The thing that I find most upsetting about all of this is the way in which the Australian public are being duped by Mundine and Green. Danny used to be a fighter when he was chasing Marcus Beyer around the planet, but is no more and Mundine never was one.
Yet the two most recognisable names to the general public, in Australian boxing are these two clowns….what a joke! They are nothing more than three ringed circus masters.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world we have at least three guys who are taking on real fighters, for real belts in real championships.
Michael Katsidis, Vic Darchinyan and Sakio Bika are doing us proud and largely going unnoticed because all the medias attention is on these two who are forcing blokes to come out of retirement or are just taking on bums.
Everything about that fight last night was absolute crap....
#1 Briggs had been retired for 3 and half years,
#2 He was given 6 weeks to prepare,
#3 He took on no warm up bouts,
#4 Had very limited sparring sessions from what I've been told,
#5 Even though it was only an IBO belt, Danny put it on the line,
#6 Nsw Boxing didnt sanction the bout due to health concerns
#7 Fight gets moved to Perth amid media conferences and threats of litigation from Green,
#8 Several well respected trainers including Fenech suggest the fight shouldnt go ahead,
#9 Briggs shows up to the weigh-in more than three kilo's overweight and unshaven
#10 Bookmakers all over the country suspend betting at 6 o'clock on the fight as a huge surge of wagers have come in on a first round KO which earlier in the day was paying $10,
#11 They hit the ring and Green looks ready for war, Briggs looks like he couldnt give a crap - his managers are all hugging him and saying lord knows what.
#12 Fight finally starts , they circle each other, Green throws a jab which all but misses the target, Briggs takes a couple of paces, falls to his knees and refuses to get up.
#13 After Briggs and entourage leave the ring Green goes into a ranting speech, very reminiscent to some I saw the Rock do 10 years ago on the WWF..
#14 ...and so on it goes today.....
This is what big time boxing in this country has come to and Mundine and Green are the culprits.
Thank god we still have Bika, Katsidis and Darchinyan flying the flag and showing some integrity.
