Best & Worst WT Signing Ever?

As far as underrated signings go, Paul Whatuira tops the list. Its criminal how often this guy is forgotten. Should never have left.

Thank god he did leave. He had one outstanding year but by the time he left he was very ordinary.

Eddy Pettybourne is hard to top really. He was good for Souths, came here was hopeless then left mid year.

I remember Field having some good games for us, same with Hill and Seers. Not as good as they should have been but the likes of O'Hara, Harris, Pettybourne, Graham and Jobson achieved nothing. Matthew Rieck I thought was going to be a gun for us but iirc injuries crueled him too.

McCracken had us in 2nd and was playing like the gun he was that season when he had a career ending injury and we didn't recover until 5 years later. I don't think he deserves a mention. I reckon if McCracken stayed on the park in 2000 then Field, Hill and Seers also don't get mentioned in this thread. He's actually become quite underrated over the years probably because he's such a tool.

Yeah Pettybourne sucked bigtime. Nick Graham was truly woeful though.

Best? Princey and Hodgo for a tie.

Anyone remember that young prop from the UK that came over for a year. Spencer was it? Real short lightweight prop. He was a massive dud.

I remember going to a rare early game back when I didnt go too often and I think it was THE one game where troy wozza had a real good game….remember leaving thinking, this guy is gonna be real good

Best - Benji. Our club was basically a laughing stock when he arrived and his on field performances also translated to positive media coverage and massive profile lift.

Worst - So many to choose from but I'll go with 3 that haven't been mentioned yet - Sam Harris (ex union star that had one decent league game in his career - against us for Manly and we signed him)

John Carlaw - was playing with the Balmain Tigers at the time of the merger but some muppet resigned him. Terrible player.

Lee Murphy - came from Saints, Posdibly, the worst defender I have ever seen play first grade.

Haha the crap players outweigh the good players

Owen Craigie

Craig Field

Michael Gillett

Nick Bradley Qalilawa

Ben Reynolds

Blake Lazurus

Matt Groat

Plenty more though

Couple things wrong with this side. I liked Troy Wozniak, very harsh to put him in a worst signings list. Not every player we signed in the early yrs was a bum, some of them really had a go. I remember a game against the Dogs at the Showground, the Dogs had a scrum on about halfway, and from the scrum Vagana went straight through, and Wozniak chased him down out of the scrum and put him into touch 5 metres from the corner post

And John Morris, really? I know he gets the Johnny Cronk treatment, but the blame there falls on Sheens. Morris was only doing what he was told, it wasn't his fault. He gave 110% every game he played and didn't miss a game in 3 yrs. If you're looking for a hooker in that side, idk how you overlooked Iosefa.

Even Paterson is questionable. He went alright when he was on the field, then almost needed to have his finger amputated. Scored a great try at a crucial time for us against the Sharks.

Overall, the worst signing ever as far as expectation goes, has to go to Nick Graham. He was apart of that group of new players we signed in 04, Hodgo, Payten, Richards, Prince and Sattler, and he played about 5 games and did nothing.

Yeah, I'd have to go for Graham as worst - mainly because the guy could play, but did less than nothing with us. He was good for the Sharks for a number of years, but basically took our cash and 'retired' for the next 2 years, trotting around in reggies. Piss poor.
As for the best - I'd have to say Prince. He was definitely the main reason for our success in '05 and was one 'gamble' that really paid off for us. Was shattered when he left.

I'm surprised at the negativity at Wozniak. Don't remember him having a bad game, and on occasions he looked like a superstar. No idea why he didn't kick on. Was as fast as any winger, so for a back rower he has promise. Destroyed Cronulla one day, and what about his individual try against the Warriors…length of the field.

Had a hot girlfriend as a junior too.....just saying

I always remember Wozniak being good. Must have had a lot of injury problems to retire so young. He would have only been 25 when he retired?
