Probably going back before most of you were born but John Elford who played for Western Suburbs was one of the hardest hitters I have seen. Plenty of blokes spilt the pill having a look to see if he was coming.

Garry Jack. ..Best cover defender bar none. Beaver Menzies had good technique when he decided to mix it- could never work out how he managed to play 300 games without putting a kink in that pristine fine china nose of his TBH.

Jack is the best FB defender I have ever seen as well.

He was genius at showing them the sideline and then nailing them a metre out and HARD too!!

The amount of times someone would make a break and i wouldnt even get nervous,u knew ol Jimmy would smash em!

The best cover defenders I have seen would have to be Ron Coote and Steve Mortimer. Junior Pearce would also be up there - and someone who gets remembered more for scoring tries, but who I saw save heaps, was Andrew Ettingshausen.

I think Trevor Gillmeister is the best all-round defender I've seen since 1980.

Lincoln Withers also used to pull off lots of big hits, surprising me constantly for his size.

I think Josh Jackson is probably the best 1-1 defender going around right now. Slightly ahead, due to age, of Beau Scott.

ET was a player that improved his defence as the years went on. I reckon he was hands down one of the best defensive centres i have ever seen. Great technique and hit harder than he looked.
Marc Granville was a good hard defender but the best will have to Brad Clyde.
If there was anyone who you model how to play lock forward it was Brad Clyde. A massive influence on my game when playing. This bloke had it all.
The other pound for pound defender you can not get past was Geoff Toovey. He had the best technique and not many got past him or over him unless you were Adam McDougall who just stomped on his head.

Peter Ryan was both a big hitter and technically a great defender.

In todays game, Boyd Cordner & Alex Glenn can deliver both aspects well.

At the Tigers, Kyle Lovett could become a player who can fill this role with another year under his belt.

Sorry Watto but Lovett is no chance. Decent workload but will never be a big hitter or best defender. His production dropped off huge the last 12 games. His is an average player at best however i hope he makes me eat my words next year or 2 but i doubt it from what i have seen.

Yep, Jack would be right up there with my favourite Fullbacks. His cover defending was second to none. I'll never forget a couple of screamers he pulled off bringing down Eric Grothe in full flight. Just brilliant.

Belcher was a far better fullback than Jack ,actually Dale Shearer was far better fullback than Jack

Come on Happy, opinion on whom is better is one thing, but "far better" would have them approaching immortal status as Jack was a bloody good fullback.

Charlie somebody playing for the bunnies used to hit real hard and Terry Randall used to have a few looking out.

He was very good and a lot of fun to watch. knickname of " Snoozer".
Ron Coote, Artie Beetson,and Big Mark Harris, weren't bad either.
Biggest hitter/defenders over the years.
