned for a flick pass in 2005 was 20 years ago, his respect as a coach is zero.
