Bon Jovi for This Year's Theme

I will agree Bon Jovi has more credibility than Wes Carr. Wes Carr was a winner on a glorified karaoke contest which I feel is an insult to the music industry that unfairly gives vocalists an opportunity at the expense of other musicians. I agree his song was a pathetic advertisement for the NRL. But I expressed that my opinion was going to be unpopular, just take it on face value mate. I understand people are fans of the band, but I don't agree that it is a good theme, and I have never found anything they have done to be groundbreaking or entertaining.

Don't take it personally, I don't think you're deficient for liking them mate! You can't be too bad cause you're a Tigers supporter :sign:

I get what you were saying, but looking at the bigger picture, BJ is probably the biggest act to be used by the NRL since Tina Turner. It is a step in the right direction from the NRL's marketing dep. Not having a shot at you in any way for not liking them, it's a matter of personal opinion.

I agree with NRL's logic. Bon Jovi have a great deal of credibility and it will appeal to most footy fans as they are a extremely popular band.

no no no no noooo….

I think its an average song, and was probably cheap?!

Aussie Bands like Jet or Powderfinger should be used!

TBH I'm surprised AC/DC, Jet or even Wolfmother haven't been bandied about more often.

agreed…. I dont understand why they wasted money on an AD Campaign which is specifically designed to take a swipe at the GWS Franchise, rather than promote how great our game is!!! Once again, very narrowed minded by the NRL...

I thought it was a boring song that lacked punch and a heartbeat. I'm guessing in time the song will grow on me but for the moment I feel that they could have come up with something a bit better.

Lol at those deathriding this campaign before it has even been viewed.

This song and campaign will work because:

#1 Whether you like them or not, BJ are a world renowned band who have been on the scene for years and still tour the world playing to packed out stadiums.

#2 Bon Jovi appeals to women and god knows the game could do with a greater female attendance at most games.

#3 The song has a good beat that will be easy to combine awesome footage with the music. It'll work well with the quickcut scenes of big hits, Marshalls step, freak plays etc….

#4 Although I prefer different tunes, it is a huge step up to Thomas Kennealies poem, Wes carrs lame pop song or the Hudu's rather soft effort form previous campaigns.

#5 It does take a swipe at the gayfl who after all are definetly trying to destroy our sport

#6 Lastly I believe that it is a B-side track which isnt very well known at all. This will work because from now on, whenever anyone hears the tune they're going to associate it with Rugby League. After all, isnt that what marketing is all about?

I don't think any of us are death riding the campaign Stryker, they're just our personal opinions. I don't like Bon Jovi and not a fan of the ad, but I have conceded that it will probably be very well received campaign by the public. It will probably be the most successful advertising drive they have had since Tina Turner.

I agree Chris, but I can't see this Lame song growing on me….. The NRL should just get advice from the master..Sir Bonstonker....the man is a genius.

The NRL can have that lame song as long as the Wests Tigers pick up this video and song as their theme song of 2011....

Now listen again to Bon Jovi's song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT8CULvY9Rc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and ask yourself what pumps you up more

You can't get any more mainstream then JBJ - campaign will be a winner. Terrible song though IMO.

Makes sense now why Rusty was quick to get them in Souths gear

Bon Jovi, I can live with. What does worry me is if Aliens clip posted is the proper NRL Ad, they have put Israel Folau in it (2.00min). I wonder if AFL are going to put a league player in there ad this season?

We almost did it too..

we just made them hold the jerseys up in front on them - back in dec 2010.

pretty ordinary song. maybe with an edit it will be okay.

this quote in the media write ups haunts me.
"The song was written with international sports marketing in mind and has already been used successfully in the US in association with the NFL."

have to admit that I cant get the song in Bonstonkers' clip out of my head.

It's not about pumping US up Alad….we're a captive audience - we're on board.

It's about attracting new audiences, both at the ground and on tv to our sport. This in turn will bring in more sponsorship and eventually more contract money for the games rights.

This campaign should do better than any have in the last 10 years. Is it perfect?...probably not. Will it work?....you bet your backside it will.

it just me or did the 'Simply the Best' campaign completely eclipse this one?

Tina Turner - What you see is what you get

sure i was about 8 years old at the time, but I know the 1990 one back to front.

I assume the NRL is competing with the AFL by choosing this song, and if I'm right, it's a terrible choice.

Bon Jovi fits right into the demographic of middle age men - a demographic the NRL already owns in Sydney who won't be looking at AFL at all.

Target Gen Y, pick a song that will match the game PLUS attract the youthful fans who, once they pick, will most likely stay loyal to the sport.

and Females, and Kids these days.
BJ last year were the biggest touring band and the most people to their concerts. Bigger then U2\. They have the the widest range in audience in terms of Age. If the NRL wanted a band that is going to attract pretty much every age there is incl the woman.. they have got it spot on!!! Great choice
