Best NRL Marque player?

All my friends are teenagers and they all love Hayne. So I'm just saying it as a teenager's point of view that Hayne maybe more popular than Benji amongst teenagers. However, I dont know about "old" people

I have walked along plenty of beaches and seen lots and lots of children, (girls as well as boys) doing the Benji sidestep.

**Have never seen anyone doing the Hayne train/plane**

Benji, Farar and Ellis and in fact all of the weststigers have been a credit to the league since Sheen's has taken over. The only exception that I can think of is Lui.

That's because those kids would look ridiculous nose diving into the sand!

My point is that people who don't follow Rugby League much don't realise the way Benji plays. Hayne is definitely more freakier than Benji in actions but it is Benji's mental freakiness which gets him attention these days in contrast to sidesteps, flick passes etc. 5 years ago.

Young people don't realise that side of Benji and thus think of Hayne as a more popular person.

In saying that though, teenagers are not the people who spend money on games and it is the adults who pay for the tickets to get the children in and I'm more than sure that every adult would pay $100 extra to see Benji rather than Hayne.

I know i'm biased but how can you even compare Hayne to Benji?

Hayne had one ripper of a season. That is all.

Benji on the other hand has won a gf and led his country to victory several times.

Time for Hayne to step i would say.

It wasn't even a full-season Defiant!! It was just 12 or so weeks of magic (incl finals)!

Hayne started 2009 at 5/8th and played like a busted until he got his confidence up during Origin & was moved to fullback for the Eels where he blitzed it!

As soon as both attacks & defences worked out the deficiencies in his game he was nothing more than a good/decent player in 2010 (aside from a brilliant game or two)!!

Benji has produced 10 times more "freakish" plays than Hayne has in their careers - and has done so via a vast array of diverse attacking skills!

Benji's legacy will be that his skill level will ultimately change the game - as the next generation practise skills that were unheard of before this kid hit the scene in 2003!

Hayne is merely a big, strong, fast modern prototype - his kicking & passing games are totally hit or miss!!

Thanks for posting that Benji youtube link Underdog, what a great watch. I reckon that clip pretty much sums up why Benji should go no.1 on my marquee player list. Hayne has his place on the list but has gone missing way too often when the eels have been looking for their number one man to do something special. Plus Marshall's off field achievements put him in another "league".

So in my humble and un-biased opinion:

1\. MARSHALL :master:

2\. ELLIS

3\. HAYNE

4\. FARAH

5\. LOCKYER

Where do the likes of Slater, Thurston, Lyon, Prince, Burgess, Inglis, Carney, Civoniceva, Smith etc sit on your list deano?

Another question is which club has the worst marquee players???

On that note - who are the current Warriors marquee players following Price's retirement & Tate's move - I can only assume it is Vatuvei & maybe Hohaia (as NZ stalwarts)??? Maloney had a great year - but is far from a marquee man yet!

And please don't tell me it is now Mateo!!

Same goes for the Dragons - is it Gasnier/Cooper again - or have Soward & Boyd taken the mantle???

Newcastle obviously have Gidley as one - but who is second?? Simpson has retired & Mullen has failed to meet expectations!

And trying to identify the Bulldogs so-called marquee players is nigh impossible given their spending spree & lack of dominant players in 2010! Ennis is far from marquee quality - so is it X-factor recruits like Eastwood & Pritchard - or a promising kid like Idris???

 I was going to tell you it was Mateo, until I read the 4th paragraph!

Red, I'm thinking another player from the Eels went to the Warriors as well as Mateo, can't remember

who, can you help?

It was Inu Mrs T!

Surely another winger cannot be a marquee alongside big Manu!!

I actually know Feleti socially through local friends - and he is a great talent!

But watching his game at 5/8th & Captain for Tonga versus Samoa in 2010 - his propensity for poor decisions & over-playing his hand - belied a player who is yet to be coached to understand & mature into a defined role within his team!!!

Ah, Inu, that's right! Memory is shot!

I was at the Tonga v Samoa game and Mateo couldn't set up a try to save his life! They had heaps of opportunities

but he just couldn't do it! That said, I reckon he could be a really great player given the right environment,

dedication and commitment.

Agreed Mrs T!

Cleary has been excellent with the likes of Maloney & Lewie Brown - so he may be able to give Mateo the direction & focus to be the player that he clearly has the potential to be!!

Cannot disagree…he's a credit to his family and the club.

For one so talented, young and popular he kept a very level head. I'd say his injury history has helped here.

Club legend - imagine young WTs fans in 30- 60 years time reading about him, wishing they'd seen him play, we are privileged

100% agreed! Nail hit on the head with that one. When he decides to hang up the boots I'm hoping he is with the club in some capacity.

Had to sign up especially to respond to this.
**I Totally Agree.** We will talk to our kids and grandkids about Benji.
My grandfather tells me about times when Yow Yeh would get the ball and the whole crowd would rise. Benji has that….except he is much, much better.

For me, he is the No 1 Marquee player: easily the most exciting while also being one of the most accomplished. (I am not biased; Thurston is also up there and I'm surprised he hasn't been mentioned more....)

For us WT Fans Benji can sometimes be nerve-wrecking but for opponents he literally rings the panic alarm whenever he gets the ball. He is too unpredictable to ever confidently defend.

Supporting the Aussies vs Kiwis I panicked whenever he got the ball....and for good reason.

And can we please not talk about him hanging up his boots....ever.

Where Benji and Robbie can win you a match in a flash, its Ellis for me. 100% pro on and off the field, just dosnt play a bad game and the ultimate role model every club needs. He brings so much to the club. Once again both Benji and Robbie are once in a decade players or maybe even better but Ellis set the platform for these guys to weave their tricks

Well said bigsiro and great first post!

I think the thing he has over Thurston is his attitude. He never wanted to leave the Tigers to play elsewhere and signed his massive extension without any debate or fanfare. For me, that's what seperates him from the blokes like thurston and put's him in the Lockyer category.

He truely loves the club, the team and the game. He is a bloke who is a top echelon player and also carries that off-field. You could stake the clubs entire reputation on him without a second thought, which I don't think you can really say about Thurston.

Based on everything (on field performance, media duties, etc) Soward would be number 1 for St George, if it was strictly on field I would've had Darius "good ay?" Boyd, but he's not usually one who fronts up to the media etc in the lead up to big games, Soward is, ditto Gasnier.

As for the Dogs? Who would you say is their marquee player? Josh Morris? Jamaal Idris? They are really light on big guns for next season.
