Blake Ferguson

Broncos had the Thoroughbreds group helping them for much of their existence. Every member of the fulltime squad had a deal on the side….which isn't illegal, but at what point does a group called the Thoroughbreds, specifically created by businessmen to assist the club cross the line?

It would be safe to say that if the NRL uncovered all of the dodgy under-the-table deals and sweeteners that certain clubs are doleing out in order to build a superstar roster it would be mind-boggling.

Cash-in-hand payments would be near impossible to trace.

Yeah… I get a giggle out of people who complain about the football business's that have clever business people running them!! That's how they have the extra "room"
That and 30,000 paying members a year helps..
As well as high profile backers... Who get high profile names (not just the blue wiggle) to the games!! The hype around the burgess boys and thier mom... Models like souths build money as opposed to ours which just limps along!!

We have our share of high profile supporters
Dawn Fraser ,Michael Clarke , Barry O'Farrell etc

Pity none of them are Billionaires

Or high profile!

Not 100% sure how the 3rd Party side of the salary cap works but surely it doesn't matter how many members a club has, you are only allowed to spend the same as every other team on players. Would love to see the documents on how Souths, Roosters, Broncos etc manage to have this extra "room" under the cap. Shonky.

Melbourne Storm had an extra "room"….and we all know what that contained.

In theory to qualify as a bona fide 3rd party agreement the payment should come from someone not related to the club.

And the payment is not dependent on the player playing with a particular club. An example of an absolute 3rd party payment would be a contract from NIke to wear their boots or a fox sports media contract.

They tend to allow payments that do not require the player to keep playing with say the tigers to keep getting paid, there is loads of grey, if a player is receiving a payment from the thoroughbreds, it can be assumed that if he left the broncos the payment would cease, however if the contract does not specify this, it is allowed as a third party (usualy)

It is a very subjective thing.

Thanks for trying to clarify the 3rd party situation Goose. Still seems very open to rorting though. What is the deal with the marquee player payments that a club can have, is it restricted to just 1 player?

He was interviewed today on TV he said he had no approaches from any NRL sides

He could be FOS , but I find it strange that no clubs have approached him yet

There is $300k marquee allowance outside the cap

But that is per club not per player

Would you believe someone like this peanut Happy …. I think your FOS tag is the more likely.
A faction of Souths Fans think he's a done deal.

Nobody has approached him….I'm guessing they approached Khoder.

I don't think he is that good to be perfectly honest - a few games does not warrant 500k+ for a winger.
You would not have anything to do with Mundine or his puppets.
Just need a loose cannon to come to the club - bit like putting a fox in the henhouse with all these youngsters.
The club has always prided itself in having decent people - role models etc. what does he promote????
Not good. Even if he had the talent - no guarantee on a regular basis - he is not worth the risk.
Stick with what we have for 2014 and go for a good second rower for 2015

Well in that case Khoder approached him so as predicted he is totally FOS

FOS?

Seriously, sensitive talks are traditionally confidential and any disclosure by any party could see negotiations terminated.

The idiot is the media guy actually asking the question!

Blake will more than likely be playing RL in the NRL by Round 1 in 2014.

Going by the media you would think that this is the case. If so, kudos to Souths for magically finding a way to fit this gumby under the salary cap.

Out of all the wayward players in the last few years (Carney, Dugan etc), Ferguson seems to have the least amount of brains out of the lot of them. He can't even speak for himself without Mundine helping him out. Guessing he will never grow up. Even if he doesn't get done on the indecent assault charge pending against him, can't see his future in the NRL looking too promising TBH.

I reckon we should have a crack at him.

He has apparently little interest from others, there is some bargaining sway there.

Yeh, he's as dumb as dog-sh t….but he may well stay off the grog and he could end up an even better player than he already is for it....and pull his head in at the same time

He's a match winner...lets go for it!

Match winner maybe.

Team morale/and or club wrecker….probably more likely.

You would have to include so many clauses into his contract that it would take an author just to write it up. Of course you can't have too many gifted players in your squad but all it takes is 1 d#*khead to bring a team undone also. And he has demonstrated time and time again that he is definitely one of those.

Is he really worth the risk?

Absolutely.

Get Tigers officials over to the Mundine fight and get on his side. We would wrap the deal up the next day!

AND YES HE WORTH THE RISK!!!

Was never going to be anything but with only what?…a few weeks or couple of months training under his belt

Deserved to get snotted...these wannabes just add to the sham that boxings become
