Blocker: Tigers need an Ellis-style enforcer

Ellis was a hard man , but was hardly an enforcer ..not in the same mould as a Harragon , Carroll ,Gillespie or Les Davidson when you would be looking out of the corner of your eye for them

Yeah, I can’t remember him being a hitman. He wasn’t an enforcer. Just a hell of a footballer. Ran unbelievable lines.

Clubs need to start following the Raiders lead and looking at the ESL. Not Alex Walmsely though. No 30+ plus players. It’s bad enough signing them from other NRL clubs.

This is all we need from our players as well. We don't need them to try and be hitman if they aren't. I like our pack. We have some big mobile hard running forwards. We have a great set of halves. Our outside backs also look better. Our big problem is at 9.

Kills me to say this but Moses is a class above most. Couple of touches today have been special as was one defensive effort to save a try. Still a downhill skier who hates the tough stuff but could have a breakout year

Edit: Sorry wrong thread!!

He knows what he is talking about in this area.

Absolutely agree 110%. He knows the Engine room backwards plus Blocker is a very good game analyst. Name ONE, just ONE Ex Prop forward in the Commentary team today for either Network 9 or Fox? Harragon was eye Candy for the Footy Show which had nothing to actually do with Footy. I'll save you the trouble - the answer is none. He is employed by Fox because of his knowledge of the game. His knockers are the ones who actually have no idea! And before the smarties start claiming Geyer, Hindmarsh, Tallis as Props they were all 2nd Rowers! PLUS they are not part of any actual Commentary Team though Tallis might be called on for Origin or the occasional Brisbane game.

As for whether or not Ellis was an enforcer I think Blocker himself said as much that Ellis wasn't like the typical hard men of League but rather that he was uncompromising and made opponents look twice.

Great post.

Agree totally.
And re Ellis - the modern 'enforcer' is still there - he just can't throw punches any more. Ellis was one of them. If you had a choice of running at Ellis or Fulton, you'd run at Fulton all day! And I agree - Wests Tigers haven't had one of those blokes since Ellis. Musgrove may just develop into that sort of player.

You don’t need to be throwing punches to be an enforcer. Woods has achieved a lot in his career but as a prop there was more he could have done. As Phil Gould said during his game commentary once.. he’s the sort of guy you would invite to a party.

Or as Jack Gibson once said about a Qld SoO prop, whose form reversal surprised Jack,..and I thought he was just another fat kid running around the park? ?
Just as a half makes opposition second guess so too should a prop, but for different reasons.
