Best NRL Marque player?

Call me biased, but I actually think the Tigers have the best marque player in the whole NRL in Benji. The way the bloke plays, draws crowds, represents himself and lives and breathes the club is better than anyone else in the NRL that I can think of. What he did for Leyton last year was one of the best things I've seen ever on a footy field… including Dwyers hit on JWH!

Smith, Hayne, Inglis, Thurston, Gidley, Orford, Gallen, Prince, Price, Carney, Slater... all great players but I for one would pick Benji every time. The only person I can compare him to is Lockyer, but he is past his prime now nor has the flair that Benji has.

Even Farah as our 2nd most prominent player is better than most across marque players across the NRL.

Would love to hear peoples thoughts? Is there anyone that you could say you would want at the Tigers more?

Cannot disagree…he's a credit to his family and the club.

For one so talented, young and popular he kept a very level head. I'd say his injury history has helped here.

Club legend - imagine young WTs fans in 30- 60 years time reading about him, wishing they'd seen him play, we are privileged

100% HT

This is a no brainer - On and off the field Benji is the ONE.

I can think of any other player that gets and DESERVES the plaudit that he receives.

No. The best player in the world will do just fine.

I think Ink's right about his injury history keeping his ego at bay too.

1\. BENJI MARSHALL
2\. GARETH ELLIS
3\. ROBBIE FARAH

How lucky are WESTS Tigers…

I really don't think that there can be any doubt about this atm. I just hope he can continue to improve as a player whilst keeping the same attitude that he has.

The funny thing is that Robbie is also unbelievable. Gareth Ellis has to be in the same class of player and person as well.

It might be his injury history that has helped his attitude. It might be that he came from a tough family environment however he had a good mum. It might be that he is simply a good bloke.

But Slater got awarded, the most entertaining player by some crap as awards!

However, I do think Hayne would come close to the "marquee" player thingy. He is popular not just amongst Eels fans but many really young fans out there. Also, you gotta admit he is a freak and I daresay a bigger freak than Benji TBH. However, I would have Benji over Hayne anyday due to his maturity as a player whilst Hayne cannot work with his team.

So, my thoughts are BENJI :sign:

Hayne isn't as liked as the media would have you think. That so-called media anointed "excitement machine" isn't as complete a footballer as Benji, doesn't play 80 minutes, isn't as mature and doesn't have the cohesion with his team that Benji has. I have a few Eels mates who all confessed they'd happily trade Hayne for a good halfback.

Interesting point made by Ink. His injury run would have brought him to earth and realized how easily his career could be finished due to injury and as a result he's probably grateful for the years he has got out of football thus far. The guy is an allround class act.

All my friends are teenagers and they all love Hayne. So I'm just saying it as a teenager's point of view that Hayne maybe more popular than Benji amongst teenagers. However, I dont know about "old" people

100% agreed! Nail hit on the head with that one. When he decides to hang up the boots I'm hoping he is with the club in some capacity.

A Marquee player should be more than just a great player.

Greg Inglis has been a great player and in form is a joy to watch. But he mumbles incessantly and sounds mentally challenged and thereforis not that big an off the field asset (throw in assault on partner charges to) Hayne is in the same boat but with coaching by a media outlet he could improve.

Benji, Lockyer, Campbell. These are the true marquee players of the game. They make yards for the code on and off the field.

Yep, good call Ink. Benji is still improving with age and maturity too, who knows what magic he will produce out on the field this year :master:

Completely agree Smeg. I don't think Hayne/Inglis are the characters that Benji is off field, with both the TV commitments and the charity work.

In terms for representing the club off-field, Benji is a true champion.

Campbell is one I didn't think of. Great player and a guy who I think is majorly underrated. Does plenty of field for the indigenous community.

I agree with the comments about Ellis too. In most clubs, that bloke would be a walk in captain! It's almost a shame that he is in such good company.

Agreed with all said. He is awesome on and off the field. Gus Gould has stated a number of times that Benji is the most marketable player in the NRL.

I have walked along plenty of beaches and seen lots and lots of children, (girls as well as boys) doing the Benji sidestep.

Have never seen anyone doing the Hayne train/plane.

Benji, Farar and Ellis and in fact all of the weststigers have been a credit to the league since Sheen's has taken over. The only exception that I can think of is Lui.
