Blocker

you don't have to be a rocket surgeon to be inspiring.

it doesn't matter that Blocker isn't every fans bestie.
if he's having the desired effect on the forwards
and "they" like him…
whats the problem?

There was a fair bit of negativity in here about Roach's appointment for WTs. It was seen as another job for the old boys club (from the Balmain side no less) and he would hinder our players with nonsense and generally just be a pest from a bygone era.

But it seems he has found his niche, glad to have him on board! I'm sure he enjoys being able to give back to a club he loves.

He was a goodplayer for a reason. Dogma, attitude.

I think I will start rating forwards on how much they make it personal, their animal. Full stop. Just like I rate a 5/8th or half back on the 5th tacle options and kicks (play making).

It isnt enough for a forward to take the ball up running. They have to want to and be seen to be running over the top and pulverizing the opposition because they want it that bad.

Not sure why so many people put so much stock into someone elses opinion of a person. If you're a fan great, but for me, listening to him for so many yrs on 2GB and his hopeless commentary, it leaves me very skeptical on how much credit to give him for our season to date.

I think of it this way. Being on radio and having people listen to your every word and direction on a subject, is far different from motivating someone where smarts means little, attitude means a lot. Head knocks have come out recently as an issue. do you think he is a guy on radio with a few head knocks? Then give him a break.

Just dont invite him to be the representative of the tigers in a public forum, he may very well have what it takes to be the background man who motivates your players and gives them a bit of dog.

Obviously the players don't agree with you …

(thought id post the actual article, as I couldn't get the link to work)

**_Wests Tigers pack hail influence and emotion of Steve Roach_** _STEVE Roach brings himself close to tears with his pep talks, but his mere presence has some at the Wests Tigers scared into submission.\
\
The Balmain legend's arrival as the club's forwards coach in 2014 seems to have injected some bite back into what was a toothless pack last NRL season when they finished second-last. The man who carried much of the load in 2013, Aaron Woods, has been in career-best form this year and — with the backing of Keith Galloway, Marty Taupau, James Gavet and Ava Seumanufagai — has helped the Tigers outmuscle some of the game's biggest packs in South Sydney and Manly.\
\
They now sit third on the ladder with four wins from six games and have the chance to go further when they face fellow surprise packets Parramatta on Easter Monday.\
\
“I think we're working as a team in the forward pack,” Woods said on Wednesday.\
\
“It helps when myself and Keithy go off and then get blokes like Taupau and Gavet and Ava come on, we don't lose the momentum going forward so it's really good.”\
\
Woods said Roach's ‘old school’ mentality had rubbed off onto the Tigers' frontrow.\
\
“He's definitely old school. He doesn't even worry about the backs, he doesn't even talk to them I don't think,” laughed Woods. “He just comes in and just talks to you. When he's talking to you, it looks like he's about to cry and the goosebumps get up.\
\
Woods says Roach’s old school mentality has rubbed off on the Tigers’ pack.\
\
“He's just real passionate about his rugby league.”\
\
Teammate Adam Blair agreed, but said ‘Blocker’ Roach — banned in 2008 for abusing referee Tony Archer while NSW Origin assistant coach — still had the scare factor.\
\
“He comes in and when we do our video sessions, he stands in front of us and we all get around Block,” the forward said.\
\
“He just gets there and yells us things and everyone's eyes are up. We don't say much — he does all the talking and we just shake our heads.\
\
“He's a scary guy when he gets going but everyone respects Blocker and all the boys love to get around him. We love having his chats.”\
\
Woods, hoping to earn a State of Origin recall with his top club form, said it was nice to hear the plaudits for his once-struggling side but admitted more work was needed.\
\
“If someone gives us a wrap, we're happy for it. But we don't really buy into it. We're just more worried about getting the Tigers on the front foot.”\
\
Both Woods and Blair were confident 22-year-old Joel Luani would step up in the absence of hooker Robbie Farah, who is set to miss up to six weeks after dislocating his elbow.\
\
Meanwhile Liam Fulton sat out Wednesday's training session with a suspected shoulder problem, but the forward was confident he'd be fit for Monday's round-seven match._

You People putting crap on Steve Roach are of your heads.

He's good a Prop forward as either of our former clubs have ever produced, arguably the best.
Why would you not want him on board?

Seems it's the regular ex-wests whiners doing the usual though.

Roach was a good Australian front rower and I'm sure he can impart good tips to the forwards.

However, his quotes in last Friday tele were he rambled on about LO and then went on to associate that weekend Brookvale game as great for the fans while ignoring or home match at Campbelltown was pathetic.

The impact of Kidwell is really understated.

Yrs of listening to Tommy's horrible commentary made me resent him to. Not to mention that annoying ''cattledog'' rubbish. But i guess thats cos he played for the Magpies huh :unamused:

I wonder how many here saw him play. He was some player. I never saw someone like Artie Beetson play but Blocker could carry a team. He had an unbelievable offload. I haven't seen a more skillful prop forward. There might be better metre eaters out there than him but when it comes to skills he was the best I've seen.

I'm sure Blocker will be crying in his hankie after reading negative comments by some really astute people on here.

Block wasn't in Beetson's class, (very few - if any - were), but yes, he had a pretty good offload. He was also pretty quick when in the clear and was definitely as aggressive as any prop going around - that did lead to a number of 'dumb' penalties though. But the same could be said for all of the front rowers of that ilk - Beetson, Sattler, O'neill, Donnelly etc and in the modern game, Waerea-Hargreaves.
