Agree @jirskyr and @momo_amp_medo.
As much as we need our attack to click, we need much more solid defence than that. It was honestly annoying to watch us stand back and wait for the opposition, in a fair chunk of the game.

Said it in another thread, there's too much trepidation from the team and it's why I'm not a fan of certain selections - including our starting forwards or our rotation - as we tend to have no line speed or urgency due to those couple of little problem areas and other teams are exposing this.
Though our attack looks better(or flows more easily) on that left hand side Talau and Kepaoa are unfortunately letting us down and they've not shown any redeeming qualities at this point. We're hoping for our spine to click but when our support players are this poor, what do we expect.

How was Joey?
Never caught all the game but there's been some positive feedback on him and Kiah Cooper that I've read.

Joey played ok and seems positive played a team game ..rekon a call up next week .

Cheers @Snake was hoping he'd take this chance to work on both his own game and helping lift the team. There's nothing worse than seeing players lack motivation.

He was motivated and Set up 2 tries

He won “Oporto’s” man of the match

Wasn't tested defensively and didn't go looking for the ball. He won't get a call up until injury strikes.

The attack directly impacts the defense though. Our big men got us down there a few times to start the game and we fired blanks at the end of each set. Our attack builds zero pressure and as a result, puts more pressure on our defense than we should have.

But yeah we shouldn't have conceded 36 and the more this happens the more pressure will build on Maguire. I still don't see an identity on either side, just some talented players and I'm not sure he's in charge of recruitment to take credit for that.

Change the coach as much as you like, Brooks will remain the same.

There you go thats a start ...sitting on half way and watching Brooks catch pass and not engage the line nothing has changed my mind this team is GOING nowhere with Brooks at 7.

If he engages the line, then he should have given the outside men early ball, if he gives them early ball he is doing nothing. I thought he showed a good mix in attack today.

If your 5th tackle kick is from inside your own half, your kick options are very limited. That would be on the forwards.

Engaging the line makes the defenders also engage which in in turn opens gaps in the defence hence creating gaps in the defensive line which the Jet ect can expose but hey let's just catch and pass and the defence just marks up.

Your post does not seem to be related to mine, why did you quote me?

Did not mean to should of hit the reply button .

Our attack is disgraceful, Brooks is only part of the problem, but a constant, the reggies halves are crap, I know why they want Hastings, Madge has a lot to answer for

Is it just Madge ? Surely the management team who oversaw recruitment and development for the last 5-10 years need to be seriously reviewed.

Don’t think you’re telling the full story here. Yes he was lethal in attack because he was given room - might get space against the Cows. But he was not put under any pressure defensively. There was absolutely no indication from today’s game that he’d be any better defending.

I definitely think we need an attacking coach and madge should be focusing solely on our defence. You look at the successful teams like the eels, raiders, storm , roosters, panthers and the major difference is the speed of their defensive line. Ours today seeing it at the ground is horrendous. We just wait for them.

Madge needs to bite the bullet and either blood Simpkin or play Liddle for 80 and use M'Bye as a lock and/or a second fullback in attack. we drop 3 gears when M'Bye goes to 9. slow service and zero urgency.

He didn’t have any trouble defending when he needed to.
Can’t help it if the other team is too scared to run anywhere near him.

Sign someone that can work out attacking structures as you are becoming an embarrassment ! 5up and kick is getting tiresome the bomb is a percentage play and you won early today with that ..but it just kept happening . All I have seen from this team for over a year is a group of individuals that have no idea what to do with the ball ! If you have no idea sign someone that does!

5 up and kick actually works if you have hard running and effective defense. Especially with AD’s bombs.

My opinion is he is incapable of defending against fast teams. He cannot move quick enough. The fast attacking structures will undo him every time

we were in that game for 80.... the whole 80.

We werent demolished up and down the park. Without errors, and 6 again penalties we were doing quite well field position wise...

The big difference was, when we were within striking distance, our players passed the ball to someone else hoping they could make something of the situation. The Eels played as if they were each trying to make options for the next man.

Mentality.

Its called structure and this team has none.

Did you watch the tries?
None of the Eels tries were 'structure' tries. They were playing very unstructured. We saw Moses try to take out about 5 people with his stepping, half commiting/non committing to break up the line.

The eels got OFFLOADs and they got playing for their teammates. They had a good attack which broke our defensive structure (IMHO, which seemed quite good for once).

That style wont help them against Canberra who will strip the ball from the Eels, nor will it help with the Storm/easts who will defend better then us.

Joey looked switched on. Scored and had a hand in a few tries. We need him in 1sts this weekend.

I really don't think Madge is being honest with himself or fans after watching the presso

He says he can see things coming together ...how ...our attack is under 9's at times and isn't NRL level at all ....and if Parra hang on to the ball in the 1st 15 minutes of the 2nd half it's a 40-50 point blow out

This club just chooses to ignore reality ...and thinks that many fans don't have a clue

We were reliant on Taylorball with a magical kick on the end .....that's it ......with a 7 that organizes jack squat every set ....and that's acceptable

I was thinking during the game that we've just gone back to Taylorball. Fergo and the newy guy last week kept us in both games.

Don't worry about the attack so much - we managed 22 against one of the better sides. By far the most points Eels have conceded this year.

Worry first about the absolutely brittle goal-lime defence.

I’m not worried about our attack at all. Our defence is what cost us today and in Rd 1 and 2. We need to fix that.

This new era game its all about attack attack attack things have changed get with the program or perish ..the coaches that do no adapt are done .

It will be a few years before it clicks

or they change the rules again.

Very true.

Madge is an excellent leader of men and a strong motivator...but he is not a tactician.

His best sides he has always had a very good tactician as an assistant. Siebold white anting him seems to have impacted him enough though that he has moved from appointing the best assistants to do tactics, to just appointing people he trusts who have no shot at deposing him.

The problem for us is that there are no real structures in place. Under Madge, we are near last in efficiency in opp 20. We rarely ever look threating in opp 20, even when we have repeat sets.

100% the teams who play what they see are winning. Brooksy and Daine Laurie are contributing as they are eyes up footballers. Unfortunately our leaky edges are not up to defending on the back foot. You just can’t concede 36 and win.
