Blair ‘trained too hard’ for Tigers

I love these type of stories… It explains alot about the Tigers and the past 5 years of BS that comes out of Concord from the management to the playing group.

Make a play for Bellamy and Clean Em All Out!!!

Agree Watto. Our playing group haven't achieved anything remotely resembling success. They have no right in determining who our Coach should be.

Serious question did Blair make the kiwis squad this year? or last?

Edit- yes I remember he played end of last year.

Blair got the nod over Waerea-Hargreaves.

Agreed - if Blair was not playing this weekend, this article would not exist.

There have been ten similar articles the week. Dogs let Thurston go. Cowboys let Thaiday go. Happens to every club. Let's get over it. I won't be shedding any tears if BMM pulls a grand final with some mob.

Anyone remember our backup half Ben Reynolds? He was a great trainer too, totally professional. Could hardly play footy either.

Gee you're drawing a long bow here, Ben played the early rounds of 2004 off the bench and then got injured, there were more up and coming players that filled his position.
In regards to Blair ending up at the Bronco's it appears that there are multiple stories but none of them accurate, early in Blair's Bronco career when he failed to set the world on fire he bemoaned at how quickly he was pushed out the door at the Tiges, now it appears that there was already a willing party to take him off our hands courtesy of his wife and Uncle Wayne!.

Blair is playing better this year as he should - look at the team around him. Same deal in Melbourne. He's no game winner but he helps good teams win games.

If anything, all the articles from ex-players and coaches over the last year clearly illustrate we're a way behind the top clubs in terms of culture/procedures/expectations of players.

I'm glad Potter is sticking the boot in now as he was resolute when he was employed here. He should be clearing the air about what happened because the board members never let his side of the story be leaked to the media. He has future prospects to consider too and I'm sure he'd love to coach again in the NRL. With only one side of the story out there it doesn't help his chances any.

We're doing a lot of the right things in replacing old people and old procedures, starting right at the top. It's not pretty and it's bloody risky investing in youth the way contracts are protected in the NRL.But the past failures lay with the old group in much the same way our current failures from 2016-17 will lie with the current group.

Says a lot about Potter TBH, if it happened for 2yrs under him and the other players didn't dig in shouldn't the coach sort that out?

Also indicates why the improvement in Marty and Sue occurred, Blair's influence made them more professional to be the players they have started to become.

If I remember correctly Potter had no power to do anything other than turn up at training - says more about the toxic board that was running the show. I think this shows why the club is where they are at now - we finally have a board and staff that is willing to change the poor culture that has existed for the last 10 years.

I read an article with the above title in The Australian today. If true, it is real criticism of the work ethic of the Tigers.

The article commenced with the words:

"Former Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter has opened up about Adam Blair’s defection to Brisbane, claiming the work ethic of the New Zealand forward put him offside with some of his ex-teammates who claimed he “trained too hard for them.’’

Unfortunately I don't have access to the article online, so I can't post the full transcript. If anyone has access to the Australian on-line, it would be worth posting the full article here. It is very damming and would be of great interest to members.

I can assure you the fact he trained too hard for them is 100% true! Cannot confirm if that put him offside with other players..
Adam and his family are very good friends of mine and his work ethic was too good. One time under potter we had been flogged heading into a bye round and Adam expected to have a hard flogging during that week and be made to train really hard, instead, the team were given several days off and Adam trained by himself for a couple of days

Blair was a little bit better for the Tigers than the hype suggested, and hasn't been as good for the Broncos as the hype suggests. Probably gone from 5.5 out of 10 to 6.5\. Pretty much what you'd expect for a decent but not phenomenal player going from a bad team to a good one.

And. That. Is. All.

Completely agree. He still isn't a worker. He still just makes a couple of good plays a game. He still doesn't carry a team forward. I thought he was good for us in his last season. Once he was moved to prop he was good. He was never great though. He was nowhere near the level of for instance Tamou, Scott and Thaiday in the GF.

A source very close to the team told me no one got along with him and was as lazy as anything …. And to add salt into the wound, we are paying $250,000 of his contract still this year.

I always thought he should have been our starting prop, For a few reasons…
1: Because he was miles ahead of Keith for pace
2: Because being in the middle would stop him from hiding out wide.

I'm not a football coach, But couldn't understand why we continually tried him in the back row when it was obvious to all and sundry it wasn't working.
- Wasted 2 years of him out there....

B lair said that Bennett wanted only 2 things,
Run the ball hard and defend your patch.
Did Sheens try to over complicate things by playing him wide and messing with his mind,
He is a front rower. :brick:

Blair is not a kid. If he felt he could not fit into the WT playing style, such as it was, he could have asked for a release. Instead he sat back, took the cash and, for the most part, underperformed. Must admit I was pretty happy to see Blair and his new Bronco mates miss out last night

Blair was purchased to be an 80min back rower, because of his football skill & brain. You don't pay a forward the kind of money we did, to sit on the sideline for half a game, every game. We trimmed him up to do this job. Was it the right strategy or not? Go Weststigers!

It was the wrong strategy. He isn't that sort of player. He is a prop who is pretty good but he doesn't have a high work rate throughout the game.

Blair's done best for Bellamy and Benny; both "my way or the highway" style mentors, but not so good for Sheens and then Potter. Maybe he just responds better to these kind of coaches. Whatever the reason, he's obviously happy with the move, we've trimmed our cap problems a little and there'd be more than a few fans happy he's gone
