Benji's history of crucial errors

I know there are a lot more examples where Benji's brain explosions cost us the game but this is what I can remember off the top of my head.
\
\
2010 Tigers vs St George (GF qualifier)
\
\
Leading 12-6 at halftime, we had numerous chances to close off the game late in the second half in order to get a lead of 13-6\. Even when St George made it 12-12, again we had many chances to set up for a field goal and gain a 1 point lead but Benji kept going wide and throwing the ball around. We missed all of our chances. Soward took the opportunity the first time they got down in our end of the half and buried it. We lost and got knocked out of the finals 13-12.

2011 Tigers vs Warriors (GF qualifier)

We led the entire game and with 90 seconds left on the clock, what was Benji thinking when he got caught with the ball on the last tackle giving the warriors a chance to have one final crack at us. Yes, Robbie put him under pressure from dummy half but why couldn't he simply kick the ball (just like Ellis did yesterday against Souths when he ended up with the ball on the last under pressure) The warriors scored of that next set and we got knocked out of the finals again due to Benji's lack of being able to finish off a game.

2012 Tigers vs Souths

I think EVERYBODY in the crowd was hoping for a field goal with 7 minutes left on the clock and a full set of six up our sleave. We could have hit the ball up once or twice and went for a field goal or even attempted to get a repeat set…But no! Benji's brain went AWOL again and he crabs across the field and put Ryan in an awkward position and we got bundled into touch....THAT was the turning point.

I don't want Anasta at the club but I think we could use his brains because clearly we have a history of not being able to close out games. SURELY, Sheens would have discussed this with Benji by now. There will be some of you that would be saying "leave him alone, he sets up tries etc"....Well that's what he's paid to do. He HAS to set up tries but theres no point in setting up those tries if you're going to throw the game away later. Its a simple adjustment he has to make but he keeps stuffing it up. If we had a Lockyer, Thurston, Cronk or even Anasta on those situations, we would have won each game.

Benji Marshall is a great player when he gets it right....but BOY!!! He can get things sooooo wrong sooooo often! Play smarter! For God's sake, PLAY SMARTER!

Three memorable errors in 9 seasons, that's a pretty good strike rate. Pretty sure Billy Slater has had at least that many too.

While you're at it, compile a list of crucial plays that has secured a victory for us. I'm willing to bet that list will be at least 20 times as long.

We are not competitive without him. Slater threw the World Cup to NZ coincidentally to Marshall. Yesterday was dumb but the good far outweighs the bad

Imagine a driver so good he leads the Indianapolis 500 for 499 miles every year then runs out of petrol before the finish line .
EVERY YEAR.
You think he might realise that apart from being better than everyone else that he was missing something to get him over the line.
Or maybe not…..

Seems as though everyone in the whole crowd was thinking the same thing before it happened.

For Benji to slow it down and get the repeat set or field goal. Not to throw it away on the first tackle.

If everyone else could see it, before it was going to happen. I dont get why he cant see it!

Yeah sure he rushed it a bit & probably could have been more patient but who's to say he would have potted the field goal anway??

No guarantees offcourse, but a few hit ups would have eaten up more time and all of a sudden everything changes including what happens next.

The problem was he didnt even think about it! Thats always the problem, he never thinks like a Lockyer or Cronk or even Soward.

For those of you that said, he wins us games too…Whats the point of painting an entire house and giving up before finishing the last bedroom?

Finish the job Benji!

Maybe we do need Anasta's brain! Cause we're definitely lacking upstairs.

Mmm do we care to remember that play in 05, u no the one were he fields a thurston kick, beats a few tacklers before taking off down field to pull out one of the most spectacular grand final passes of all times to that bloke oh yes pat Richards who pushes of tacklers to score, now there's a turning point!!

Agree and disagree… And CB is right. Slater has probably done it just as many times, twice for Australia?!

Seriously though, Benji was never gonna take a fieldgoal from 20 out... He only kicks them from Halfway!

Is still a low percentage play if Ryan scores?

Its inevitable a player as heavily involved as he is will figure higher in the error count, he's touching the ball more than say a winger or backrower….not fair to single him out

x2

This sort of comparison does not tell much, I would prefer to see an analysis of his overall effectiveness
e.g. how many games we won due to his shear brilliance (sometimes just because of it) relative to errors/decisions he made.
IMHO none single player (eg Lockyer, Thurston, Slater, Cronk etc) would be better than him at the Tigers.

You're the type of person that will just vote Labor again and again and again because they did something worthwhile 37 years ago and hold onto that memory and continually justify their actions of today because of that.

That moment was 7 years ago and if you think that justifies multiple errors that cost us games for the rest of his career, you are waaaaaay to easily satisfied and don't have the required goals and high expectations that is needed to win a comp! As supporters we should demand the best from our players that includes complimenting on a job well done and being constructively critical when they let us down due to stupid things. Im not talking about mistakes like drop balls, forward passes etc. Players don't mean to do those things. They're human and it happens…Im talking about bonehead decisions....for example........ trying to run around a wingers or running to the sideline with only a metre to work with in the rain only to get bundled into touch......Chris Lawrence!

He's become sort of like the LeBron James of the NRL.

Great player.

Spectacular player.

Best talent in the game.

Fails badly when it really matters.

Benji is lucky he has that 2005 premiership under his belt or he'd be under incredible pressure right now. I.e. "Can't lead a team to a title" etc etc. He avoided all that by having so much early success.

The crazy thing is, those "big errors" mentioned above were all easy stuff. Just percentage plays at the back end of games. It doesn't take a high RL IQ to know NOT to run it on the 6th with 3 mins to go in an elimination game.

I love the bloke and am forever greatful for his time as a Tiger, but it would be dumb at this point NOT to address these mistakes. He's 27 and the greats like Lockyer etc don't have this record of failing when it really matters. The next 24 months determines whether Benji gets remembered as a legit great of the game like Lockyer or he gets remembered more as a natural freak like Phil Blake.

He's at the stage of his career where he needs to start to show he can carry a team to a GF / Premiership and not make boneheaded mistakes. He's 27\. No more excuses.

Well bloody said! Agree 100% and im glad you understand my point.

No Benji this team gets the spoon.. history of critical errors sure thing ,probable the most frustrating player in a team that I have supported and shear magic to watch .I am just enjoying the Benji ride as I doubt I will see someone like him in my life time the good the bad the ugly all in one!

I remember Bunji winning us a lot more games than the ones he has lost.

Absolutely.

But he has got a bad record of failing when it 'really' counts. I.e. a GF spot on the line / must win games.

He's won us a tonne of "shark park on a sunday" or "canberra at LO " type games.

But those "play this right and we can make the GF " or "play this right and we are through to next week's final" type games he has a bad record. That's not disputable. For a player of his talent, his record in the really big games (aside from 05 with Prince leading us) is not flash. There's no real way to sugar coat it.

As i said, the next 24 months will write his legacy. If he wins three comps or makes three grand finals, NO ONE will remember or care about this stuff.

If he retires at 32 with one premiership and no other GF appearances, history will judge him harshly IMO.
