Better Coach or Better Players

I hear you.
I feel like playing again. Stop all this talk, leaks, coaching crap, contracts that are worthless, spoilt brats and an incompetent club.
Let's just get good players! Let's play decent football.
Agressive heart on sleeve footy.
Sometimes, I should say more often than not, I get a better product following my local club playing park footy.
Cobar I absolutely love your passion for the club, the same passion many, many of us have for this team and club...
In answering your question in regards to coach or players, you dont need to be a rocket scientist to know quality players in your roster coached by a quality coach is what wins games and premierships..Melb Storm set that standard as do Penrith...
I want both those things quality roster and quality coach as do others...
Having said that, before we can even contemplate them we need to get the festering stench that has been accumulating in the place for many years out, from top to bottom..
We have a bad reputation and that is what is hindering our progress,we also need to stop the place being a boys club that has been in place for many years..

I think a great team with an average coach wins most days. Fittler and Meninga are not supercoaches. Bellamy had the luxury of taking over a Storm team that already had a great nucleus. This was a smart move he made. If a Bellamy came here, he would need to bring one or two with him or we wouldn't even make the 8. This will be the same for any coach that comes, we need better players to improve our position on the ladder.

I see everyday other clubs announcing signings but not us what's scary what if all this silence is because they are not getting any topline coaches say they are interested and furthermore not many top flight 1st graders are showing interest ! Sure well geta few assistants wanting a step up and a few players on the outer elsewhere .The Api and Papalii deals are great and I hope they are locked in but we need about 4 more signings of same ilk.
Announce that and you'll get a lot of coach interest
So true.

Why would they? If they're top flight they probably already play for decent teams.

Also, they'd have to deal with certain 'favourites' being selected automatically week in week out in spite of being frequently dogshit performers on and off the field.

I don't believe the favourites line. You must be talking about Brooks. He has just been lucky in that he is an average half but we have a lot of player who are below average.

We've also signed Api and IP. Those two are not top 5 players in the comp but definitely top 5 in their respective positions.

Brooks is on his way out. If we can get some forwards coming through we can improve a lot.

I still think we need a supporter/owner who is willing to loosen the purse strings and do some post game deals with players.

A certain winger that a major sponsor is a really big fan of too.

I reckon he deserves his spot. I think he is overpaid but it's not a killer to the club.

I reckon Ken will get dropped it we get a good winger coming through.

We have two wingers who are pretty good are hitting the ball up and they can finish really well in certain ways. The problem is they are both slow. We don't have anyone with electric pace who can score when they get half a chance.

Spot on, wing is the least of our troubles

I think it's a double edge sword because some elete players follow a good coach whilst others look at the roster & the $.
Better Coach or Better Players

Great Question - Thanks for asking Cobar. I fully support your solution - get the best roster and work on pathways

I think Jack Gibson summed it up perfectly when he said

"To win a championship, you've got to have a nucleus of five or six real tough, hard competitors. To win anything, the team's got to think tough and that infiltrates into the individual. You've got to have a tough leader.“

So in my mind our initial investment has to be:
A (as in singular) strong and hard Captain. (Sorry Cobar - that rules backs out - at least all the ones with combs in their shorts). I don't care what position he plays really; however, given our current situation I would pick them from the piggies so they can lead by example. I'm thinking a Ray Price type of captain. In the middle he should be supported by an Igor Randall and a Blocker type with a bit of Max Krillich, Billy Smith and Keith Barnes in the support roles. You can build off that type of nucleus and have a competitive combination.

Jack also said

"Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.“

I agree, so what makes up the rest of the team is players hungry and wanting to play for their mates. So spend big $ on the core five or six and let the confidence grow in the rest of the team. Sure pick talent but develop the pathways as long terms projects to replace that nucleus and fill the supporting roles with confident players. Why are Melbourne successful - long term stable nucleus with groomed replacements and a bunch of handy player that they rotate in and out.

The next investment probably doesn't cost much - but getting the front office to function is critical. If our CEO and chair are good at selling merchandise and raising money let them crack on; but, ffs put a gag order on them. What we don't know though is if the leaks are part of the strategic plan to shape recruitment or incompetence. It would be great to be on the inside!

Finally when you have a confident team with good drills then you can finesse the plan. Until you have a developed side a Siebold or similar is a waste. Until then I think we need a hard but motivational coach; mmm anyone seen one of those recently?

I trust that the leaks and turmoil are a distraction for what is happening behind the scenes and we have an announcement in the near future of a two or three hard piggies to build off

Cheers n Beers

Good summary.
Rebuilding that pack is paramount. Api and Papi are a good start but why haven’t we added to their purchases in the past number of months?

Hopefully Matamua proves a star and is fast tracked....

Definitely need to add a few more though.

Because we signed those players in November and December last year. Once we took the field this year, other players were reminded just how much of a rabble we are and have chosen to stay clear.

Guys like Matamua, Pole and even Stephano, cannot be relied upon to form the nucleus of our pack. They have to be brought on slowly yet surely, complimenting a battle hardened starting 6. At the moment, that battle hardened starting pack will be Api, Papa and Joffa. We need at least 3 more

This has always been the Sheens strategy.

Have experienced leaders to inspire, lead and show the young players how to win.

Bradley Clyde mentioned it in regards to when he debuted as a 17 year old at the Raiders under Sheens.

He needs to do exactly what you said Stryker and recruit as such.

Yeah we got the gun juniors coming through but we need the battle hardened players to show them the way.

Interesting question....

Without a good coach you simply don't attract the players you need to.
